Man lying on grass outside

ChekhovsMum · 30/05/2023 15:57

So there’s a man lying flat on his back on the grass opposite from my house.
I saw him as I drove home, walking with the aid of two crutches (not elderly - I would put his age at mid-40s), then just as I pulled into my driveway he appeared to collapse to the ground, although if I had to guess, it looked like a deliberate decision, not a giving-out of his limbs, IYSWIM.
I parked, went up to him and asked if he was okay - did he want me to call anyone, get him some water etc? He said he was fine and didn’t need anything, with an attitude that suggested it was weird of me to ask.
20 minutes later, he’s still there. I can see him from the window. My guess is that he’s drunk, although he didn’t come across that way when he spoke.
I don’t really want to go back out because I’m home alone, and although it’s a residential street most people work very conventional hours around here, so there is a chance of not being seen/heard if I felt unsafe.
I can imagine this happening when I lived in London, but this is a very family-oriented residential area in a leafy town and it just seems so bizarre.

Yep, because in London we all just lie around all over the place - on the grass, on the pavements. Went to the park yesterday and there were tonnes of people lying down on the grass. Shocker!

I hope you called the police!

CockSpadget · 30/05/2023 17:43

He was stoned/high. Prob just scored.

I hope you called the police!

But of course. There probably weren't enough police to arrest all of them, though.

I did the garden for a while, glancing over to check that he hadn’t vomited. In that time a good few other uptight pearl-clutchers walked or drove past, and preciously checked on him/asked him/other passers-by if he was alright.
I went indoors for a drink and a wee and now he’s gone. I’m slightly gutted that I can’t report how! But presumably he did eventually get up by himself. He was there a good hour or more.

He probably got fed up of everyone waking him up from his late afternoon nap and moved on.

I wouldn’t be happy with a stranger lying on the ground near my home, especially if he was drunk in broad daylight. It’s not respectable behaviour. The type of person who randomly lies on the ground is not the type of person you want hanging around where you live. Maybe some of you live in areas where this sort of behaviour is normal? I would want him moved on asap.

"Richard! Richaaaaaard! Do something, dear!

You think he sustained his injuries in a football match?

Am I the only one that finds the mental image of OP doing her front garden while a man with crutches lies of the grass verge refusing any help hilarious?

I doubt many of the PPs in here would think it hilarious as they seem to think it's perfectly normal, it obviously happens all the time wherever they live 🙄

InsomniacVampire · 30/05/2023 18:01

Looking if there are any men (fully clothed but Id take non fully clothed depending on the levels of hotness) lying on the grass outside.
Sadly no.

There was plenty of drunks on yachts in Swansea Marina over the weekend….. shocking behaviour

There is usually plenty of drunks in Downing St. too .

You're a scarlet hussy-type harlot-woman and I'm calling in the army 🥸.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 30/05/2023 18:04

Can you really not see the difference in the situations?

You'd really hope they could as it's a massively different situation to someone on crutches stopping to have a rest.

dudsville · 30/05/2023 18:04

This is an odd thing for a pile on. Where i live this would constitute bizarre behaviour and definitely raise concern. Thankfully all my neighbours know each other so there would be a few of us available to work out why someone meandered into to an area not typically used for sleeping to do just that. Hope you get some resultion op.

Guilty as charged your honour

Beezknees · 30/05/2023 18:07

This made me smile 😆 I live in a town with a lot of alcoholics, there's a woman who frequently lies down in the middle of the high street for a rest with her bottle of wine, she's a dab hand at not spilling it to be fair. You just leave them be.

... mind you, you'd probably enjoy the army, so perhaps I'd better call in the Salvation Army?

DisquietintheRanks · 30/05/2023 18:08

The OP did fine checking on the guy - that's the kind and humane thing to do. She also did fine leaving him alone after checking given that he was doing nothing illegal, posed no threat and because there was a perfectly rational explanation for his actions.

Some of the nimbys on here need to get hold of themselves. Public property is just that.

Resolution to someone else lying on the grass?

Crunchymum · 30/05/2023 17:11

I wonder how many of the posters who are so quick to be snarky with the OP have actually had anything like this happen to them?

It's all good in theory to leave some random man on the grass verge, until it's the grass verge near your house. Then I bet you wouldn't be some comfortable with it

(I am a Londoner who has had to shoo people off the bench in our locked front garden more than once a month!)

It's oddly specific, but I don't live in the nicest area and you learn to mind your own business with things like this. Last year somebody high on drugs wandered down my street and smashed somebody's car up hallucinating there was someone inside. Woke me up but I ignored it. Keep your head down and don't get involved.

No no, the actual army is absolutely fine! Or maybe, don't know, firefighters?

Linkstolondon · 30/05/2023 18:15

Speermint · 30/05/2023 15:59

I’d call 111 and report it to local police. They will come by and sort it out.

This is why cops can’t get to real jobs because they’re busy attending non incidents. OP don’t ring the Police and waste their time.

CarCrazy · 30/05/2023 18:15

Well, I do agree with the majority on here! That it's not really a crime to lie down :) but I do think the pile on has a been a bit mean! I'd step away from the thread OP and let it disappear down the list, for your own wellbeing :)

LuvSmallDogs · 30/05/2023 18:17

@Beezknees , in my old town the alchies would congregate on a few benches in the town square and spend the day boozing.

One of them loudly swore near my young son and a second one massively told him off for swearing near kids.

Another time, I sat on a bench outside their usual "range" with a coffee around 8am to kill time before work, and one of them joined me with his 4pack of Special Brew and we just sat and drank and watched the pigeons.

Lots of local FB pearlclutching over what the tourists would think, but they didn't really get up to anything horrible (other than what they were doing to themselves, of course).

ForTheSakeOfThePenguin · 30/05/2023 18:20

It is a cultural thing OP, stiff upper lip and all that. These are the times when people have told me they are “fine” but weren’t:

  1. Nice old man man trips in the middle of the city centre and hits his head, he is bleeding from the wound and is unable to stand up. His response “I’m fine”
20 minutes later the ambulance arrives and he is in shock, but still fine enough to say “I’m fine!”.
Another old man pass by when he is being lifted to the ambulance and recognises him, he says “Good grief Kevin! What happened to your head?!?” You guessed it, Kevin says he is “fine”.

  2. Diabetic woman faints with low sugar in park, woman runs to her and identify herself as a nurse, assess the situation, asks her if she is ok, and of course she is “fine”, she is sent to hospital in an ambulance after 10 minutes as still looking unwell… but she is “fine”

  3. Man about to jump from a bridge. I say hey are you ok??? Yes of course he says “I’m fine” leave me alone and all that but he is “fine”. Jesus! Even I had to had counseling after that. Of course he wasn’t “fine”

  4. And finally, cyclist is hit by a car flies over the pavement merely missing my car. The bike is totally thrashed and she is hurt but refuses any help, she stands up, says she is fine and she is getting back on the bike. (yeah.. right)

I just make my own assessment, if they look a mess and helpless it is a good idea to call 111 just in case.

lljkk · 30/05/2023 18:21

It's kind that you're worried that he needs help, OP.
Yes I'd be amused (and might double check my locks).
He's not doing anything wrong.
Peculiar yes, but it's still legal to flop on a verge.

Too cold here to flop on the grass. brrrr.... 🔥🔥🔥🔥 on in my house.
