Do I chip in?

Just returned from maternity to a new team. Someone is just leaving to go on maternity. I didn’t know them before I went off and no interaction since I’ve been back. Small team, do I still chip in for baby presents?

I would but only of you can afford it

MolkosTeenageAngst · 01/06/2023 22:15

There’s no right or wrong here. If you want to, chip in. If you don’t, don’t.

sunshineandshowers40 · 01/06/2023 22:17

How small is the team and how much are they wanting you to contribute? I probably wouldn't but if I had met them and they seemed nice I would contribute a small amount.

JMSA · 01/06/2023 22:17

I usually err on the generous side, but I think it's fine not to contribute. If the person is going to be working closely with you on their return, then I might chip in with a fiver. Otherwise not.

Ihatethenewlook · 01/06/2023 22:18

If you can afford it I’d stick in a fiver

drpet49 · 01/06/2023 22:18

I wouldn’t

CaloundraBlues · 01/06/2023 22:19

I wouldn't contribute for somebody I didn't know

spaceychimp80 · 01/06/2023 22:20

There is no way I would contribute for somebody I didn't know.

NowItsSpring · 01/06/2023 22:39

I wouldn't

1offnamechange · 01/06/2023 22:58

I wouldn't
In the old days I didn't mind just chucking in a quid or two in an envelope when nobody knew who had given what.
Now we all work remotely it's all by paypal so I feel cheeky putting in anything less than a fiver and there's no way I can afford that for every single leaving do/wedding/baby, so I give more but to fewer people, usually only those in my team or who I've worked directly with. Working on the assumption that others do similar it probably works out the same.

Postbox87 · 02/06/2023 01:38

I wouldn't, and I wouldn't feel bad at all.

Summer2424 · 02/06/2023 02:19

Hi @letstal i wouldn't tbh

Coolhand2 · 02/06/2023 02:22

I would out of generosity if I can afford it

CrazyArmadilloLady · 02/06/2023 02:24

Ross……?

lauraisa · 02/06/2023 02:30

£5

Ihaveamagicwand · 02/06/2023 02:30

Haven’t you seen the episode of Friends where Ross, having just moved into his new apartment, decides not to contribute to the leaving collection for the caretaker? Things don’t go well!

You’ve just gone back, it’s a new team, just remember you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.

Ihaveamagicwand · 02/06/2023 02:33

Ha! Crossed posts but a shared point of reference CrazyArmadilloLady!!
