Garden furniture - why so expensive?!

Currently looking into good quality garden furniture and it's SO expensive, almost costing more than indoor sofa and chairs . Why is this the case?

Marketplace also full of scammers (fake profiles) listing expensive looking stuff for low price so limited option to buy pre owned

It’s often not only very expensive but also crap. Ours is teak and cost loads. After one summer a couple of the chairs have fallen apart and are now a bunch of sticks.

We bought a teak table and chairs set when we sorted our garden out (for the first time 😂) about 10 years ago. It cost more than our indoor set and were told it would last us for absolutely years. Now, we do still have it but it’s absolutely fucked and has been for about 4 years but until it actually breaks and it unusable it is staying!
We were looking for an outdoor sofa set, wood not rattan. Saw something that appealed, was 2.5K and the cushions were an additional 1.5K! We are looking again. Don’t actually mind paying the money for quality that will last. It’s when it’s shit and looks crap after a years use that I get cross.

Totally agree. What also annoys me is that one of the reasons we bought it is because we have a teak garden bench my mum and dad bought more than half a century ago and it's still in amazing condition and rock solid. Realise it's not the wood it's the crap workmanship and glue vs proper joints.

We have a decent set by Kettler. Sofa, dining table, two armchairs and two stools. 11 years old, furniture left outside uncovered all year, cushions are regularly drenched by unexpected rain but do come in for the winter or longer periods of rain. In essence it’s almost as good as new and has certainly been more hard wearing than any indoor furniture we’ve ever had.

In the summer our garden is the best room in the house so I’m glad we made the investment.

I've also got a Kettler dining set: a metal mesh table and 4 chairs. It's been outside uncovered since we bought during lockdown in 2020. Looks like new still (in fact the blurb advised not to cover it up).

But, my word, its all exploded in price . We bought ours for around £450 ish - that was pushing it, but choice was limited and the wait was long back in lockdown. The same set now retails for around £700. Couldn't believe it.

Totally agree, and find it ridiculous too.

We got ours on Groupon for a sensible price and, surprisingly, it was really good quality. It's last about 5 years so far and the cushions could do with a refresh, but compared to the price of similar in e.g. garden centres it was well worht it.

I have bought expensive and it didn't last. I now just buy cheap and renew every few years.

stevalnamechanger · 12/06/2023 22:20

Seems to be guaranteed for 5 years so fingers crossed 😂

I thought the same until I started looking secondhand, but then I also came across this site and found some decent deals compared to what I was seeing elsewhere. Still not dirt cheap, but at least you can find sets that don’t feel like a total rip-off. Some of the clearance stuff is worth checking out too.
