To ask what one thing you would ban to help the environment?

Following on from @GADday’s well meaning thread about disposable sanitary products being an option to phase out to help the environment - what one thing would you ban to help the environment?

Let’s not get into sanitary products again. That thread makes clear that disposable sanitary products are probably here to stay for a range of reasons…

Ill go first:

Private planes. I’m struggling to think of any reason why they’re necessary especially for short flights.

Plastics and fossil fuel run cars

CheekyHobson · 21/05/2023 10:50

“Fossil fuels” is the only meaningful answer on this thread.

We’re not going to save humankind by faffing around banning fake grass (though of course banning fossil fuels or making them an incredibly restricted substance would take care of that too).

EatYourVegetables · 21/05/2023 10:50

Private car ownership

TooodleOoo · 21/05/2023 10:51

In a population collapse?

A what now? If you mean an aging population, birthing more people isn't the answer to that either.

XelaM · 21/05/2023 10:51

Definitely agree about private jets OP

dontlookbackyourenotgoingthatway · 21/05/2023 10:53

Plastic grass. Just fuck off with that shit.

Private cars over a certain weight in urban areas.

Private cars in city centres unless you've got a blue badge.

madeinmanc · 21/05/2023 10:53

@Theunamedcat Flowering plants are not a luxury

Of course not, naturally occurring in the environment. But air-freighting plastic tray after plastic tray of non-native annuals is harmful to the environment and entirely dispensable. But I expect you knew the point I was making.

TerrifiedandWorried · 21/05/2023 10:54

Laziness. Because most of the crap comes from making our lives 'easier'.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 21/05/2023 10:54

@Dutch1e and how would that work realistically? I live rurally and work in community nursing visiting a huge elderly population and I doubt that is going to change with further pushes to more hospital at home based care so will always need a car. This is the stuff that makes me switch off honestly and not want to engage

InanimateObjects · 21/05/2023 10:54

Dutch1e · 21/05/2023 10:49

Cars. Before anyone jumps on me this needs to go hand-in-hand with robust public transport especially for the disabled, and walkable/accessible communities. But cars create such huge direct & indirect damage they have to go

And mass-farmed meat. I love meat but it can't keep going like this.

Fine. Once there is a scheme in place where disabled people can call a taxi that will arrive within 10 mins and take them anywhere for the same price as the petrol would cost to drive the same distance in their mobility cars. Until then, no. Some people cannot use shared public transport even if it actually worked properly.

Private car ownership

I suspect that in 100 years time, private car ownership will seem like smoking today. Very much the exception. And our descendants won't believe we let it happen.

For 99% of human existence, the average human has never had access to anything other than their legs or a boat for travel.

As a tech nerd I think we'll end up with fleets of autonomous cabs. But in an Arthur C Clarke vein quite a few people will need to die first.

Nope. I mean that there is going to be catastrohic population collapse within decades. The ageing population is actually masking the issue to some extent.

Dammit, I was going to say that! 😆

Balloons - especially when people let them go outside. Might as well just go and asphyxiate small mammals and birds. Also, fishing line and nets, fishermen should be made to recuperate lost nets & lines. Disc Frisbees should be banned anywhere near openwater.

InanimateObjects · 21/05/2023 11:00

These sort of threads often show up how little most people research facts and data, and relative impacts of various things.

Just 100 global companies are greating iver 70% of global emissions. That might be the place to start...

I refer you to my answer 😀

We also want to improve local environments- like my city.

It's not just about global warming.

QuestionableMouse · 21/05/2023 11:03

Redebs · 21/05/2023 10:06

Massive environmental impact, but unpopular idea.

I'm fairly sure my horse had more environmental impact than my cat. But he helped to support the local economy so maybe it balances out.

I'd ban cruise ships. They're terrible for the environment.

InanimateObjects · 21/05/2023 11:03

@SerendipityJane I agree that will probably be the long-term answer to the car issue, autonomous shared fleet. Much more efficient.

Ladykryptonite · 21/05/2023 11:03

Inanimate object, a trip in a car costs more than just the petrol

StrawberriesSW1 · 21/05/2023 11:05

Charles prides himself with being green yet he refuses to provide double glazing on his properties simply for aesthetic reasons while the tenants accrue high energy bills.
During the ice age, pollution levels were low still the earth turned warmer. The UK for example is at it's lowest levels of pollution considering that most public transport buses are partly electric, we no longer have coal powered plants or use coal to heat homes etc. Yet interested parties have come with a campaign and targets to say that we have a very high level of pollutants.
Supermarkets need to close their chilled aisles and doors.

Are frisbees exceptionally bad? Or do we need to ban balls as well? Maybe they could make biodegradable frisbees.

It's not just about global warming.

Local environments are dependent on the global environment. They will be trashed regardless if the big issues aren't addressed. Deckchair arrangement on the Titanic.
