Sick of some Cornish people bleating on as though they are the worlds only tourist destination

Just read the article below and found a few gems such as these:

’ have you ever wondered where the local people live? Or have you noticed that many of your holiday neighbours are recognisable in the narrow lanes of the pretty fishing villages because they are the same people you live near in London?’

and…

‘Despite what you may have read, we Cornish do welcome visitors and are happy to share our love of our land with you. But it might help if you do a bit of research – Cornwall is fiercely independent and has a proud and unique history and heritage…* *And try not to be rude to local people. If you’ve been asked to not drink from a glass bottle on the beach, there is a reason for that. Don’t forget to tip waiting staff. ‘

What patronising bollocks. So Londoner’s (as those are apparently the only people who visit Cornwall) are so untraveled and boorish we need to be told not to be rude to people, pay tips, not to smash glass bottles in sand, that we’ve bought all of their houses, that it’s ‘their’ land and we’re the ones who are rude?

I’d already decided I wouldn’t go back there after how some of them carried on during Covid but this article has pissed me off. Why would anyone go there when they can go to equally lovely places in the UK/World and not be treated with contempt?

Cornish people do seem odd… haven’t been back there in about 30 years as the last time we went they seemed so inhospitable to tourists. Plenty of other places to spend our tourist 💵

MrsKeats · 29/05/2023 20:24

It's too Brexity for me.
Happy to take in the tourist pound but horrible to tourists. If they all left what would happen to their economy?

Maireas · 29/05/2023 20:25

What! @RafaistheKingofClay they're bad drivers and partially nude?!?!

Tr1skel1on · 29/05/2023 20:25

Makes me realise how lucky we are to have the TT. Our island population increases by 50 per cent this time of year. I have never had to deal with the kind of stuff previous posters have mentioned, I'm not a biker but our TT fans are great, a real asset to our island and wouldn't dream of causing the havok that is happening in Cornwall

Maireas · 29/05/2023 20:27

too Brexity 😂

MrsKeats · 29/05/2023 20:28

Well I'm very remainy Grin

sewerrat · 29/05/2023 20:28

cornwall is a shit hole lol no one is fighting them for it

Allblackeverythingalways · 29/05/2023 20:29

I'm only going to visit Cornwall (probably) once more in my lifetime, and that's purely because my partner has never been.
For a week in Cornwall you'll pay more than you would if you went to a lovely town in Portugal. And the food is shit.

DorritLittle · 29/05/2023 19:21

Hmm. I am currently in Cornwall (first visit in years) and have been surprised by how lovely the locals have been. Maybe it’s because I am not a Londoner 😉

And maybe you are not rude.

I think no the problem is the type of people that will do the thing cited in this thread would, quite frankly, do them anywhere.

We live in an age where certain folk just give zero fucks. There are simply no consequences for anti social behaviour. Anyone that dares challenge gets a hurl of abuse, which is the default of the obnoxious.

To Cornwall, you aren't alone. It's a national epidemic.

BastetsWhiskers · 29/05/2023 20:30

Perhaps they're just more vocal about it than other destinations.

It's a poor county (aside from some property) so second homes do hurt wages if they're left empty at times of the year. The icing on the cake would be arrogant, littering tourists.

transformandriseup · 29/05/2023 20:31

However, I love where I live but it becomes utterly vile during Summer. The roads, the beaches the shops etc. Thats why some of us may get grumpy

I think this is the problem, I couldn't care less about anyone who chooses to visit Cornwall but oh my god the roads this time of year, it's like everyone has just completely forgotten how to drive.

Oh yeah we do moan about tourists and 2nd home owners on this side of the border too. And the Spanish do, and I reckon just about anywhere that gets inundated with tourists over the summer.

This is very true, we go to Spain regularly and spend a lot of money there but some locals do moan and they have every right to their opinion the same as the OP.

Soubriquet · 29/05/2023 20:31

I went to Cornwall for a week about 15 years ago. Me and my Nan went and took our dogs. I loved it down there. Would love to move down there.

I can see why some residents get frustrated with constant tourism but at the end of the day, you live in a tourist area, you need to expect tourists.

CosmosQueen · 29/05/2023 20:32

Tansytea · 29/05/2023 20:07

oh dammit, I'm a poor person and I didn't even realise. That's hilarious.

Me too! Actually I much prefer Wales so that suits me fine 😃

Stravaig · 29/05/2023 20:32

Another Highlander here, who stands wholesale with the Cornish on the harm done to our communities by some visitors and all second homes.

BunnyBegChetwynde · 29/05/2023 20:32

When the Cornish moan about tourists and second homers I thought they meant specifically David Cameron and Michael Gove and his ex wife.

Not Cornwall, but here's the rubbish I picked up from the lane approaching our local beach this morning. I do it every day in the summer when I walk my dog.

Often there are dirty nappies and broken glass. Quite regularly people actually hang their backside over the sea wall and shit, use tissues to wipe their arse and drop them where they fall. They empty their camper toilets in the loo bowls of the local public toilets, spilling human waste everywhere and blocking the toilets. On my birthday last year the middle aged tourists at the next table got so roaring drunk one of the women was sick at the table.

Yeah I'm a tourist elsewhere, but I've never done any of those things as I'm sure many pp have never behaved like this anywhere, but you can see how this would get to you if you lived somewhere as touristy as Cornwall.

MadamWhiteleigh · 29/05/2023 20:32

Surely the pooing in bags business was a covid-specific problem?

I do think those complaining about second homes and air bnbs need to ask themselves who owns these properties in the first place.

Lovemylaminator · 29/05/2023 20:33

I certainly won't be spending my hard earned money on a holiday where the locals and local businesses look down their nose at me and resent my presence.

I don't care how beautiful the place is, the local people and businesses are Tory voting, Brexit voting arrogant gits who don't realise the second home owner issue is one of their own making.

So, be careful proud Corish folk, you might just get your 'no tourist' wish, and you can wave goodbye to the income and employment as well.

Vitriolinsanity · 29/05/2023 20:33

I'm a Londoner, am going to Cornwall this summer and can't wait! Then again, as I'm not an obnoxious cunt I can't imagine I'll have anything but a great time.

Gardenerboo · 29/05/2023 20:33

@NeverDropYourMooncup amen to that.

It's the remote beaches. I understand if you get caught short but take it home! 😅

Exactly this

kerryno · 29/05/2023 20:38

I hate the way everyone is labelled a Londoner. The obnoxious ones that but the holiday homes are likely from the home counties & just lived in London for a few yrs!

thecookiecrumbles · 29/05/2023 20:39

I honestly think that Cornwall is the most overrated part of the UK.

Perhaps I've not been to the right places but I've been to Padstow, Rock (hated both of those), St Ives (boring), Falmouth (ok, I guess) St Austell (forgettable) and actually enjoyed Newquay the most but apparently that's the tacky part (but we stayed in the posh hotel overlooking Fistral beach which was lovely).

Much prefer North Devon, myself.

I'd love to know what I'm missing about Cornwall and where I should go to enjoy the experience.
