To ask for a contribution to a parking fine?

I met a friend for drinks a fortnight ago who suggested a pub I was unfamiliar with. There was a car park behind. I received a £100 demand for parking where apparently shouldn't. Admittedly I didn't look at signs but as my friend lived nearby I took their word for it.

I picked up the friend from home and drove them back too. What do you think?

I would ask your friend to go and take a photo of the signage for the car park for you, OP. Ask her to do 360 degrees so you have all the information available.

Then contact the pub and see if they will waive/write it off with the company. If it's a private company then ignore. Don't respond to any post. They never, ever send recorded so there's no way of telling whether you got the post in the first place.

I'm not surprised at the 'jesus wept' posters, they're as relentless as the parking fine 'companies' and seem to enjoy it all just as much.

Notjustabrunette · 20/05/2023 11:32

you could try and contest it with the pub if the signs were unclear. Otherwise it’s on you I’m afraid.

Drfosters · 20/05/2023 11:37

Difficult. I drove to a local pub to my friend and she was at pains to tell me to register the car. She even registered it for me when we arrived. But then she knew the fine and rules. If your friend doesn’t drive to the pub how would she know the rule exists? I am surprised the pub didn’t make it clear. At the pub I went to there was a screen as soon as we went in to pub the reg plate in.

EwwSprouts · 20/05/2023 11:40

I would just pay or contest the fine. It's for you to check for signage.

GoodChat · 20/05/2023 11:41

It's your responsibility to check the sign. Your friend owes you nothing.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 20/05/2023 11:43

Nah I’m calling reverse surely. It’s the drivers responsibility to read the signs

Fundays12 · 20/05/2023 11:44

Your responsibility your the driver. Regardless of who suggests you park somewhere as a driver you must ensure it's ok to park there first.

SunnySaturdayMorning · 20/05/2023 11:45

YABVU. You are the driver, it’s on you to read the signs.

SparkyBlue · 20/05/2023 11:45

I met a friend near her home for coffee during the week and completely forgot to put on the parking on the app. My fault. She had suggested the new coffee shop near her house ( which was fab). I think because it was so early and in a mainly residential area I didn't worry about parking but again completely my fault that I got a ticket.

Depends, were they drinking and you driving by arrangement?

Yes.

It wasn't a pay and display but it appears it was free for two hours only.

You could have checked on your mobile to see if what she said was correct.

It's not a "reverse".

So did your friend say that it was free parking?

Zenana · 20/05/2023 11:49

Pugdogmom · 20/05/2023 10:49

I wouldn't ask your friend, as its your responsibility to check.
Saying that, my daughter parked at car park which let you have so long free. We overstayed because the event didn't start till later than scheduled so we were late back. I transferred her half the fine, because I enjoyed the event too, abd she offered to drive. She didn't ask or expect it as she was the driver, but I had her bank details and did it anyway. I wouldn't have asked her for money either if I had been driving , as wasn't expected.

That's the same as this situation.

WaltzingWaters · 20/05/2023 11:53

I think it depends if your friend specifically said “it’s free parking here, I’m 100% sure of it”. In that case I’d mention it in a “hey, just so you know, that car park isn’t free, I got a £100 fine”. She should then offer something towards it. If she doesn’t, no more lifts for her.

But ultimately, always best to check. I usually double check free parking spots anyway just in case it’s suddenly changed.

Nothingisblackandwhite · 20/05/2023 11:55

Sorry but it’s 100% your responsibility here . Pay and learn from it

starfishmummy · 20/05/2023 11:55

As the driver it was ultimately your responsibility to check; but I imagine if a friend said it was a place that you could park then I'm sure most of us would just park there.

Ladykryptonite · 20/05/2023 11:56

Get the bus next time, or cycle

SoupDragon · 20/05/2023 11:56

I do think you should point out to the friend that it was free for 2 hours only and that you've been hit with a £100 fine.

If I was the friend and had told you to park there, I would offer to pay half. Any decent person would if they had been the one telling someone to park there.

arethereanyleftatall · 20/05/2023 12:02

Wow!! There are a lot of not very good friends on here.
If I had a friend who had given me a lift, I would have had my hand in my purse as she pulled in to the car park ready to check for payment required and would absolutely be paying the car park from the outset, given that she's been kind enough to drive.

There are some absolutely cheeky fuckers on this thread.

Tell her op. See what she offers. If she doesn't offer at least half, there's a simple solution, don't drive her any where again.

KarmaStar · 20/05/2023 12:05

I can't believe you didn't check before leaving your car somewhere you've not parked at before!
If course this is on you and cheeky of you to ask for money for your error.

It was free parking for 2 hours. There was nothing to pay when they parked.

meganorks · 20/05/2023 12:11

Well it's your responsibility to look for the parking signs so I'd say YABU. Was it the pub car park? Some places make you register your number plate. I almost made this mistake once. Parked in a pub car park and went in the pub and ate. I had to go back as i had left something and then noticed a sign saying I needed to put my number plate in at the bar.

CindersAgain · 20/05/2023 12:12

I’ve been your friend and I paid the ticket.
