Freezer door left open

Stressedafff · 26/05/2023 01:29

My freezer door wasn’t shut properly last night from 11pm to 10am.
stuff had started thawing
Worst affected culprits were some chicken strips and fish nuggets. I sorted it out and they’re back frozen. Am I safe to eat these now or is it best off throwing away?

I have emetophobia so do tend to be abit too cautious but they’re already cooked before freezing anyway so just wondering

Throw away any meat products that have partially defrosted.

VonThorn · 26/05/2023 01:33

I assume they were still very cold? It will be fine. I think this happens to me about 10 times a year - I never throw anything away Grin

Weesiewoo · 26/05/2023 01:34

I think the rule is you can' refreeze raw meat/fish/chicken.
If you were to cook and refreeze that would be ok.

Destiny123 · 26/05/2023 01:36

U can't refreeze partially defrosted stuff that's asking for food poisoning u need to fully defrost it thrn cook and either eat or refreeze once cooked

Anotherparkingthread · 26/05/2023 01:46

People on here are alarmist by nature, it's fine.

chef here that owned a restaurant until I retired 2 month ago. basically as long as they still have some ice crystals in the middle meat can be refrozen. as for nuggets and chicken strips. Unless they were still partially frozen. NO. They are processed meats and they thaw very quickly. that takes them into the danger zone very fast. I would not risk it at all. I threw out 3 cases of chicken strips a few months ago as a cook had taken them out to defrost thinking they were chicken BREASTS and then forgot to put them in the fridge overnight. 130 dollars down the drain but better that than giving someone food poisoning. Fish would be even faster to get to that point. Please don't risk it.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/05/2023 03:37

Happened to me a few times. I just shut the door and re froze it. It wasn't fully defrosted anyway.

Tadah2 · 26/05/2023 03:59

I was very ill with food poisoning from not realising a housemate had left the freezer open and I ate some chicken pieces. Personally, I wouldn’t say it is worth it. But then I seem to be more prone to food poisoning than most…

Lifesagamethentheytaketheboardaway · 26/05/2023 04:00

If there were still ice crystals then it’s all fine to refreeze. In that time, it’ll be fine.

FelicityFlops · 26/05/2023 04:10

Doesn't your freezer have an alarm?
In summer, if I take more than a couple of minutes to remove something - whilst leaving the door open - it "screams" at me.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 26/05/2023 07:02

HOnestly I would chuck them and be safe.

ittakes2 · 26/05/2023 07:43

If this happens again pop in the fridge and cook same day.

suburbophobe · 26/05/2023 07:45

Chuck it.

Nordicrain · 26/05/2023 07:49

definitely do not eat meat products that have thawed and refrozen.
