Man lying on grass outside

ChekhovsMum · 30/05/2023 15:57

So there’s a man lying flat on his back on the grass opposite from my house.
I saw him as I drove home, walking with the aid of two crutches (not elderly - I would put his age at mid-40s), then just as I pulled into my driveway he appeared to collapse to the ground, although if I had to guess, it looked like a deliberate decision, not a giving-out of his limbs, IYSWIM.
I parked, went up to him and asked if he was okay - did he want me to call anyone, get him some water etc? He said he was fine and didn’t need anything, with an attitude that suggested it was weird of me to ask.
20 minutes later, he’s still there. I can see him from the window. My guess is that he’s drunk, although he didn’t come across that way when he spoke.
I don’t really want to go back out because I’m home alone, and although it’s a residential street most people work very conventional hours around here, so there is a chance of not being seen/heard if I felt unsafe.
I can imagine this happening when I lived in London, but this is a very family-oriented residential area in a leafy town and it just seems so bizarre.

I used to work in quite an upmarket restaurant with a slebrity chef and all that. One day, someone came in and said "I'm sure it has nothing to do with you, but I thought you should know there is a man, lying down on the grass opposite your restaurant". I was a bit Hmm and? But obviously did the whole "oh dear, thank you for letting us know" type thing. Long story short it was the bar man 😂. Think he was just really tired (and maybe a bit hungover) and had just wandered out in the middle of his shift and had a little lie down and fell asleep!

Sorry, not helpful but this thread reminded me of this

You should have called an ambulance 🤦🏻‍♀️

We called both but managed to sort him out ourselves in the end (DH is a nurse so we’re not daft), police was as much for managing the wider situation as there were kids videoing him.

Thelastofbus · 30/05/2023 16:53

I don’t think you are being Peak mumsnet OP. I think all the arsey replies are typical
mumsnet though!

I’d be completely weirded out by a random
man just lying on the ground outside my
house, even i. Luckily for me I live in nosey neighbour land, and within 20 minutes there would
have been 20 messages on the neighbourhood WhatsApp, and someone would have volunteered to deal with him!

I wouldn’t be happy with a stranger lying on the ground near my home, especially if he was drunk in broad daylight. It’s not respectable behaviour. The type of person who randomly lies on the ground is not the type of person you want hanging around where you live. Maybe some of you live in areas where this sort of behaviour is normal? I would want him moved on asap.

Classic mumsnet

DisquietintheRanks · 30/05/2023 16:54

@Fandabedodgy the OP is guessing he's drunk as a way of explaining his behaviour even though there is no smell of drink and he's not slurring his words. So yes he could be drunk but then equally he might be knackered from using the crutches and need a rest. Or both, or neither.

I’d call 111 and report it to local police. They will come by and sort it out.

Police? For what exactly. Existing?

I think you need to adjust your expectations as to what is a police matter. the police won’t attend medical matters in a public space to stop kids recording. Horrible as it is, it happens all the time and isn’t a police matter.

oakleaffy · 30/05/2023 16:55

I have found a few absolutely passed out drunks before-
One outside my house on Christmas Day in the pouring rain.

I truly thought he was dead.
” Dead drunk”

he shuffled off leaving either a pool of blood or red vomit behind.

Once called an ambulance for a rat arsed older woman - it was early morning and she had fallen off a wall and smacked her head.
They took her away .
That was years ago before ambulance / hospital crisis

Did you read my previous post?

Yes he could be resting, or he could be drunk, or he could be ill.

Based on her description of his presentation - help should be sought.

Persistent maleness in a built up area. Or possibly he has a swarthy complexion and "no job to go to".

HelpMeGetThrough · 30/05/2023 16:58

You've spoken to him once and he didn't need anything.

Leave the silly bugger there.

Ferferksake · 30/05/2023 16:58

I nearly pulled the car over to give first aid to a scarecrow the other week that somebody had draped over the school railings.

You did the decent thing and checked he was okay. He said he is, so just crack on with your day.

toomuchlaundry · 30/05/2023 16:58

I assume if he was lying in the pavement posters would be telling the OP to do something about it. I would see a grass verge as similar (although slightly more comfortable than a pavement) in a residential area, as it is not somewhere people would normally choose to lie down

Clearly.

Made me laugh there, 😂

I don’t know why folks would report it to the police. What would they say, officer there is a man with a disability that causes him to use crutches, he’s laying on the grass in a public space. I spoke to him and he says he’s fine, I think he’s just resting, can you come and sort it out?

😂 Brilliant!
Thanks for the laugh!

MayBeeJuneSoon · 30/05/2023 16:59

Has he gone yet?

DisquietintheRanks · 30/05/2023 16:59

@Fandabedodgy his presentation is lucid, resting on the ground and saying he doesn't need help. Is it the crutches that make you think he can't be trusted with his on welfare or what?

TripleDaisySummer · 30/05/2023 17:00

If you've checked on him and he seems lucid and fine - I'd assume he's bloody exhausted from the crutches and is having a break before carrying on.

Clearly if he seems worse later - unconscious or struggling to move that would be time to phone/do something.

Hyacinth, is that you?

pinkyredrose · 30/05/2023 16:59

Lol

You clearly don’t live in a wealthy area!😂
Plenty of drunks in respectable areas-

MayBeeJuneSoon · 30/05/2023 17:04

Sounds like the drunks are infiltrating the Leafy Suburbs...

porridgeisbae · 30/05/2023 17:06

Most people don't lie on the ground for no reason. People can still think/say they're ok and not be. It's obvious something's not right.

You've done your bit by going over to him @ChekhovsMum . I suggest calling an ambulance now if he's still there.

allthewoes · 30/05/2023 17:08

If he's on crutches presumably he's trying to build his strength up by going for a walk and is just having a rest 🤷🏼‍♀️

GuinnessBird · 30/05/2023 17:09

He's not physically disabled and knackered?
