10 week old ingested polymer from breast pad

I'm having a bit of a panic. I am breastfeeding my 10 week old baby and I didn't notice the nursing pad in my bra had torn.. there was gunk all over the underside of my boob. My baby was feeding and then started crying. I noticed the gunk on her face and initially thought it was snot and wiped it away. I then noticed some on my boob and realised the breast pad had torn.

I think she has ingested some of it. She seems ok right now but I really don't know what to do.. has anyone been in this situation before?

Call for medical advice

FAQ Sheet

It says the "polymer is non-toxic but not meant for ingestion" and to "contact a doctor and the poison control centre".

I very much doubt they would put something dangerous in such a product, but you need to make sure. Maybe call 111?

Blablablanamechangagain · 28/05/2023 22:27

I'd be calling 111 at a minimum. I'm sure it's absolutely fine. But better safe than sorry.

Sorry, here's the link

Seek medical advice, not worth the risk when it's such a young baby

BallandBoe · 28/05/2023 22:39

As others have said, call 111 to be on the safe side, though I'm sure there is nothing to worry about. Easier said than done, I know.

Please keep us posted x

Yes call 111. She will very likely be fine, but you need to make sure, as if she is does beed to be checked it's much better to do it ASAP.

Ginnyfromtheblock · 28/05/2023 23:54

Thank you for all your responses.
She seems ok so far. I phoned 111 and after providing the details to the person who received the call, they said a clinician would call me back. That was at 10.20pm. I still haven't heard back yet.

Not sure how long it takes for symptoms to manifest but I'm hoping that window has gone 🤞

You’re doing the right thing to get it checked, but from what you described I’m sure any ingestion would have been very very minimal, not comparable to a whole pad being eaten by a puppy or something.

Any concerning symptoms go to A&E. 111 aren’t always the best with this stuff. my toddler drank bio oil and 111 said not to worry, put her to bed, medical friend said get to A&E and A&E took it very very seriously- it’s lethal if accidentally inhaled. Toddler was fine but had bright orange poop for days.

If you are concerned go to A&E. They won’t judge or think you’re wasting time.

Hi Ginny. I had the same problem with my baby. Was your baby alright and what did the doctor say if you remember.

Lizzzy22 · 22/03/2024 14:42

Is your baby okay? This happened to me as well.
