Here: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35948114/#:~:text=Numerous%20studies%20have%20shown%20that,%2C%20mutagens%2C%20and%20endocrine%20disruptors.

Not only is it bad for the environment but it's probably bad for your health too.

The issues are still being investigated, but:

"Numerous studies have shown that chemicals identified in artificial turf, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalates, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are known carcinogens, neurotoxicants, mutagens, and endocrine disruptors."

There was an ominous reference to removal of "solids".

Apparently these should not be power washed or hoovered.

The funniest grim thing was that you should use "ecological washing up liquid". Clearly plastic grass owners would not want to harm the environment!

Lovely garden @stbrandonsboat

And no-one on here decrying plastic grass drives cars I suppose. Stop being busy bodies and mind your own business. There are other things just as bad that we turn a blind eye to. This is Mumsnet at its interfering best.

🙄Always one, cars to many are essentials to life a plastic lawn is not, you are comparing apples to oranges and not looking very clever whilst your at it.

Carry on 😂

Gravel, slabs and potted plants with the odd miniature fruit tree planted with gravel around?

costs hundreds of pounds to get this fitted I have checked

faffadoodledo · 29/05/2023 15:25

Can you show us your relaxing garden which looks so nice @towrag ? Those were your adjectives. I'd be genuinely interested in seeing it.
Have we seen any pics of the plastic lawns on here yet?

I have been careful not to judge - only to wave the flag fir my own style of gardening (which no doubt some would see as weed infested!). But I'd genuinely love to see the alternatives that others love so much

Okay. Well it's obvious that some people are going to find reasons to lay this foul abomination, so what more can I say? What did people do before it was invented?
How do they afford to pay for it as opposed to slabs and gravel?

thinkfast · 29/05/2023 15:47

It's disgusting stuff. I complained to the head when they replaced perfectly good grass verges in the playground with astroturf. They didn't care

faffadoodledo · 29/05/2023 15:51

@thinkfast that's awful! They had something perfectly good! I had schools down as more enlightened than that. Twenty years ago my DC attended a primary in SW London which had its own wilderness area. A pond, rotten logs, wooded trails, WEEDS!! It must have had some kind of protection bc it must be worth millions! And it was a state primary. It was blimmin wonderful

Our school is like this!

Kids come out of school filthy but happy

A whole new housing estate with outside plastic carpet. Dreadful.

@DataNotLore - my strong suspicion is that the claim of lots of pots and plastic grass doesn't happen. I reckon it's plastic grass and plastic chair at best.

I linked to some articles about risks at the time, but the school said they'd looked into it and selected perfectly safe fake grass and underlay - luckily it's not the entire playground- but still

Lonelycrab · 29/05/2023 15:59

Someone near me has just ripped up their garden and removed any signs of life and replaced it with about 1000 sq ft of plastic grass. And to top it all off he’s out there every evening at 7 o’clock with a sodding leaf blower keeping it clear of debris- their garden is directly underneath a large tree. Idiot. Gonna be fun watching them try and use it once it gets proper hot.

Vile stuff and should be banned.

faffadoodledo · 29/05/2023 16:00

Well we won't know will we @TheHandmaiden? Because I don't think the plastic lawn people will ever show us.
Come on people - if you're defending g it, show us how great it is!

TheHandmaiden · 29/05/2023 16:02

I note those pictures have it laid edge to edge, no borders at all. It's plastic carpet, nothing else

Simpsonn · 29/05/2023 16:05

TinyTopknot · 29/05/2023 12:10

What a bloody diabolical attitude.

You must lead a very sheltered life if you think thats 'diabolical ' 😂😂😂😂😂

WhatNoRaisins · 29/05/2023 16:06

I've seen some that looks ok from a distance but it's obviously plastic when you touch it. Couldn't imagine sitting out on it or walking on bare feet. Give me a messy, crappy lawn with actual grass any day.

Simpsonn · 29/05/2023 16:10

SoupDragon · 29/05/2023 09:21

Where on earth do you live that grass has been "wet" and the weather hasn't been good enough to go into the garden more than twice in 2 years?

The grass needs lots of consistent sun on it to dry all the way to the ground. So that rules it out in the morning. Then still damp in areas later in the day.

That combined with having it mowed in conjunction of wanting to use it, means it's rarely used.

2 times since we moved in.

That's the stupidest fucking thing I've seen in years!

stbrandonsboat · 29/05/2023 16:25

People are just so removed from the natural world now. In my estate, probably about a dozen people, myself included, have proper gardens. The rest are just concrete parking with areas of neglected grass at the back or total paving. It's barren and miserable. The trees that the developers have planted have mostly died because they didn't lay proper top soil, just crap mixed with rubble underneath. We've had to struggle to establish both front and back gardens and the soil's still not great. I can only plant hardy bog standard stuff.

A garden doesn't have to be hard work or time consuming, particularly if you're planting for wildlife.

verdantverdure · 29/05/2023 17:02

New build estates round here have almost as depressing gardens.

Bare green lawn and bare grey slabs generally.

And they chopped down countless hedgerows and trees to build them.

verdantverdure · 29/05/2023 17:08

It's the smell I used to hate when we lived next door to one.

If we could smell heated plastic then the carcinogenic "Forever Chemicals" were in our nose and we were breathing them in.
