Genuinely interested in people's opinions on this. Should dogs be on leads in public places?
Yes =yanbu

If they can behave, off is totally fine. Mine thinks every single person he sees is his long lost best buddy and tries to flatten them (he's 35k). So he stays on lead around whole and off over the fields.

this incident makes me wonder if dog owners have started carrying weapons in order to attack those who complain when the dog has attacked or harassed them?
It fits in with the typical attitude of dog owners.

so You think all dog owners are potential
murderers. You need to seek help you really do!

They are deranged if they do that. Not all dog owner's carry knives.

I've seen discussions on here where mums are wondering if they should have some sort of weapon to protect their children from bull breeds in their local area.
We know there is a problem of smaller dogs being attacked by bull breeds, it seems plausible that dog owners now feel they need some protection.

faffadoodledo · 19/05/2023 18:33

Not in my dog owning universe @Thesharkradar !! I was staggered by @Sartre 'a story. Still waiting to see if she reported it.

SquirrelFeed · 19/05/2023 18:34

I’m pretty sure the pp who mentioned daggers meant throwing daggers as in dirty looks. Ffs, are you lot ok?!

She said "pulled a dagger on me" which is very odd phrasing if she meant a dirty look. A dirty look would also be odd in context, since it was clearly given as an example of an extreme response from the dog owner.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 19/05/2023 20:11

Well my dog has to be lead or she'd be off no 2 ways about it.

Yes officer they pulled a sausage on me .. It was frightening .😁

Kokopenny · 19/05/2023 20:35

A dagger ! Are we in the 16th century ?

Aspargustips · 19/05/2023 20:36

My dog’s well-being is my well-being. Sharing walks with them and seeing the joy they have at running is an incredible, powerful experience for me. I care about them deeply and wouldn’t consider tempering that joy because some kid is scared of being in their vicinity. I know my dog isn’t interested in your kid and would run straight past. Your kid’s emotional well-being is for you to manage, not me. If being within 2 feet of a dog on a woodland path is too scary for him, why on earth are you taking him to places like that? You must realise that you are the one putting him in positions he’s not comfortable in, surely? If you want to keep him separated from dogs, use your own garden or stick to the multiple places dogs aren’t allowed. Animal haters don’t have a monopoly on green spaces anymore than dog owner do.

What a shame that you have such a view. Says a lot about the entitled nature of so many people. Wouldn't it be nice if everyone spared a thought for all different types of people and all types of animals in the different situations and appreciated that no two situations are the same and require the same behaviour and reaction.

There is nothing entitled about my view. Do you really expect people not to walk their dogs in a wood in case they might happen upon a person who is too scared to be within a few feet of a dog? How ridiculous. If your child hates dogs, don’t put them in situations where they might be in close proximity with dogs.

Bingbangbongbash · 19/05/2023 20:56

Vikingthings · 19/05/2023 09:51

As for the aggressive poster with the aggressive dog - your dog is the problem here, not the other one. You should move to a safe space or you should decide not take your dog in public. Why should someone else change their behaviour to accommodate your dog’s foibles? If all dogs have to be on leads everywhere, I think all reactive dogs should be destroyed. Never being allowed to run would be akin to death to my dog, so it’s only fair.

Just don't let your dog run up to on lead dogs then?

The cheek of calling other people entitled. Why shouldn't the pp take their under control dog out in public, because of out of control dogs running up to them?

Read the thread. This poster was complaining because someone was throwing a ball for their dog too close to the poster’s reactive dog. Apparently they should have moved away because the reactive dog didn’t like it. What a load of nonsense

Purplefoalfoot · 19/05/2023 20:57

I walk my dog in a forest, do you all think he should be on the lead the whole time? How will he get any exercise? He has good recall, lives with two preschoolers and two babies and has never jumped on a child. Why can’t he run on the beach/ in the forest?

I wouldn’t have a dog if I couldn’t excercise them off lead as I think it’s cruel.

Exactly 🤭 The posters responding as if a dog owner was about to attack someone with a dagger are probably the same posters who come on to complain a dog attacking their child - no bite marks, no injury, no anything. Just a case of them seeing a dog off lead and the parent having a hissy fit, scaring the child and both having hysterics 🙄

I thought it was only me who realised no one was threatening anyone with a dagger. A dagger! 🤣
Someone has, in all seriousness, said that they think dog owners could now be carrying weapons as that seems to be the typical attitude of dog owners. I can’t take any of them seriously. I asked on a previous thread what i, as a responsible dog owner, could do to make people feel safer and was told to put my dog to sleep. I can’t be bothered to try now.

Mmm… That sounds like a typical dog hater response. Sad 😞

The very first post I saw on here, a while ago now, was a poster asking what she could do as her baby had been “attacked” by a “huge” dog. The first three pages of replies were “OMG! Hope your baby is ok”

It turns out this “attack” by a huge dog was a dog was trotting in front of its owner, saw OP and her baby, stopped and looked at them. That’s it! No attack took place.

That’s when I realised that MN is a very strange planet 🤭

wildinthecountry · 20/05/2023 01:13

MN is a very strange place , have you ever taken a brand new puppy out for the first time ? You are absolutely swamped by people wanting to say Hi! to the lovely puppy but ,bet you could spot the MN'ter a mile of their feet would be twitching .😂

Kokopenny · 20/05/2023 07:18

The MNer would be complaining about the ‘vicious panting’ of the pup

wildinthecountry · 20/05/2023 07:22

Oh yeah I forgot about the vicious panting🤣 ,I'm trying to remember who said that now 🤔.

JMSA · 20/05/2023 08:08

I don't trust my dog 100%, as his recall can be patchy. He is of an entitled breed, and people pleasing isn't always part of the agenda Grin
I keep him on the lead.

Never leave the house then? Because dogs are everywhere. Yes, you are entitled. And ableist.
