Sick of some Cornish people bleating on as though they are the worlds only tourist destination

Just read the article below and found a few gems such as these:

’ have you ever wondered where the local people live? Or have you noticed that many of your holiday neighbours are recognisable in the narrow lanes of the pretty fishing villages because they are the same people you live near in London?’

and…

‘Despite what you may have read, we Cornish do welcome visitors and are happy to share our love of our land with you. But it might help if you do a bit of research – Cornwall is fiercely independent and has a proud and unique history and heritage…* *And try not to be rude to local people. If you’ve been asked to not drink from a glass bottle on the beach, there is a reason for that. Don’t forget to tip waiting staff. ‘

What patronising bollocks. So Londoner’s (as those are apparently the only people who visit Cornwall) are so untraveled and boorish we need to be told not to be rude to people, pay tips, not to smash glass bottles in sand, that we’ve bought all of their houses, that it’s ‘their’ land and we’re the ones who are rude?

I’d already decided I wouldn’t go back there after how some of them carried on during Covid but this article has pissed me off. Why would anyone go there when they can go to equally lovely places in the UK/World and not be treated with contempt?

On the contrary, I am white and I make a particular point of engaging non-white families cycling or walking in my local area if they look a bit lost. They have made the effort to come here, and should feel welcome. And the path maps are not brilliant. I also try to explain the landscape, how it was shaped by the mining, and where they can see what life was like 100 years ago. We sometimes forget how fast the world has changed, and that less than 150 years ago, families paid a penny a day for basic schooling, to be taught to read and write, and that the cleverest neatfingered girls who got maths would become seamstresses, which was a highly skilled occupation.

Whilst you are probably well meaning
Saying that you make a particular effort to explain all about Cornwall to non whites sounds patronising.

emily01bristol · 31/05/2023 23:11

which bit?! I would have thought lockdown and travel bans were widely enough reported. The bit about addresses provided on admission, from about 6 years of working in a hospital.

If you mean the figure from my original post the problem itself was widely reported in the press at the same periods when the R rate in Cornwall soared to the highest in the U.K., way above that in London. The figure was quoted at the time by a friend who works in Treliske.

I’ll bow out now, my comment merely pointed out the both locals and tourists can behave badly. I had no idea that would provoke a reaction from anyone but probably a bit naive on my part 😂 I’ll leave you all to it!

I never said it was. I've only visited Cornwall once. Sheesh take more water with it 🙄

"Homeland"

Your homeland is England or Great Britain or the United Kingdom.

Cornwall is not a country.

Shhh...don't tell them that. I know Cornish people who proudly boast that they've never been to England
Meanwhile, my London borough is so cold and arrogant that we famously, as a crowd, lifted a bus off of someone who had been run over.

It was lockdown, travel was banned and their home addresses are provided when they are admitted. It’s not rocket science.

Great, we now know the how - but where has the info been published?

You may have missed it but she later said it was her friend in Treliske who’d told her that 70% of Cornwall’s intensive care beds had been occupied by ‘outsiders’ who’d brought Covid with them. Proper solid source there.

Today I had to reverse seven, yes seven times in a stretch of narrow road because “visitors” just stop, grin inanely, and seem unable to find their reverse gear. It’s as if it’s all part of a holiday adventure for them. It is tedious, boring and infuriating and makes it hard not to get irritated when you are goi g about your daily business. I’ve lived in Cornwall for 50 years and the attitude and behaviour of visitors is getting worse. I seldom drive anywhere on changeover day if I can avoid it

Well they pay road tax too.
Sorry you had to reverse 7 times.

This kind of rumour spreading about ‘others’ causes so much harm. It’s the same with neighbourhood WhatsApp groups where people start rumours about suspicious vans seen driving around full of ‘Eastern European looking’ men. It’s dangerous and corrosive.

if I lived in a place where going about one's daily business in a car became very difficult at certain times of the year, I think I might try and adapt my life at those times, failing that- leave the house earlier to make time for all the car reversing

Exactly and people should apply more critical thinking. Does this sound likely? What is the source of this information? How did it get out and why?

But they don’t do that when the information in question fits with whether natural bias or prejudice they have. They lap it up and pass it on.

There were probably only ever two people who shat on the beach and left it there but 50,000 people in Cornwall have ‘heard’ about it and so it seems like it’s happening every day all over the place.

NRTFT so I’m not sure what poster you are referring to but it’s a known fact that Treliske struggles to cope with the holiday makers and locals notice a massive difference in emergency services and care at Treliske when it is term time vs non term time.

Of course that isn’t the holiday makers fault but it is one of the worst things about living in a tourist destination and we do not have the financial support or extra services that some other places have.

After lockdown restrictions eased and no one could go abroad there was a massive surge of people coming to places like Cornwall and it put a huge strain on Treliske.
I know someone who died in the ambulance parked outside the hospital for 5 hours because there was no space to get into the hospital and that meant for 5 hours multiple other people would have had no ambulance.

There are multiple sources online about the impact holiday makers have on out already struggling services and the impact of holiday makers during covid.

At the end of the day if you don’t like the locals of a particular area, then don’t go.

If I thought the locals of Liverpool were rude and Liverpool wasn’t as great as everyone said it was then I simply wouldn’t go.

Why start a thread moaning about it.
Just don’t go.

Bloke in the pub told me he used to blame Eastern Europeans for making the city dirty until he went to Eastern Europe on holidays and realised they had a beautiful, clean country and then he had to reconsider his prejudice. I was a bit stunned by his casual racism. The stuff people believe never ceases to amaze me.

And if you don't like where you live, move?

How else do you think CV was spread?

In our village (in Cornwall) we had no CV during LD until a few 2nd home owners turned up, those that got it, were the ones that ignored the LD restrictions, secret back garden gatherings were common place.

I don't know about ICU beds, they appear to have been occupied mainly by the elderly and frail, so unlikely to be driving down from wherever.

Treliske only has about 15 ICU beds, they increased that during CV with portacabin style wards but its back to normal now, the AE dept is often 200% full.

FWIW from conversations i hear, most people who live here hate tourists, even though they themselves have only recently moved here, most of the people i grew up with moved away a long time ago, work mainly.

TeaParty4Me · 01/06/2023 09:47

I said this on one of the first couple pages.

The people who moan about the tourists the most, are the ones who have recently moved down.

Most people who are born and raised here are used to the tourists so don’t know any different.

Contrast with another active thread this morning where a wheelchair user was unable to board three consecutive London buses. No one came to help her, in fact able-bodied passengers gave her grief.

There's no such thing as road tax. Road funding comes from Council Tax, paid for by local people.

No, it comes from general taxation. Most local spending is funded by central government allocation to local authorities.

Whatever, its a bit much moaning about reversing, she doesn't own the road
