Garden furniture - why so expensive?!

Currently looking into good quality garden furniture and it's SO expensive, almost costing more than indoor sofa and chairs . Why is this the case?

Marketplace also full of scammers (fake profiles) listing expensive looking stuff for low price so limited option to buy pre owned

John Lewis' own brand will still be manufactured at the same place as the stuff in The Range. If its by Keter then they manufacturer stuff in the UK (as well as Benelux and Middle East)

I got this from Home Bargains £50

We have a decent set by Kettler. Sofa, dining table, two armchairs and two stools. 11 years old, furniture left outside uncovered all year, cushions are regularly drenched by unexpected rain but do come in for the winter or longer periods of rain. In essence it’s almost as good as new and has certainly been more hard wearing than any indoor furniture we’ve ever had.

In the summer our garden is the best room in the house so I’m glad we made the investment.

Cute set on Aldi £199

My Aldi double egg hanging chair is my favourite piece of garden furniture. Think sits sold out at the moment though.

B and Q is 20% off online at the moment. I discovered this by accident.
I went in on Sunday to have a look and really liked a wooden set with cushions in there that was £495 (denia)
some discussion was had in store over whether I’d fit the box in my mini so we decided to have it delivered instead. Went to order and found the 20% all over their site. Paid £396 including delivery.

i bought a very cheap rattan set when we moved in 5 years ago. It’s ok, but it’s not especially comfortable. My daughter in law bought the B&Q one last summer and I knew from sitting in their garden that it was really comfortable. If you can get out there and test all the better.

Im looking for a cheap set. I can't find this. Is it in store only, do you know?
Thanks

I think it's £30 for the little bistro table and £20 each for the chairs

Coxspurplepippin · 24/05/2023 23:20

Costco have some good quality outdoor furniture. We bought a garden bench about 7 years ago. It's still in great condition, robust, no splits, proper heavy duty. No idea what the price would be now but I think it was £299 when we bought it.

Colinorpercy · 24/05/2023 23:26

I totally agree and had the same conversation with a friend last year! That said we did treat ourselves to some decent quality stuff and I have to say I do love it. The top of the table is really good quality and it’s got weight to it so not flimsy. It will never get left out in the garden all winter though, I am definitely looking after it well for what it cost!

We have a few pieces from there. Treat it every couple of years and it lasts really well. It's super comfy and very well made for the price.

It's not cheap, crappy stuff but it's not £1000's either. It's a really good middle ground.

I can recommend keeping an eye on Wayfair Open Box Deals. Basically it is returned Wayfair items or slow selling items. I got a patio sofa/chaise & glass table for £250 a couple of years ago. I can't spot anything wrong with it so Ive no idea why it got returned - but what a bargain.

Hillbilly · 25/05/2023 00:23

We bought our outdoor wooden table and chairs from John Lewis 15 years ago and they are only just showing signs of age. I should probably use teak oil on everything.

afromom · 25/05/2023 00:31

We got this set last year, it's lasted well through the winter and is nice quality. The cushions are really comfy, in the summer evenings I prefer it to our sofas!

You have such a choice of garden furniture in the UK.
Here in Ireland not so much.
The rattan offerings here at my price level are either brown or grey. I don't want more grey in my life Smile

piedbeauty · 25/05/2023 07:35

We bought a cheap garden table and chairs from B&Q. Table wouldn't assemble - screws in wrong places, etc. Finally bought more expensive table and chairs - and they have been so worth it! Much better quality. So I think you get what you pay for.

User1529865 · 25/05/2023 07:43

We have alway bought garden furniture in the sale, our last set was a couple of years ago in M&S sale, usually late summer. Demand will be high at the moment because of the weather

PocketfulOfMiracles · 25/05/2023 10:25

That’s unlucky. Mine went together perfectly easily and is well made and incredibly comfortable.
No reason why it shouldn’t last as long as a more expensive one when treated with Danish oil every year.

Peppadog · 25/05/2023 10:32

Look on gumtree, noone checks it anymore. last week I bought a 6 seater table and chairs and parasol for a tenner, great condition, comfortable. Nothing fancy but we don't need fancy. Really pleased with it.

Our metal coffee set (2/3 seater sofa and 2 armchairs with glass-topped coffee table) is 9 years old and going strong. We have a storage box for the cushions and I replaced the cushion pads with denser foam after a couple of years as the originals went flat. The set was £349.00 in 2014 and the foam was £112.00 in 2016. The frames still look great once they’ve been cleaned each spring/summer, as they get mouldy over the winter!

I ended up caving and buying a beautiful set from Harbour which I am going to see as a long term purchase 😂😩

I went round 10 + garden centres and wasn't very happy with the quality - sat on this Harbour one at a friends and fell in love .

Amazing delivery team, had trust pilot reviews and very comfy .

The bad thing is now this beautiful set makes the indoor furniture look very shoddy 😭😭
