I just saw an advert for the above to join a meet up?
Are lots of neurodivergent people queer then?
Just wondered and yes the advert said queer

Really? You think because you saw an ad for a specific group that lots of ND people are queer?

How utterly bizarre of you.

Timesawastin · 31/05/2023 21:55

Don't know about 'lots' but simply by the law of averages some must be.

AttilaThePun · 31/05/2023 21:57

IME a lot of neurodivergent people are lesbian, gay or bi, and because of that many identify as trans (add in an unhealthy dollop of society’s love of gender stereotypes here).

I hate “queer” with a passion, and I would avoid any meet-up like this.

Agree funny word to use.

It's not a funny word to use at all. Lots of people, ND and NT, identity as queer nowadays.

Then it's probably not aimed at you is it.

I'm not sure what the issue is OP, whether there's thousands of then or tens of them let them have a group if they want it. There will be a lot of "queer" / gay and lesbian people who are also neurodivergent and I presume enough of them find it useful to have a sympathetic peer group to talk to to make it worthwhile.

The use of the word ‘queer’ is actually repulsive to many many gay and lesbian people - probably due to it’s history of being a slur used to attack that group.
People who use it nowadays are just trying to be edgy. In reality, they’re being arseholes…

Jibo · 31/05/2023 22:10

I think this is quite a common self-identified combination in a particular type of younger person.

Augend23 · 31/05/2023 22:10

I mean I assume if that group was super frequent they probably wouldn't be advertising to locate more people in the same situation.

I think re queer, my understanding is that the word was reclaimed to essentially undo it being a slur - but generally I'd still be careful to only use it in reference to people who have used it themselves as it's quite a Marmite word and there are definitely gay/lesbian/bi folks who wouldn't think it's a suitable word to describe them.

True, but usually the types who also demand that lesbians should be open to sleeping with men.
There are plenty of us, lesbians who are also neurodivergent, who have felt rather threatened and isolated by not going down the gender route that so many “queers“ wholly embrace (to the detriment of women, whether they’re lesbian or not), for “queer” to have bad connotations.
Also many who identify as queer are actually straight, but they want to be more special
that boring straight.
