Am I being silly to worry about this?

So, last Wednesday at work I had a call to my mobile. Didn't know the number, answered anyway, said he was from 02. He was looking to give me a better deal on my account. I hung up and he called back. He said again he wanted to offer me a better deal on my monthly account. I laughed and said but I'm payg. He said that's OK, can't offer any reduction there and hung up. I have since googled the number and yes it is a scam. Today I was putting a top up in from my debit card, normal card, everything the same, but it wouldn't accept the details. I hung up and tried again, this time it worked, but in the background of the call I could here like another phone tone, just the once while I was inputting the details. I've checked my account and all is fine. But I find the whole thing strange. Just to say my phone is really old, like 20 years old possibly and has been giving a few minor niggles.

Would you worry and cancel the card just in case or am I panicking over nothing.

I would think it is fine if the number you phoned is the official service provider number.

You don't need a new phone if you don't want one.

No. The scam was trying to get bank details from you. You didn't give them any, so you've nothing to worry about. Your payment not going through the first time is unconnected. Background noise is just your paranoia coming through.
