Help me- I cannot STAND my children’s noise

I have two DC, 3.5 and 1.5 (and another on the way, god help me).

In the last few months I seem to have become really hyper sensitive to their noise. Just regular playing noise is fine, and actually their crying (when they’re genuinely crying) is also fine.

But when they start fighting with each other over some toy or other, or get frustrated or angry or upset about something, or they’re just having a yelling contest (and one of these things is basically always happening), they both do this piercing, ear-splitting, high-pitched whiny shriek, which makes my whole body tense, my blood pressure shoot up and I feel real anger, and I have to cover my ears or just walk away from them into another room and shut the door - and invariably, one or both of them will just follow me and carry on, so there’s basically no escape.

I can’t carry on like this. They make this noise damn near all day every day and it’s really starting to affect me, to the point of almost having panic attacks. What the hell can I do?

Loop earplugs can be really helpful

Hillrunning · 28/05/2023 13:22

Yep, loop or flare clamer
Life savers

Another recommendation for loop earplugs. I hate earplugs but these really work for parenting!!

I suffer from misophonia and have these:

Flare Calmer – Ear Plugs Alternative – Reduce Annoying Noises Without Blocking Sound – Soft Reusable Silicone - Mint amzn.eu/d/19SdSNu

Complete life saver.

Have both loop quiet and loop engage - for kids is suggest engage, takes the pain off the noise but not so much that you cant hear them if they need you. Loop quiet seems to cut out too much.

One thing to watch out for - I experienced these same feelings when I was pregnant with DC3 and I think it was a precursor to pretty bad PND. I was probably depressed during my pregnancy too tbh.

Well, I’ve been wearing the flare calmer earplugs all day and have just had to shut myself in my bedroom again to escape my children’s noise because I was about to have a panic attack… so clearly they don’t work.
Ordered some Loop Engage ones too… fingers crossed!
