To ask what one thing you would ban to help the environment?

Following on from @GADday’s well meaning thread about disposable sanitary products being an option to phase out to help the environment - what one thing would you ban to help the environment?

Let’s not get into sanitary products again. That thread makes clear that disposable sanitary products are probably here to stay for a range of reasons…

Ill go first:

Private planes. I’m struggling to think of any reason why they’re necessary especially for short flights.

People against flying - I’m assuming you have all your family in this country and have done all the travelling you want to do?

Ladykryptonite · 21/05/2023 11:03

Inanimate object, a trip in a car costs more than just the petrol

My post specifically stated that it was about disabled people who have motability cars so yes, in this case, the cost is just the petrol. Disability benefits fund the car and maintenance, servicing, insurance, road tax etc.

Dutch1e · 21/05/2023 11:07

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 21/05/2023 10:54

@Dutch1e and how would that work realistically? I live rurally and work in community nursing visiting a huge elderly population and I doubt that is going to change with further pushes to more hospital at home based care so will always need a car. This is the stuff that makes me switch off honestly and not want to engage

There's always someone with an edge case who starts whataboutting. Yes, your job necessitates driving, no worries.

You know very well that car ownership is predominantly about people having limited options or being lazy. Good urban planning and infrastructure is needed to combat the former, the latter will only change when it becomes frowned upon to drive (the way smoking is frowned upon but was once entirely normal)

Personally, yes - but my idea of rationing would be to allow scope for people to visit family overseas or travel, just not in an unlimited way.

No, far from it. But I'll never fly again unless it is an absolute emergency.

Funding/aid/support etc. for educating women to a high level as this keeps populations down and it is good for women.

Much better public transport.

Fast fashion should be unfashionable

InanimateObjects · 21/05/2023 11:03

@SerendipityJane I agree that will probably be the long-term answer to the car issue, autonomous shared fleet. Much more efficient.

Just need to weaken that primal (rather male) urge to "own" something and get used to sharing more.

As I say, it will come when enough people are replaced.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 21/05/2023 11:10

and hopefully that day will come long after I no longer work or require one to do my job.

I absolutely agree that many car ownerships are there for convenience or laziness but unfortunately those in power will tar us all with the same brush with nonsense blanket policies and ‘bannings’ good luck to them
if they ever need a community nurse visit

It’s ok, we’re going to go back to marrying people from the next village at the furthest so that won’t be a problem any more. Any migration in the future will be happening very very slowly, on foot.

Lcb123 · 21/05/2023 11:11

Bottled water where safe tap water is available. Having more than 1 child per person. SUVs unless you live on a farm.

Ladykryptonite · 21/05/2023 11:11

Inanimate - ah I see, yes that is cheaper

Oh stop. Obviously there will be exceptions but we're writing Mumsnet comments not policy fgs.

Atishoos · 21/05/2023 11:12

We are just a little dot on world pollution scales, so until places like China and India etc. get their act together we are merely pissing in the wind.

Every little helps I suppose, but it seems to be a fruitless exercise to me due to the above.

InanimateObjects · 21/05/2023 11:12

We're likely to see mass migration on a previously unimaginable scale in the next 50 years as many parts of the planet become uninhabitable/ underwater. It will be anything but "slow".

Agree.

Giggorata · 21/05/2023 11:14

Single use plastic. Bring back glass, with deposits if necessary, use waxed paper and bamboo and stop putting shrink wrap on fruit and vegetables and so forth. Even the paper bag for bread has a fucking plastic window in it - why?

Wipes and “disposable” cleaning wipes. Only because people are still putting them down the loo instead of in the bin, where they could happily biodegrade without blocking up the system.

We should also bring back those very sombre Public Information short films and include ones that show the effects of pollution in sea, sewage, etc.

True, although something to remember is how much pollution in China etc is a direct result of the rest ofthe world continuing to buy these hypothetical banned goods.

Timeforchangeithink · 21/05/2023 11:15

Humans but I think it's already been said.

Quinoawoman · 21/05/2023 11:15

Working full-time. Let's face it - the reason most people don't do more for the environment is because they are too busy to do things the old-fashioned way and really need the convenience.

KimberleyClark · 21/05/2023 11:16

Toiletries in hotel rooms unless they are soap/shampoo bars or provided in big refillable bottles, and those single use shower caps.

I’d be rationing flying so that you could fly for one holiday/trip abroad each year. Possibly people who don’t use their allowance could sell theirs to those who need to fly more often.

InanimateObjects · 21/05/2023 11:00

These sort of threads often show up how little most people research facts and data, and relative impacts of various things.

Just 100 global companies are greating iver 70% of global emissions. That might be the place to start...

amp.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2017/jul/10/100-fossil-fuel-companies-investors-responsible-71-global-emissions-cdp-study-climate-change

That is one of the worst articles I have ever read. It is completely misleading to the point of being an actual lie. The study betrays all the carbon accounting rules, either GHG Protocol or ISO 14k series. I'm horrified the the CDP sponsored it as they should know better.

JennyForeigner · 21/05/2023 11:17

Plastic grass. It's so offensively horribly unnecessary. Like something from the last days of Rome.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 21/05/2023 11:18

Smartphones. Consume electricity , consume data storage, consume rare minerals, use plastic.

not great for society , either.
