Is this too much lunch for a diet?

Trying to shift a couple of stone.
I eat v healthily, but probably too much, I don’t work out normally, but have started again.
I’m a person who has to cut back a lot and not eat much/work out daily to stay slim.
In the past when I was v slim, I went to the gym and had less carbs & smaller portions. I’m trying fasting also.
I’ve had no breakfast, just got in from school run, morning work and walking the dog.
Is this too much?
There’s two tins of tuna and two crackers, the rest is just salad? Assuming that’s okay?
Dinner is broccoli, cauliflower, carrots & chicken, piece of fruit afterwards.
I’m attempting to cut right back on carbs, my portions seem big though 😂but I’m hungry
Desperate to lose weight

Ok I am an absolutely stable 55kg at 5’5” and have been for years.
I would eat that salad for lunch no problem. Definitely with a blob of mayo. I’d probably add an half an avocado or a boiled egg and some nuts and seeds.
It is a relatively small and perfectly healthy plate of food. Anyone who sees something different has an issue with food.

You are missing the point @LapinR0se
Your weight is stable on what you eat to maintain your 'normal' weight. If you were overweight then you would have to eat less.

I can only lose weight on around 1000 cals a day (not that I need to lose weight but in the past when I lost about 3 kgs that was the only way to do it.)

I'm really interested in what work you do now @Pollis

Nutritionist or psychotherapist?

Because there are people who become overweight not because of emotional eating but because they eat too much of the wrong food (using that term loosely) often through ignorance about food values.

If therapy worked for everyone no one would need gastric bands.

I'm in private practice, but I do a lot of work around emotional eating in conjunction with advice on good and balanced - balanced being key - nutrition.

Anyone who comes to me eating McDonalds or tubs of Ben and Jerry's or 200g bars of chocolate 7 days a week knows full well that's not good nutrition, they don't need me to tell them that - they do it for the dopamine hit they get from eating, so that's what we deal with first.

And I also get people who are convinced they already eat healthily and don't understand why they aren't losing weight (often on low carb diets it has to be said), and nine times out of ten they are simply eating too many calories (and almost ALWAYS not nearly enough fibre).

Pollis · 31/05/2023 22:51

And there are plenty of people who "cheat" gastric bands and still manage to gain weight back. It happens much more frequently than I think people realise.

Mate don't ask on here, people seem to think a lettuce leaf with a pinch of tuna is gluttony.

Absolutely this. MN is like a pro-Ana gathering a lot of the time.

Cut it back to half a tin of tuna, not in oil, in springwater, lose the mayo, lose the cracker, no dressing on the salad. Add salt and pepper or lemon juice if you need some seasoning, and you would be good to go. As it is it is nowhere near adequate for weight loss. I would also suggest that if you think this quantity/ type of food is good for weightloss, be open to the fact that your approach most likely needs a huge overhaul , and you should sense check all your other meals too

I do hope you are joking.

It's 2 extremes imo. Plenty saying whatever is fine and being size 16 plus is fine as it's average- and those saying they eat fuck all and a size 8 is obese. No one in the middle where most people actually are. R

Realistically there's a tonne of mayo on here which is pointless if trying to lose weight and forgoing bread and stuff for a salad when could have 2 slices for less than the mayo!

Mayo is not "pointless" when trying to lose weight as long as the overall calories work out. When I post my weight I ate mayo, olive oil, cheese, chocolate, ice cream. Obviously not constantly but I ate all these things and I still lost weight because I was in an overall deficit.

That amount when sacrificing other stuff you actually enjoy having a large amount is! And yes I know, I didn't say that wasn't the case.

You’d definitely lose weight…because you’d throw the damn thing in the bin for being utterly joyless and pretty tasteless.

Replace the mayo with Philadelphia lightest.
One small tin of tuna or half a large tin, but in spring water not oil.
There’s probably more calories in that huge dollop of mayo than there is in the rest of the dish. Which is fine, unless you’re wanting to lose weight.

Yeah, I guess if you find people giving simple suggestions for decent lunches for weight loss hilarious.

Well, if you lost weight eating normal full fat ice cream because of calorie deficit then you must have sacrificed something more nutritious for those 250+ calories.

If what you mean is that the occasional ice cream cheered you up and made it more likely you kept to the rest of your diet then say so.

Agree it’s batshit. The hate of mayo and hysteria over too much tuna is something for classics.

Mayo is lovely. Lots of full fat mayo has lots of calories.

What's batshit is people apparently pissing themselves over their breakfast when anyone suggests that mayo is calorific.

Hatehooveringsomuch · 31/05/2023 13:01

Also, what could I add to salads to make them more interesting? going to be having a lot of them!

Can’t have tuna everyday (although I love it)

I would do half a tin of tuna and add some cheese or avocado. An egg would be lovely and creamy. That way you get some variation. Consider something more crunchy as well so you feel like you've eaten as the salad looks quite soft apart from the crackers and cucumber.

Asparagus is great at this time of year. I add broccoli to salads (which is boring AF but it makes my body work to break it down). Celery or nuts. Red pepper.

Not necessarily, on days I had things like that I simply had lower carb other meals, but still with many nutrients. Beans and legumes instead of pasta for instance.

If you're on a diet and say to yourself that means you can never eat X, Y, Z, you're setting yourself up for failure.

HairyKitty · 01/06/2023 08:44

It’s completely fine and a good balanced lunch if around 400 calories I would guess. If you can manage not to snack you will be well on your way with your diet.

So low carb isn't calorie deficit.

Yes it was, because the calories in the meals I was consuming were lower. A big salad with beans has fewer calories than a bowl of pasta.

Not sure what is so hard to understand really.

I think you are convinced that everyone who diets has emotional issues around food. I don't think that's true. I don't at all. I like food, there are foods I love. But I couldn't care less if I never had an ice cream again.

Well that's fine then, you don't like ice cream. I don't like kebabs or McDonald's, so I don't eat them. I do like ice cream, and white bread, and white pasta, and butter, and olive oil, so I still eat all those things. If you don't like any of things then don't eat them!
