Have my taste buds changed? But all tinned soup tastes absolutely awful these days...not even Heinz tomato soup cuts it any more 😭

I have tried the fancy ones often recommended here, bit blergh they're not nice

Maybe I'm just getting old ha ha

Yeah, tinned soups aren’t worth buying anymore. Although asdas own brand tomato is reminiscent of the old Heinz (not the smart price one!)

My absolute favourites are Yorkshire provender roast chicken or Sainsbury’s taste the difference petite pois and Wiltshire ham. Just delicious 🤤
Chilled ones, not tin

They have replaced suger with sweetener "to be healthier" sweetener makes me ill small amounts of suger (and it really only needs to be small) does not they also increased the salt contents and now they are dropping it people complain because they are used to the extra I don't really use salt at home so that side doesn't effect me

Nononotorious · 19/05/2023 20:27

It's sweeteners! I totally agree.

Sweeteners ruin everything they're in.

isthisit83 · 19/05/2023 20:27

TERRIBLE. I bought some not that long ago for quick lunch/emergencies and I couldn't believe I used to eat tinned soup relatively regularly in my younger days. So it's not always been this bad?

Darhon · 19/05/2023 20:28

I’m not fussy and though I can eat it, I’ve never like tinned soup other than Heinz tomato. Which let’s face it is just a processed taste really!

RoseBucket · 19/05/2023 20:28

Yep! I add garlic croutons and grated cheese to shimmy a tinned soup up now, I’m on my own most of the time so it’s still a quick dinner for me when I can’t be arsed (which is a lot)

MicrowaveRice · 19/05/2023 20:30

I'm annoyed at Baxters .. they used to do a posh mushroom one and I can't find it anywhere now.

Xmasbaby11 · 19/05/2023 20:31

I rarely have tinned soup now and am disgusted by the taste - bland and artificial. I do remember loving the Heinz ones when I was younger.

but I’m used to homemade or fresh so not sure if the soup has changed or my taste.

Mostar · 19/05/2023 20:32

Tinned soup can fuck right off. Homemade or nothing, and whoever invented cup-a-soup deserves to be boiled in yellowy E-numbers and noodles for the rest of eternity.

Lasouthpaw · 19/05/2023 20:33

I like the M and S cream of chicken. And Baxters Cream of Asparagus.

With thick, fresh bakery bread...mmmm

Can’t beat tinned for tomato though. Fresh tomato soup just tastes like a big acidy bowl of chopped tomatoes. I can’t do it.

But yeah most tinned soup is grim. When they hold the form of the …. boke.

Best tomato soup I ever did was olive oil, softened onion, salt, pepper, a box of passata, chicken stock cube and the magic ingredient of about a 1/3 of a teaspoon of tamarind paste melted in a little hot water. It gave the right texture, sourness, sweetness and, most importantly, saltiness, just like Heinz tomato used to be. The bland stuff they sell now is just about palatable when accompanied by a big pinch of chilli flakes, one of sea salt, pepper and at least one ham and mozzarella toastie to try and counteract the overwhelming sweetness.

Bananaramram · 19/05/2023 20:33

I eat tinned soup for dinner most nights in the winter as I don’t get home till late and always add my own spices, especially garlic. I need to get better about homemade soup but I find a bit of additional spices makes all the difference and tinned soup is so cheap! But now it’s spring so salads replace soup…

Gingersay · 19/05/2023 20:40

As a kid I lived on Heinz tomato/chicken/mushroom soup, I would never buy tins of soup now they taste tinny!! I actually realised a few weeks ago when my dad offered my 13 year old a tin of soup that neither of my kids have ever had soup out a tin I always make my own - kids these day don't know their living 😆

Baxter’s French Onion soup. It’s OK. Add a thick slice of cheese on toasted baguette and it’s quite nice. Good for a store cupboard item anyway.

I’ve been obsessed with making my own French onion soup for the past few months - used to have the Baxter’s but would have to add bits to it, to add flavour, so thought I may as well just make it from scratch. It’s so quick and easy. Funny on the tummy though 😂.

UrsulaBelle · 19/05/2023 20:58

Care to share your recipe, @Blabla81 ? 😘

It's a fine line between onion soup and onion gravy I find 🤣

Still love my tinned soup. Baxter's cock-a-leekie (no jokes at the back, please) - here's looking at you, kid! 😍

The only one I've got right off is Heinz Oxtail. I was absolutely addicted to that as a teenager. Could have eaten it morning, noon and night and frequently did.

I remember when you could buy a tin of Sainsbo (or Safeway?) own brand for 17p. Themz were the dayz.

augustusglupe · 19/05/2023 21:00

I like M&S Tomato soup and their Pea & Mint. Nicer than Heinz.

00100001 · 19/05/2023 21:04

I refuse to be drawn in and buy these recommendations... Past experience tells me I'll be crying into my tea and then I'll have a hot salty watery mess to dunk my bread in Grin

Batters were the last resort of okayish. Then they went gluten free.

I've given up. Home made all the way.

Songbird54321 · 19/05/2023 21:09

I agree, cannot eat tinned soup anymore and I used to have it regularly for lunch at work.
Now I buy the fresh soup in cartons, covent garden type. Even then I find myself adding salt and pepper more than I used to, and I don't really like the taste of salt.
No-one needs this kind of change in their lives

Ifailed · 19/05/2023 21:10

Oxtail soup is shit now, you'll be lucky to find any sort of meat in it now.

PurelyBelter · 19/05/2023 21:11

I’ve never liked a lot of tinned soup, except for Heinz Tomato Soup. But I haven’t had that in a while as it’s so bloody expensive now.

My mam used to give me Heinz Chicken Soup when I was younger, I hated it. The consistency was so goopy and gelatinous, and the slimy chunks of chicken. Boak. Hate the stuff 🤮
