Outfit compliments really about weight loss

HiddenGiraffes · 21/05/2023 15:59

The other night I went out for drinks in a very plain, casual outfit: just a button down shirt and jeans. I had half a dozen people I know compliment my shirt, which was truly nothing very interesting or exciting.

I've recently lost a bit of weight (10-12 down to an 8).

AIBU to think that when people complimented my shirt, they were really saying that I've visibly got thinner and they approve? Maybe not even consciously, just because clothes do hang nicely when you are very skinny.

It's making me a bit worried I will put the weight back on, if I'm honest. I'm wondering if everyone thought I looked a state before.

I think it's more a you thing than them.

JustFrustrated · 21/05/2023 16:25

Wow..that's a reach.

A 10 to an 8 is barely noticeable.

Can't you just take the compliment as intended?

Why would it make you put weight back on?

User63847484848 · 21/05/2023 16:27

I think I know what you mean
Not so much about outfits but my weight fluctuates and well meaning people comment on how great I’m looking and how much weight I’ve lost, but it mainly serves to make me think they must’ve thought I looked bad before. And then when I regain weight I have in my mind all the people who commented when I lost it must be noticing I’ve put it back on.
in reality I suspect people care a lot less than I think they do!

AllIeveknewonlyou · 21/05/2023 16:28

Just sounds like they liked your shirt.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/05/2023 16:28

Just say thank you and move on. They liked your shirt ,end of.

AnObserverInThisDarkWorld · 21/05/2023 16:36

Sounds like something from a sketch show
P1: I like your shirt
P2: omg are you saying I was fat before?

rookiemere · 21/05/2023 16:54

I know exactly what you mean.

I've recently lost about a stone, going from a 14-16 to a 12-14 ( still got a bit to lose). I notice I've been getting a lot of compliments on my clothes and I'm semi taking it as they have noticed I have lost weight but don't want to mention it directly.

Also as I've lost a bit of weight I have been wearing a few brighter, fitted things so it could actually be about the clothes.

Anyway I'm taking the compliments at face value Smile.

Fluffypiki · 21/05/2023 17:05

I absolutely get it, I have lost 15kg.
I didn't do a proper diet but changed my lifestyle, I had bulimia in my teens and twenties and decided in my forties to eat well, no more binging or skipping meal. EVERYONE come to me saying how amazing I look, it is nice but I hate it. I did it (quietly) for me but because everyone is commenting on it, it gives me anxiety when i was happy doing my thing before. Now I HAVE to be careful because what if I take it all back? That would be very embarrassing and every one would judge me, now I feel like I am doing a diet when it never felt like it before.
So every time someone comment I smile and change the conversation.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 21/05/2023 17:06

A 10 to an 8 is noticeable and for me is a 2 stone loss. So well done on shifting the weight.

And you are right that clothes hang better on a smaller frame. Especially if they were tight before but now fit well.

CryptoFascist · 21/05/2023 17:10

I know what you mean OP.
When I was smaller people would compliment my outfits or just make general "you look nice" remarks.
Gained 3ish stone and no comments at all about outfit, hair or makeup - the weight doesn't suit me whatsoever, so nobody's saying I look nice because I just...don't!
My personal style hasn't changed though.
Lots of people look fantastic with some weight on them but unfortunately I'm not one of those people.

GoodVibesHere · 21/05/2023 17:11

I agree OP and it happens to me. I think they're too polite to say 'you look better' or 'you've lost weight' so they compliment your clothes. I'd prefer it if they didn't comment at all but people just do.

Dacadactyl · 21/05/2023 17:12

What's wrong with them saying they liked your outfit, if they really mean you look nicer now you've lost weight?

I look better when I'm thinner, but I can't always be arsed to do what's required to maintain it (particularly over winter)

I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Kaaardiffgalnow · 21/05/2023 17:13

I get the opposite. When people say, 'You look well," I know it's that I've put on a few pounds.

Good thing I don't care.

This!

It must be exhausting analysing compliments and turning them into some sort of insult.

Thats definitely noticeable!! I think you are right op

Sisisimone · 21/05/2023 18:23

If 6 people complimented your shirt then the likelihood is that you were wearing a nice shirt that suited you.
I agree with pp that a change in weight of 1 dress size is barely noticeable.
Why on earth would anyone think you looked a state at size 10?
You sound self obsessed and exhausting. I say things like 'I like your top' very often. I dont expect said top owner to go home and self obsess about their weight and whether they looked crap the last time I saw them!

Ah this was my first thought!😅

Do you have trouble taking compliments? I know if someone says something nice to me my reply is always to make a joke. I certainly don't judge the person!

Weird stealth brag thread.

MinervaSaidThar · 21/05/2023 18:33

I'm wondering if everyone thought I looked a state before.

Yes, because everyone thinks all people sized 10-12 look a state 🙄

DryIce · 21/05/2023 19:55

They may just be complimenting your shirt! I would try and take it like that, it will be the easiest way.

I do know what you mean though, my mother in law comments on everyone's weight loss, no matter how small - she always notices! She is at least tactful enough not to outright mention weight gain, but the silence says it all (also pointed comments like she bought something a size bigger for them 😉). But it does make me feel like she must be sizing me up like a prize cow whenever she sees me!
