Sick of some Cornish people bleating on as though they are the worlds only tourist destination

Just read the article below and found a few gems such as these:

’ have you ever wondered where the local people live? Or have you noticed that many of your holiday neighbours are recognisable in the narrow lanes of the pretty fishing villages because they are the same people you live near in London?’

and…

‘Despite what you may have read, we Cornish do welcome visitors and are happy to share our love of our land with you. But it might help if you do a bit of research – Cornwall is fiercely independent and has a proud and unique history and heritage…* *And try not to be rude to local people. If you’ve been asked to not drink from a glass bottle on the beach, there is a reason for that. Don’t forget to tip waiting staff. ‘

What patronising bollocks. So Londoner’s (as those are apparently the only people who visit Cornwall) are so untraveled and boorish we need to be told not to be rude to people, pay tips, not to smash glass bottles in sand, that we’ve bought all of their houses, that it’s ‘their’ land and we’re the ones who are rude?

I’d already decided I wouldn’t go back there after how some of them carried on during Covid but this article has pissed me off. Why would anyone go there when they can go to equally lovely places in the UK/World and not be treated with contempt?

I went on holiday to Cornwall last year and I didn’t encounter any rudeness from locals.

I do sympathise with them though because my local town has become very popular with people from London and other areas and they are moving here in droves. I shouldn’t complain because my house has gone up in value by at least 40% over the last 7 or so years, but it’s made the town unaffordable to live in for local first time buyers and rental prices have become eye wateringly expensive.

I recently saw a 2 bed terrace for rent being advertised at £1300 pcm. That is London prices. It has also pushed up the price of fuel (I know because it’s markedly cheaper in less trendy neighbouring towns) and even the charity shops. It has become a town of 2 halves with ever increasing gentrification. The people are perfectly lovely but it’s put pressure on local housing and schools.

Maireas · 29/05/2023 20:41

What's that saying? Be careful what you wish for...

Perhaps they are Londoners who are priced out of London...

Teddypops · 29/05/2023 20:41

I wouldn't holiday here if I didn't live here. I grew up here and after a number of years in London I returned.

Luckily I can afford to live in a good area and know all the secret beaches and best areas.

But I holiday abroad. I avoid the busy places though.

Cornwall today. Shit and drab. Can't see why anyone would bother Wink

I'm a Londoner, am going to Cornwall this summer and can't wait! Then again, as I'm not an obnoxious cunt I can't imagine I'll have anything but a great time.

It isn't people like you who some Cornish people might object to! Enjoy yourself.

transformandriseup · 29/05/2023 20:45

I certainly won't be spending my hard earned money on a holiday where the locals and local businesses look down their nose at me and resent my presence.

Well don't then but there are people and businesses who will resent tourists all over the world. Those people will make assumptions about all tourists based on how they have seen other tourists behave the same as some people make assumptions about the Cornish based on how some Cornish behave.

Mirabai · 29/05/2023 20:45

Cornwall seems to think it’s the only place in the country where the locals are priced out of the area they grew up in. If they think Cornwall is bad they should try London…

Nice, that's close to where I live.

I think a lot of the antagonism probably comes from the fact that some Londoners have bought second homes in Cornwall. House prices have gone through the roof and locals can't afford to buy them as a result. I don't blame them.

As for fewer people going there, I doubt that they would mind.

@Paperlate . people from Cornwall do go on holiday and we often spend money overseas. Because we live in a beautiful part of the world, we are really picky about where we go. If you live in a place that is close to Paradise, why would you go to an ugly place?

Justloggedontocommentoncornwall · 29/05/2023 20:49

I don't really. I either visit Margate (where im from), or Lincolnshire to visit family. I tend to holiday in Cornwall as I have only lived here 5 years so still lots to see!
As someone from the SE who moved to Cornwall, I have found it to be so friendly. I love it here.
We are very much reliant on tourism, and most are so lovely, but a few really make life hard. I live near lands end and have seen people pooing in laybys, having parties on the beach and leave all their litter, and dumping all their unwanted body boards etc in our bins at work, this is since Easter. I agree these probably aren't Guardian readers, but you would be surprised how much people lower their standards on holiday! I have been back to London a few times and I'm sure I have done things to annoy people. I haven't cropped in a bad and left it on the roadside though.

As above...Cambridge!

Paq · 29/05/2023 20:52

It's not compulsory to love Cornwall but if it's not your cup of tea then just, don't come?

The "people of Cornwall" don't control what the Guardian writes. And funnily enough, there is a variety of views amongst the 600k people who live here.

Some of us also think the FF movie was naff (although why a bad movie should put you off visiting a place I don't know). Try Bait instead, it won a BAFTA.

Some parts of Cornwall are hardly paradise. So you are happy to be a tourist in other peoples paradise? You just don't want people to come to yours?

Today I had to reverse seven, yes seven times in a stretch of narrow road because “visitors” just stop, grin inanely, and seem unable to find their reverse gear. It’s as if it’s all part of a holiday adventure for them. It is tedious, boring and infuriating and makes it hard not to get irritated when you are goi g about your daily business. I’ve lived in Cornwall for 50 years and the attitude and behaviour of visitors is getting worse. I seldom drive anywhere on changeover day if I can avoid it

SAME!!!

I went to Cambridge once for the strawberry fair…probably why it gets so touristy there.

smooththecat · 29/05/2023 20:53

There is a separatist movement and the place can be quite insular. I suppose they tolerate visitors as it's a main income stream, but yes, it's not a good feeling. I can understand re. the house prices, but that is a result of what's happening on a country-wide basis.

The situation in Venice is worse, the locals are utterly pissed off with tourism (can't blame them to be honest), and when you get to a restaurant they start putting away chairs. I have to go there for work, otherwise I wouldn't. I guess there are just too many people in some places and they are a bit ruined.

FrostyFifi · 29/05/2023 20:53

I finally got around to visiting Cornwall last October. I don't know if it was because it was out of season but we found people to be very friendly, and very chatty.
Lovely laid-back vibe but I'm guessing it all gets a bit fraught over school summer holidays.

ChiChaNaYubi · 29/05/2023 20:54

I finally left Cornwall a few years ago and wouldn’t move back for all the money in the world. Don’t mind visiting it but no. So backwards and dull.

They bought the houses from locals, though. Mind you, it's easy to be tempted by £££

Endlesssummer2022 · 29/05/2023 19:32

Because it’s patronising and rude. There is no need to explain to grown adults who weren’t dragged up not to be rude to people, to pay tips in restaurants or that glass breaks and gets stuck in sand. Or that an area has a unique history and culture - everywhere does. It’s as if she thinks all tourists are thick boors.

You'd think not, but I live in another tourist hot spot with a beach, and the state visitors leave the beaches in is vile. Quite apart from the standard food waste, coke cans and glass bottles, they seem to think it's too much hassle to find a baby change, and then leave the dirty nappies were they were sat! It's beyond disgusting. Sadly while people like yourself may be reasonable and clean up after yourself, you're very much in the minority.

Sigmama · 29/05/2023 20:58

Sausage, well if change over day us do busy, why would you want to drive, plan your life around it, why not
