Voluntary Work

Carried over from a full thread…

“ToK1

@Walkaround

Amd yet stats show people who work are more likely to volunteer than those who don't”

@Tok1 - where do you get that statistic from? Information I have seen suggests most volunteers are retirement age, mostly women and in 20-30 somethings, more commonly those who do not work, “because they have more time to spare.”

Ah, sorry I've done another thread as well.

It was stats on volunteering

Unemployed people were less likely to

Walkaround · 17/05/2023 21:51

@Tok1 - you are confusing not working and unemployed - they do not mean the same thing.

@Walkaround

I cant find the article I saw.

It was about the impact of volunteering on job prospects.

Walkaround · 17/05/2023 22:10

So, an article advocating volunteering for the least likely reason people claim to be doing it for?

OP posts:
Walkaround · 17/05/2023 22:29

The article doesn’t say more employed people volunteer than non-working people, though.

ToK1 · 17/05/2023 22:33

I didnt say it did. That was just an example of the many articles about the impact of volunteering on job prospects

I told you I can't find it, it was a while ago I saw it.

Not sure if it was during covid.

Ime of volunteering there are 3 main motivators:
Experience to move into paid work which applies mainly to recent graduates who find their degree needs supporting with on the job experience, or women returners who want to unskill and build confidence
Genuine high commitment to the cause. So all walks of life including very busy people squeezing it in around full time jobs.
Something useful to do/giving back after retirement or because you're not economically active.
Numbers fall when unemployment figures are low for obvious reasons.
