Blinds no curtains?!

Upallnightfeeding · 15/05/2023 17:03

Am I being unreasonable to think curtains are old fashioned?

We have blinds and good double glazing. I prefer the look of no curtains. Am I being crazy or is this perfectly normal?

This is lighthearted so please 😂

Oh and may I add we have large windows so the cost of curtains would be more than £500… which I think is the main off putting reason

I haven't got any curtains in my house, just blinds. I think it looks much neater than curtains.

TabithaTitanium · 15/05/2023 17:08

I prefer the cosy look of curtains with blinds but yes for a more modern, clean look blinds on their own look great.

DappledThings · 15/05/2023 17:08

I think all blinds look cold (as in not welcoming cold, not actual temperature) and make any room look functional rather than cosy.

Only rooms I will accept blinds and no curtains in my house are bathrooms and the study.

Sissynova · 15/05/2023 17:08

I don’t agree. There are old fashioned curtains and there are modern curtains.

The curtains in my living room are a lovely light soft taupe textured weave, with thick black out lining but they are a wave style that is on a recessed ceiling fixing. Very simple and non fussy but bring a softness that blinds do not.
Although they were not cheap.

Bax765 · 15/05/2023 17:10

We have curtains in the bedrooms and living room (feels cosier!) and blinds elsewhere.

Abra1t · 15/05/2023 17:12

We mainly have Roman blinds with thermal linings. They are neater pulled up during the day but help insulate at night.

GasPanic · 15/05/2023 17:18

Blinds are better because if you can't be arsed to open them every day you can just leave them half open.

Tinkerbyebye · 15/05/2023 17:20

Curtains all the way. Blinds cut out light, even if open, and in my opinion make a room look bare and uninteresting. Curtains add a cosy feel

Azealeasinbloom · 15/05/2023 17:21

Due to allergies we have blinds only in our loft-style bedrooms , and I only put curtains in the lounge and the snug.
It can be echo-y ( wooden floors), but I find them easy to keep clean and I like the minimalism

MrsPatrickDempsey · 15/05/2023 17:25

I agree OP - shutters for me.

CatsOnTheChair · 15/05/2023 17:50

It's your house. Put in what you want.
Personally, I like curtains. But even if I were to buy your curtain free house in the future, they aren't exactly hard to add in afterwards.

3peassuit · 15/05/2023 17:54

I have blinds with interlined curtains because my house is freezing. If I lived in a modern house, I’d just have blinds.

Lillyrosemay · 15/05/2023 17:54

I also dislike curtains, I have blinds and shutters throughout the house, blinds in different materials ie silk, velvet, wood and also wooden shutters, as long as you have something it’s all good.

MidnightMeltdown · 15/05/2023 18:24

Curtains for me. I like the different textures and patterns and think they look for artistic. Blinds are boring and clinical and remind me of new builds.

MrsDoylesDoily · 15/05/2023 18:30

I swapped my blinds back for curtains because I missed them.

Also, I don't really like the look of blinds from the outside of a house as it tends to remind me of Drs/Dentist surgeries.

ididntknowthat11 · 15/05/2023 20:14

I love curtains, but sometimes just blinds is best, depending on the room.

My old house (Georgian) was all curtains.

Current house (70s built) is mostly blinds due to radiator and furniture placement and the fact curtains would just be too fussy.

But if a room can handle curtains, I love them.

Dwightlovesmichael · 15/05/2023 20:25

I have these on the front windows of my house (two upstairs bedrooms, living room, downstairs bedroom).

Back of the house are kitchen windows and bathroom which are roller blinds.

dds room at the back and a patio door have the only curtains. Will change dds room to the wooden blinds when we decorate it.

It’s a 1940s semi and it suits it, we have lots of teak, mid century furniture.

I prefer the look of curtains and they feel cosier in winter.

wildfirewonder · 15/05/2023 20:28

I think they both have a place!

VerbenaGirl · 15/05/2023 20:30

We have all blinds and a couple of my good friends just can’t fathom it - as they love how cosy their curtains make them feel. I just find curtains a bit oppressive, and blinds much sleeker.

Ahsoka2001 · 15/05/2023 20:32

Not at all! Personal preferences when it comes to home decor can vary greatly, and there is no right or wrong answer. Some people prefer the look of curtains as they can add a touch of elegance or warmth to a room, while others prefer the clean and minimalistic look of blinds or no window coverings at all.

It's perfectly normal to have a preference for a specific style and to find curtains old-fashioned or unnecessary for your taste. As long as you have adequate privacy and light control with your blinds and double glazing, there's no reason why you can't enjoy the look of unobstructed windows.

Ultimately, the choice of window coverings comes down to personal preference and what fits your desired aesthetic and functional needs. As long as you're happy with the look and feel of your home, there's no need to worry about whether your preference is considered "normal" or not. Enjoy creating a space that reflects your personal style and makes you feel comfortable.

This has been and interesting read, thank you all. I really just was interested in opinions as it’s something I’ve never really thought of before! And it really does depend on the room/ house/ style I suppose. Will stick with the blinds for now but can always change my mind later down the road if I feel curtains are needed. I’ve never heard of thermal Roman blinds though, that is interesting! I might have a look!

Surely if you can be arsed to half open them you can spend a full 2 seconds to fully open them. What a strange comment.

Badleg85 · 16/05/2023 15:11

I don't like curtains, they usually look shit from either the outside or the inside. We've got blinds only and they're lovely, ours are ithin the window but too so no big poles on the walls. Much neater
