Here: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35948114/#:~:text=Numerous%20studies%20have%20shown%20that,%2C%20mutagens%2C%20and%20endocrine%20disruptors.

Not only is it bad for the environment but it's probably bad for your health too.

The issues are still being investigated, but:

"Numerous studies have shown that chemicals identified in artificial turf, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalates, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are known carcinogens, neurotoxicants, mutagens, and endocrine disruptors."

I'll admit, I considered it for our teeny tiny garden. Then came to and parked it with artificial swinging Box balls and grey kitchens.

Honestly, the judgment on this thread is off the scale.
Peak MN 😂

Well yes, I judge shit things

It's called having an opinion

Lovely garden @FourFoxSake
And proves that against the odds you can create a lovely green space anywhere.

Vitriolinsanity · 29/05/2023 20:18

@mumofteenss I painted mine with grey paint. Then stencilled it.

stbrandonsboat · 29/05/2023 20:18

I guess it's lucky that people have judged over the years otherwise we'd still be living in mouldy tenements with water running down the walls, having operations without general anaesthetic, eating spinal cords from infected animals and sending kids up chimneys. Crap, harmful things need judging, as do the people who use them, then perhaps one day they'll be consigned to the crap things history books.

DollyTrolly · 29/05/2023 20:22

Having an opinion and being judgemental are two different things.

You can have an option without coming across as superior and judgemental.

There have been so many comments on this thread which appear to have used this thread as an excuse to judge people with less privilege and money than them. That's pretty shit anyway you look at it 🤷🏼‍♀️

OddsocksinmyDocs · 29/05/2023 20:22

I've not read the full thread but:
I have fake grass as its now a usable space for my daughter who is young. Prior to fake grass, the garden was an absolute mud bath and despite several attempts, grass would not grow. Fake grass now means my daughter can play in her own garden.

We've got LOTS of plants in pots etc to help wildlife and last year, even had a bees nest that thrived.

The grass does not get hot either.

RoomOfRequirement · 29/05/2023 20:23

I'm not sure what will be left in the world if the ban it brigade bans everything they deem 'carcinogenic' or 'chemicals'.

DollyTrolly · 29/05/2023 20:25

FFS - this thread is like the school playground - Mnet at its best. A bitch fest.

But apparently that's okay if you're judging 'shit' things.

I hope they're all leading ecologically perfect lives and making choices that are universally accepted and approved by all........

You're not wrong Dolly - let's hope to god no one is using a petrol mower ...

The use of petrol-powered gardening tools, particularly lawn mowers, has been widely criticised for its environmental impact. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a single petrol-powered lawn mower can produce the same amount of air pollution as 11 newer cars driven for an hour. Moreover, petrol-powered tools contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution, and often require frequent maintenance.

Then there's the chemicals, weed and feed, etc., etc..

Don't like being judged and bitched about? Don't buy plastic grass. Easy innit?

Ugh....

FloatingButter · 29/05/2023 20:48

I hate two lawns about the same size.

One is real and takes a lot of maintenance to keep it growing.

Another is artificial and is virtually no maintenance compared to the real one.

The artificial is because we really couldn't use that area and needed something 'grass like'. The real one does grow despite a lot of effort so we continue to nurture it as much as possible.

I don't care what others think about how the artificial lawn looks as it served a purpose but then I think a lot of people have a narrow view and cant contemplate that you can have that as well as preserving a lot of area for natural wildlife. We have hedgehogs, birds, bees, water stations etc for a variety of wildlife etc. Obviously the AG means it isn't 100% natural but then no one I know can claim not to 'harm' the environment 100% either.

Less privilege and money?

People spend thousands on this crap. It's not cheap.

Plastic grass is industrialised littering. It's shit.

Everything is carcinogenic. The mobile you're likely typing this on? Yep. The cars people use daily for unnecessary trips? Yep. The servers used to house...the internet? Yep. Most of our food? Yep.

You don't get to ban everything you don't like.

My last house we put in AG. Absolutely loved it!! The garden became useable again. We kept a border and had pots too. Before, we never had time to mow it, most of the year it was muddy and horrible.
My DH did actually hoover and clean it 😄 as we have dogs so I liked that I knew their piss had been washed off. It was never too hot to walk on. Got it done year before lock down, THANK GOD!! Meant we got to enjoy being outside all the time there were restrictions.

We've moved now and have a baby. Natural grass. I love watching the birds on the lawn, but we never have time to mow it so have a gardener do it. It's not a big space and tbh due to the weather and the grass being wet I've been out in the garden twice in 2 years. I can't wait to get astro so it's actually a useable space. Our neighbours will hate us as they're all gardeners, retired, who are great at growing own veg and having immaculate lawns. But no fucks given 😆😆

You're taking the piss, or are a troll.

What about the terrible effects fake plastic grass has on wildlife? The one small thing we can all do is make our gardens wildlife friendly. It is not difficult. In fact, not mowing your grass is something that will really benefit wildlife. Even just leaving a patch of it untouched will do so much good.

Mademetoxic · 29/05/2023 21:08

towrag · 29/05/2023 13:13

and yes I hate insects, every time I go outside in the summer the little blighters seem to attack me, whether its wasps and bees buzzing round my head or being bitten my mozzies, urrgh it is not relaxing at all.

I hate people. Every time I go outside there's people about.

It's not relaxing at all.

DollyTrolly · 29/05/2023 21:11

Less privilege and money?

People spend thousands on this crap. It's not cheap.

There have been comments about the demographic most likely to favour fake grass...... not everyone commenting is purely concerned with the environmental impact.

TinyTopknot · 29/05/2023 21:20

Plastic grass lovers seem to pop up in all demographics so trying to make this a class issue (how very mumsnet) is pointless. All that these people have in common is that they must be inherently really bloody selfish and care little for nature or wildlife.

verdantverdure · 29/05/2023 21:21

Grass seeds and some clippers are probably cheaper than carcinogenic forever chemical textured plastic. Just saying.

kerryno · 29/05/2023 21:21

In my experience the demographic that gets plastic grass, is totally different to the demographic that owns or installs a log burner.

Nope not ime!

my strong suspicion is that the claim of lots of pots and plastic grass doesn't happen.

Again not my experience.

WouldYouLikeYourMuffinButtered · 29/05/2023 21:22

Quite a few sports pitches and training grounds are AstroTurf, too.

kerryno · 29/05/2023 21:22

I prefer real grass to fake but fake is very common where I am & tbh I do see why some chose it.
