Garden furniture - why so expensive?!

stevalnamechanger · 24/05/2023 10:34

Currently looking into good quality garden furniture and it's SO expensive, almost costing more than indoor sofa and chairs . Why is this the case?

Marketplace also full of scammers (fake profiles) listing expensive looking stuff for low price so limited option to buy pre owned

No advice but just to agree wholeheartedly. I’ve been looking recently and the prices are absolutely shocking!

Firstmonthfree · 24/05/2023 10:35

In some cases it’s because it is so bulky and doesn’t collapse or disassemble so it costs a fortune to ship

HappyHamsters · 24/05/2023 10:36

I think it's the cost of materials. I look at Wowcher who have some good deals and Wilko for lights

KimberleyClark · 24/05/2023 10:37

I agree. With our weather it’s really not worth spending a lot on outdoor furniture,
but it’s not unreasonable to want decent quality stuff.j

dontlookbackyourenotgoingthatway · 24/05/2023 10:37

Garden furniture is a weird, weird world.

Honestly, just go to IKEA and get something cheaper and made of actual wood.

. All that grey, plastic rattan stuff is both crap and madly over-priced.

Mutabiliss · 24/05/2023 10:40

I don't know but I agree, it seems madly expensive for what it is! I really dislike the plasticky rattan stuff so am looking for something comfy-looking in wood - it does not exist for less than about 2k. Ridiculous.

Coroico97 · 24/05/2023 10:41

It’s often not only very expensive but also crap. Ours is teak and cost loads. After one summer a couple of the chairs have fallen apart and are now a bunch of sticks.

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/05/2023 10:43

The cost of shipping from china etc., has rocketed. If it’s wooden, the price of materials is sky high now too. Plus, shameful profiteering as with food and clothing.

Mine has been fine for about 5 years

Well it’s got to withstand the weather which indoor furniture generally doesn’t ;)

what are you looking for?

we’ve recently bought from here

and are very happy with it. The cushions need storing as they aren’t all weather, but the ones you can leave out all the time seemed to be atleast 4 or 5 times the price. For that I can put cushions away!

Tesco has bistro sets for £30 right now and they look decent. I think garden furniture has come down this year and last year compared to 2020/21 when it was shockingly expensive and sold out everywhere.

Inawoodtherelived · 24/05/2023 10:49

I agree! It’s really expensive for even a basic set.

IKEA have some good offers at the end of the summer season normally. I wouldn’t be buying it now if you are looking for a bargain.

oldwhyno · 24/05/2023 10:49

"almost costing more than indoor sofa and chairs"

why wouldn't it be similar to the cost of indoor furniture? The vast majority of the Wcost to the consumer isn't the materials used. They're low volume, large bulky items, expensive to ship and warehouse. Those costs don't change if it's made of rattan or mahogany.

they're also luxury goods for people with spare cash and lifestyle aspirations.

expensive yes, but lots of things feels expensive to me at the moment.

Thanks, good to know! Annoyingly all the sofas I like are out of stock at my local Ikea. I might keep an eye out for a bargain in the sales 😁

Im looking for a cheap set. I can't find this. Is it in store only, do you know?
Thanks

Well my view was that it's literally an aluminum frame and some cushions for 2 grand made in china - no legs , no springs , no complex frame

My £2000 sofa is made in the UK with lots of parts , the filling of the cushions isn't just foam etc

It is expensive for anything of decent size and quality.

We ended up accumulating a nice set by restoring old stuff. A neighbour was giving away an old table with wrought iron legs. I Hammerited the legs and DH replaced the top using decking planks. I bought six old metal chairs for £25 on ebay and cleaned and Hammerited them. Added some bright seat cushions and it all looks lovely and much more expensive than we could afford new.

I also bought an old steamer chair for £15 from Preloved. Sanded and spray-varnished it and bought a new cushion and I absolutely love it.

AnObserverInThisDarkWorld · 24/05/2023 11:47

Wooden furniture is expensive because wood prices are huge rn tbh
Plus storage of them isn't easy

And you have to make sure to take proper care of it. Treat the wood with wax or stain to protect it. Needs doing every year

Bistro sets with a table and 2 chairs are generally cheaper. Try B&M, Home Bargains etc

This looks good thanks !

I am just surprised that you could buy a small second hand car for the price of a good quality patio set 😂

Try the John Pye auction website. It takes a bit of figuring out unfortunately, but they get the overstock from places like John Lewis and it is always worth having a look.

OooohKeepYourKnickersOn · 24/05/2023 11:53

We got ours from the local garden centre
Shipping from China is expensive

WednesdaysPlaits · 24/05/2023 11:53

Ive been trying to buy replacement slats for an old bench with cast iron sides. its completely ridiculous but it costs as much to buy replacement slats as it does to buy a whole new bench!

Mizzl45 · 24/05/2023 11:53

Have a look on JYSK. Still not super cheap but nowhere near £2000!

Scottishlanza · 24/05/2023 12:00

We also bought from Jysk and are happy with the purchase. What I would say is that you need to make sure the structure is aluminum not steel. Steel rusts and is very heavy to move around. Our aluminum/glass table is about 15 years old and still going strong

PrinnyPaupersPurse · 24/05/2023 12:09

I totally agree about the prices being horrific, I have a permanent marquee set up for 9-10 months off the year and I decided to get a second hand Bamboo conservatory suite from eBay. Cost me £90 on eBay with a man and a van to collect it from the other side of my small town. I got extra strong super glue and stuck silicone cups onto the feet so they don't absorb rain water. It's on its 3rd year now and is starting to show wear but it's amazingly comfortable, I just bin bag the cushions after bonfire night and then get them out again at Easter. Cover the furniture in a heavy duty tarp from mid November to Easter.

The previous owners were going to throw it in the tip of it didn't sell so I've done a good deed recycling it and avoided the trap of spending £1200 on an equivalent Modern set. All our visitors content in how comfortable it is and such a nice change to the grey rattan .
