I work in an office, several other departments. Our manager is trying to get us to work more closely with one of the other departments, which I appreciate, as we do similar support roles. But he said we should do something nice for them and the person that they feel has done the nicest thing will get a prize! Now I'm not sure what he has in mind really, but he's probably assuming we have money to spare to do this sort of thing. I'm all for sharing information with other departments where needed and building a good relationship, but this feels as if we're competing to see who's the biggest suck up!

Please give a talk to some of my former bosses too!

🤣🤣🤣
im lucky that I was trained on how to manage people by excellent bosses, by a company that knew how to train management well and set clear guidelines and policies on how to actually manage people properly
yep, we had plonkers too. And some bullies. But generally they got found out and mashed pretty quickly 🤣🤣😉

"Great idea boss, let me know how much petty cash the company is provided for this and I'm sure we can come up with something within that budget."

This rubs me up the wrong way for sure.
Is he generally a nice guy?

Get whoever does the stationery order to get a box of mixed biscuits in individual packets and pass them around at random intervals, especially during times when they've been under the cosh a bit.

It's an easy enough solution for very little company money.

There's also starting a treat day where everybody's name gets put into a pretty box photocopier paper box with some pink paper stapled around it and two people get their name drawn out for a Kit-Kat/Gluten free Kit-Kat substitute also bought with company funds.

A free set of red, blue and black biros per person always goes down well, too.

I find it interesting that you were told "do something nice" and you've interpreted it as "buy something nice". The person upthread who suggested a thank you board is closer to the mark than you are, to be honest.

Where has she said that?
Thank you board costs money, and if you want to make it pretty you might also need money depending on what the office has lying around...
Things like a coffee session, etc all also cost money.

The boss' wording is unprofessional. If you're a mind reader good for you
