Have my taste buds changed? But all tinned soup tastes absolutely awful these days...not even Heinz tomato soup cuts it any more 😭

I have tried the fancy ones often recommended here, bit blergh they're not nice

Maybe I'm just getting old ha ha

I make my own vegan version of heinz tomato soup, so easy and yummy!

Saute chopped onion and garlic (I like loads!). Add 1 or two tins of tomatoes and stock powder or cube, pinch of sugar, salt and pepper, maybe some mixed herbs or thyme. While that is simmering soak cashew nuts in hot water to soften. After simmering for a bit chuck the soup and the cashew nuts in a high powered blender. The cashew nuts give a delicious creaminess. You have to use a great blender though to get them all creamy and blended properly. Yum. I also like to add a lot of garlic powder, but not everyone may agree.

It's also ridiculously expensive! £1.70 for a tin of Heinz- Tesco have an offer on 4 for £5 but that's still £1.25 a can!
I like the mushroom soup which I always add salt to. The vegetable is horrid!

When I can be bothered I make my own- favourite recipe is a spicy parsnip and carrot. Very easy and absolutely delicious. Just veg- no cream needed.

Agree that homemade tomato is acidic- always gives me indigestion!

SilentParrot · 19/05/2023 21:19

Heinz tomato soup was the only tinned soup I could ever eat, because its flavour was supposed to be that uniquely sweet Heinz flavour, rather than an actual tomato soup.

I'm annoyed at Baxters .. they used to do a posh mushroom one and I can't find it anywhere now.

Similarly I was annoyed when Covent Garden stopped doing Wild Mushroom soup, their Mushroom soup now is awful.

Oysterbabe · 19/05/2023 21:48

I adore any old cheap shit cream of tomato and don't care how classless that makes me.

They have replaced suger with sweetener "to be healthier" sweetener makes me ill small amounts of suger (and it really only needs to be small) does not they also increased the salt contents and now they are dropping it people complain because they are used to the extra I don't really use salt at home so that side doesn't effect me

Which ones have sweeteners? I've looked at ingredients on the Tesco app and neither Heinz nor Tesco tomato soup show any.

I really like heinze cup a soups. You can make them as thick as you want

WoollyRosebud · 19/05/2023 22:06

Home made soup is awesome and so cheap and easy to do. Good way to use up all the old vegetables lurking at the bottom of the fridge.

Having said that I had a tin of Sainsburys tomato and three bean soup for dinner tonight (a whole tin, I know I’m a glutton) and it was rather nice. Quite spicy and just right on a cold evening

I mourn Covent gardens lentil and bacon. They changed years ago and I’ve never forgiven them.

Hairbrushhandle · 19/05/2023 22:23

Fresh soups are my go to now. Yorkshire provinder ones are lovely. Found in the fridge aisle.

Crikeyalmighty · 19/05/2023 22:25

I like the carton M&S chicken one with rice in it

Findyourneutralspace · 19/05/2023 22:27

It’s nearly two quid a tin now too!!

OoohLaLaLa · 19/05/2023 22:29

M&S tinned soups are still good.

James Martin says chefs use a lot of butter and cream which is why their food tastes good. Try this recipe or just bung salted butter into your tinned soup to taste. I'm addicted to basil always keep a plant on the windowsill

I eat tinned soup for lunch most days 😁

My favourites are:

Morrisons chorizo and butterbean
Aldi tomato & chorizo
Asda mexican chicken & bean
Heinz chicken & mushroom

Agree Heinz tomato isn't the same anymore, although I still enjoy it with black pepper and lumps of cheddar added..

I genuinely enjoy all of these and find them so comforting and satisfying!

5foot5 · 19/05/2023 22:40

I have a soup maker. Left over veg goes in with stock from a cube and 21 minutes later, lots of lovely soup.

I can usually get at least 4 portions from one batch so I freeze it in individual servings.

Better than anything you buy.

After a roast chicken I save the left over meat, cook the carcass in the pressure cooker to make stock, then use these and some veg to make a really lovely chicken soup

Fiddlededeefiddlededoh · 19/05/2023 22:41

Get a soup maker and you can even use frozen veg. So quick as easy and soup maker is even self cleaning. Best purchase. I use it for sauces to put into curries and Shepards pie and lasagne as well to fill them out.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 19/05/2023 23:10

Add salt if you want to. It's good that people now have the choice.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 19/05/2023 23:12

What do you mean, 'now'?

Tinned soup has always been rank, especially Heinz.

SusannaQ · 19/05/2023 23:18

Heinz tomato soup used to be my comfort food of I was under the weather, with a slice of hot buttered toast. I've eaten it for as long as I can remember. But all of a sudden it's become disgustingly sweet, I thought the idea was to reduce sugars these days. I can't eat it anymore, someone suggested M&S's version, but that's as bad.

Tessisme · 19/05/2023 23:19

Save £££££££'s. Just add a sprinkle of salt to wallpaper paste.

Murdoch1949 · 20/05/2023 18:13

Enjoy tomato soup, after seasoning, for a quick lunch. Use chicken soup to pump up chicken stew for a pie or risotto.
