To wash my perm?

Plipplopdrop · 18/05/2023 14:11

Hair permed 2 hours ago and I've caught sight of myself in the mirror.... And I look disturbingly like Tracey Beaker (or perhaps her Mum)

WIBU to attempt to loosen the look by washing it before the recommended time (48 hours) in order to... Tame the situation?

Are perms back in fashion?
I used to have a love / hate relationship with perms in the 70s.
The reality of tight frizz never coincided with the fantasy image of soft gentle curls. We were never told not to wash it for 48 hours. I doubt it will make much difference. TBH if the hairdresser can only manage the Tracy beaker look then you probably won't do much better yourself.

I'm the least fashionable person so not qualified to answer but my hairdresser seemed to think they are.
I opted for one as I have naturally curly hair but it drops throughout the day, so the idea was to liven it up. Which I guess has been achieved.

Hairdresser was great, I'm just getting cold feet

No don't wash it. I'm not a hairdresser but I've had many perms over the years. You don't always like the way it's been styled but you will find that your perm will drop, you've only just had it done so leave it be. The risk of washing too soon is that it will deactivate the perm. 9ne you've waited a few days, washed it then you can style it the way you want to. You always have to mess about with perms to find how you want it to sit, at least I did.

Have you not seen Legally Blonde?

Anyotherdude · 18/05/2023 15:10

Good grief, no! Have you never seen Legally Blonde?

JulieHoney · 18/05/2023 15:11

Elle is your go-to authority here. No, you can’t wash your perm.

Anyotherdude · 18/05/2023 15:14

Oh sorry @SandLResources, for some reason your comment wasn’t visible to me until after I posted a similar remark!

blackberriesaretheonlyfruit · 18/05/2023 15:14

You'll make it worse! The frizz will be unbelievable.

Mine looked terrible but still wait 72 hours before washing. It's a bad stage the first few days but worth it. I had mine down last Thursday and i love it now.

Must be back in my hairdresser was doing 3 last Thursday alone.

what about the risk of deactivating the immonium thygocolate (and implicating yourself in the murder of your father)?

Oh god

WillowKnicks · 18/05/2023 15:19

No don't wash it too soon, you'll probably find it drops after the first time you wash it anyway.

Choupett · 18/05/2023 15:19

Photo please.

5128gap · 18/05/2023 15:23

No. Leave it be. The first two/three weeks before the drop have little resemblance to the finished look. The rule of perms is if you like it at first you'll be disappointed later on as it will look nothing like that when it settles.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 18/05/2023 15:23

I wouldn’t wash it. It can do unexpected things to the curl… relax some parts but not others.

Just hang in there it will look odd and crazy for the first few days but will settle down. In the meantime start looking for good curl products (Aveda is what I use) and a good diffuser

😂😂😂

RedHinge · 18/05/2023 16:06

Oh I want one now. I have the straightest hair in the world. My 1970s perms were wild but never lasted long. Four years ago I had chemo and when my hair grew back curly it was the best it's ever been. The curls only lasted a few months tho.

Damn you. I came to type this 🤣

Plipplopdrop · 18/05/2023 17:32

Ok, i'll grit my teeth and bare it
My own hair has much larger curls (but a very annoying flat section at the back - thus the perm) and yes my gripe has been solved (as I now do have a very uniform set of curls now), the clown-esque look isn't my best vibe.
I'll get into hats for a bit

How is it now @Plipplopdrop ? Because I have just had mine done and it is...not good.

BreezyRoseScroller · 15/03/2025 11:25

So if I get my hair permed on Thursday, can I wash it Saturday or do I wash it Sunday?
