Have my taste buds changed? But all tinned soup tastes absolutely awful these days...not even Heinz tomato soup cuts it any more 😭

I have tried the fancy ones often recommended here, bit blergh they're not nice

Maybe I'm just getting old ha ha

Tinned soup has always been shite. They all have an underlying tinned soup taste.

Ibizafun · 30/01/2024 20:45

Surely it was always disgusting?

justasking111 · 30/01/2024 20:53

Asda own brand tomato soup is nicer than Heinz

Elephantsareace · 30/01/2024 20:55

They have a horrible gloopy gluey texture now.

Waitrose basics Tom soup is still quite nice.

DinnaeFashYersel · 30/01/2024 20:55

Most are disgusting to adult taste buds but kids love em.

Namedand · 30/01/2024 20:57

I took a fancy for Heinz tomato soup yesterday. I haven’t bought it for a couple of years and was gobsmacked to see it’s £1.70 a tin. I didn’t buy it. For an occasional quick lunch I like tesco own brand cream of chicken and mushroom. I add a shake of white pepper to it. 67p a tin. Mostly I stick to the family favourite which is a large pot of lentil and ham soup. Freezes well in portions to use later.

Mumaway · 30/01/2024 20:59

I agree, I think it's since they took nice things like sugar and salt out and added fake chemical shit.
I love heinz tomato soup normally, but actually M&S own brand is much nicer, and cheaper!

MysteriousInspector · 30/01/2024 21:02

There's a kind of sliminess to soup these days - even "fresh" ones in those plastic containers. I suspect this is due to whatever it is they use to thicken it these days.

HappyDaze23 · 30/01/2024 21:04

Tinned soup has always been rank. Heinz tomato and Cream of Chicken I have some vague nostalgia for but the texture was always weird. We were brought up on the stuff. We used to share a tin between 4 - 3 kids and one adult. Plus a slice of 9p white sliced Safeways own brand bread.

Acatdance · 30/01/2024 21:06

Cold mushroom soup straight from the tin is my go-to hangover cure.

GetWhatYouWant · 30/01/2024 21:09

Once you start making your own soup the tinned ones taste so awful. I make stock from the chicken carcass after having roast chicken, otherwise use marigold vegetable bouillon powder for stock. Mary Berry has a really good easy recipe for cream of tomato soup which takes 10 minutes to cook.

Badbudgeter · 30/01/2024 21:10

I used to really like campbells condensed lentil soup. It disappeared ages ago. Aldi finest some sort bean with chilli of possibly paprika is nice but not very memorable. Under a quid a can though.

Oh how do you keep it down? I can't understand this one haha.

Mind you I can't talk as tomato flavour cuppa soup (not even tinned) is my go to when recovering from illness. I think it's mostly salt.

Dartmoorcheffy · 30/01/2024 21:11

I add salt and pepper to any tinned soup. I love heinz scotch broth, but these days it is so bland.

Even worse yesterday I saw walkers ready salted crisps.. now with 45% less salt ... seriously!!!

Half ready salted, put the other half on yourself like in the olden days. They probably don't provide the little sachet though.

ChChChCheckinItOut · 30/01/2024 21:15

I feel like this about supermarket pasta sauces as well - the tomato and mascarpone one that is in the fridge section with the tortellini. It used to be lovely and creamy and now it’s like watered down bean sauce. I add mascarpone to try and make it edible.

cheeseychops · 30/01/2024 21:24

I can't stand all the crappy tasteless excuse for rip of tins of soup these days. Can only eat M&S mushroom or tomato soup or Tideford soups. Make my own every time

DiscoBeat · 30/01/2024 21:36

I've never liked tinned soup. Tin flavour! I just make it with whatever I've got - very easy.

Londonrach1 · 30/01/2024 21:42

As someone who loves tinned tomatoe soup...I could have cried at the weekend..we no food in and just one tin of soup...I couldn't wait for it to eat up ..it was so bad I couldn't eat it and used to be my favourite. Think recipe change. I'm not pregnant...I wish but not possible due to age.

Hummusandstuff · 30/01/2024 21:42

I’ve always hated tinned soup. So depressing. Tastes like Sunday afternoon in the 1970s. All tinny and boiled vegetably.

Soup is so easy to make and freeze.

SweetFemaleAttitude · 30/01/2024 21:43

Baxter's french onion is nice

Caswallonthefox · 30/01/2024 22:19

I have found that bachelors cuppa soup doesn't taste the same. They've reduced the salt content, I understand why but it's ruined them for me.
As for tomato soup, nope. Any other soup except oxtail and weird flavours, are my go to.

artycow · 31/01/2024 11:03

Any brand of soup is ALWAYS better than disgusting AMERICAN Heinz SOUP, or should I say AMERICAN SHIT!!!!!
