Do you really get your five a day?

YABU - yes
YANBU - no

I aim to eat healthily where I can but realistically I probably only have 3 portions of fruit or veg most days. Some days more and some days I only have one.
In a normal day, I’ll have an apple, a bowl of berries/some grapes and then possibly a chickpea curry. Sometimes I add spinach to this and sometimes I don’t. Obviously that’s only 3 a day really as I’m not having that many berries or chickpeas.

It’s only made up because people weren’t likely to attempt the true recommendation of 8-10

Not on MNs though obvs!

I guess it's easier if you're a veggie but lots of the meals posters are eating are low carb, I couldn't eat just salad for lunch daily.

ChattermaxFromBluey · 23/05/2023 22:33

I try to, but probably don’t hit the mark some days. Others, I might have over. So it probably all balances out.

today, I had banana and blackberries with breakfast. At lunch, I had a handful of sliced cucumbers with my main food. At dinner time, I had onion and celery in my casserole with carrots, peas, cabbage, Cauli & broccoli. I’m aware some wouldn’t be counted as full potions, probably.

We had a few slices of melon after.

this is all cus we buy a fruit & veg box each week from a local greengrocer & everything needs eating up!

How are peoples teeth coping with all the fruit?! 😆

Absolutely fine....

I dunno, maybe my saliva is extra special?

I only clean my teeth once a day, too. The horror!

(I also drink loads of PLJ, which is probably much more of a risk...)

Mincedpies · 23/05/2023 22:34

I easily have 10-13 a day, every day. Some people maintain the “5 a day” thing is a load of bullshit but it makes a big difference to the way I look and feel. I’m a very healthy “my body is a temple” type anyway so I don’t struggle getting the fruit and veg I need.

CindersAgain · 23/05/2023 22:36

curtainsfringe · 23/05/2023 22:22

@CindersAgain no I didn't. I know they count in the "30 a week recommendations or whatever it is" but didn't think they did in the 5 a day?

Yeah they do. You can only count pulses as one of the five, but yeah.

tillyandmilly · 23/05/2023 22:36

Can’t eat fruit as gives me stomach ache /acid reflux - I eat vegetables at dinner time - either Brussels sprouts or peas or salad of an evening - but never been keen on vegetables!

Trainstrike · 23/05/2023 22:36

Partytastic · 23/05/2023 21:51

I’ve started skipping breakfast as I’m fasting so I’m having less so some days I only just hit 5 but usually a far amount more.

Those people who are only eating 3 a day, can I ask what you are acting eating? I’m struggling to imagine what you eat.

I don't eat breakfast, I had a chicken wrap and cereal bar for lunch, and Mac and cheese for dinner. I had about 5 chocolate biscuits through the day. That's pretty typical for me. Sometimes I snack on fruit too but I don't really like much veg.

Fairislefandango · 23/05/2023 22:38

The competitive fruit/veg eaters are out in force tonight!

Confused It's not a competition. Lots of people eat plenty of fruit and veg because it's... well...normal food. A normal and nice-tasting part of a normal human diet! I've always eaten fruit and veg. I like it!

curtainsfringe · 23/05/2023 22:38

I mentioned teeth because my dcs dentist warned me about dc eating too much fruit. They said they see a lot of dc with decay from too much fruit/dried fruit/fruit juice.

I eat far too many sweets but have never had a filing so hopefully dc will inherit my teeth!

I don't eat breakfast so an average day might be:

Lunch - grapes & cherry tomatoes
Dinner - brocoli & onions/garlic (not sure that counts as a portion?)

Actually I did well today and have remembered I had beetroot for lunch too.

I might also chuck an apple into the mix if I remember they're in the fruit bowl!

curtainsfringe · 23/05/2023 22:39

@CindersAgain ok but I still don't think I got 5 in today.

Fairislefandango · 23/05/2023 22:41

How are peoples teeth coping with all the fruit?!

Well I eat quite a bit of it. I brush my teeth twice a day. The only problem I've had with my teeth in years was cracking a tooth on an unexpected bit of bone in a slice of chorizo!

BuggersMuddle · 23/05/2023 22:42

Not always, but usually yes and frequently more so it probably balances out:

Breakfast:

  • 1-3 portions (usually 2) often smoothie or e.g. grapefruit + juice + some kind of egg dish

Lunch:

  • Usually 2 - some kind of salad with pulses + protein
  • Occasionally sandwich + piece of fruit

Dinner:

  • Varies wildly. Several veggie dishes on rotation (so last night's would've been 3), most regular chillies etc. have at least 1-2. Of course some cba / takeaway dishes will be way less healthy.
curtainsfringe · 23/05/2023 22:42

I also eat out quite a lot so think that limits portion sizes of veg.

curtainsfringe · 23/05/2023 22:45

I do often have a mindful chef smoothies for breakfast but they only count as 1 portion due to size.

WiddlinDiddlin · 23/05/2023 22:46

Nah.

Todays a pretty typical food list?

Half a protein works shake.

Ryvita crispbreads with a thin scrape of lurpak and marmite ( x4)

Crinkle chips, peas, quorn burger

Fruit salad serving - todays was mango, pineapple and passion fruit.

So discounting chips as im fairly certain they're not one - 4. And three of those were fruit.

Several days a week i also have hummus and half a red pepper, but today I chose a 2 hour 'nap' instead of lunch really.

I'd like to eat more but more veg tends to trigger gastroparesis which then royally fucks up my blood glucose which I could do without. Mostly it is laziness though!

Mindovermatter247 · 23/05/2023 22:54

It’s a bit up and down to be fair, one day I’ll have 2/3 another day I’ll have 6/7.. just depends what I’ve got on, what I have planned for food etc. today I had 2, yesterday I had 6.

Rightnowstraightaway · 23/05/2023 22:54

Usually.

Breakfast includes raisins, dried apricots, a banana and orange juice.

Lunch will usually include carrot/tomato/cucumber plus a piece of fruit. Sometimes a vegetable based soup.

Dinner will usually include at least two vegetables (usually onions in there somewhere!) or pulses.

I found I ate more when I got a veg box.

chessica · 23/05/2023 23:00

There’s such a mix on here. And to those asking, yes I do have veg that’s just what I ate today. I didn’t know veg was better than fruit though in terms of sugar levels. I was sure it was only fruit juice that was bad for your teeth not fruit itself. Shows what I know! Will have to watch that

I seem to be in a minority who doesn't snack. Just have three meals a day, sometimes two, if I am up late I only have breakfast or lunch. So no. Hardly ever and I can't eat more than two veg with a meal, I get full. I'm not even that thin, so it's not undereating, I just don't get hungry enough to eat enough portions of fruit and veg.

Weetabix for breakfast, cottage cheese for lunch (nothing else, just a tub of Langleys cottage cheese) and then pretzels and sweets as snacks all afternoon is a typical day.

SwordToFlamethrower · 24/05/2023 00:09

Today I've had
Banana
Strawberries
Apple
Onion
Garlic
Peppers
Courgette
Tomatoes
Salad leaves
Cucumber
Celery
Carrot
Broccoli

And a variety of fresh herbs.

Not a typical day but usually get 5 or more a day on average.

It's acid in some fruits, sugar only if you eat dry ones.
Some people on mn demonise fruit a bit. I think it comes from the carbs are evil thing and it spread

I heavily question how do they know it's from fruit. About million things can weaken your enamel. From acidic (citric acid so might be from general diets too) fruit-especially juices rather than fresh fruit, to antibiotics, sparkly water, acid reflux, grinding etc. Last but not least, plain old bad food hygiene.
