To think I should have been told this invalidated my Apple warranty before it was repaired?

DS broke his iPad screen. Went to a phone repair shop round the corner who said they’d replace it for £85. They have no warnings or stipulated any conditions.

I said that’s fine. iPad is six months old so I didn’t want it to be broken for long.

Went to pick it up today and he revealed that because he was a third party repairing the iPad that I couldn’t use the Touch ID because Apple don’t like you going to places that aren’t them.

I wasn’t very happy and said I wish he’d told me but it’s too late now.

Anyway I found out it invalidates the warrant which has 18 months left on it! And now the home button is playing up and I can’t download any apps it says ‘payment incomplete’ doesn’t even show a ‘download’ button.

AIBU to think I should have been told BEFORE the repair that it would mean I couldn’t use Touch ID? I’m really annoyed the iPad cost a fortune and now if it breaks they won’t touch it at Apple.

to be fair I thought I was common knowledge that if you use a third party repair company it invlidates warranties

TeaKitten · 13/05/2023 23:04

It’s your responsibility to check about your warranty, not the shops. Not sure about the Touch ID though, did he no for sure it wouldn’t work before he did the repair? Why didn’t you just take it to apple anyway?

MuffinToSeeHere · 13/05/2023 23:09

I thought that was fairly standard knowledge to be fair so it's not surprising he didn't think it needed to be mentioned. I'm surprised you didn't take it to an apple store to begin with.

TheSnowyOwl · 13/05/2023 23:09

I also thought it was common knowledge about the warranty. Buyer beware and all that; it’s your responsibility. It’s worth getting insurance or adding to the house insurance if you get a new iPad and are under warranty.

Papernotplastic · 13/05/2023 23:10

I thought it was common knowledge too. Going for the (much cheaper) non Apple repair invalidates any warranty.

ViaRia01 · 13/05/2023 23:11

Agree it would have been ideal if the repair shop spelled this out for you.
However, I expect that the accidental damage that led to the broken screen would have in fact already voided your warranty before you even entered the repair shop.

ie, if the ipad was dropped and the screen broke, that same accident may also have caused internal damage so any future decide failure would be considered accidental damage and so not covered by the warranty.

LookOutBandits · 13/05/2023 23:12

YABU. It's not up to the repair shop to tell you that your warranty with someone else is invalidated.

It's pretty standard that if you change something using a different company then the warranty is not going to stand.

Papernotplastic · 13/05/2023 23:13

No. Apple would have repaired the screen but they’d have charged 4x the price.

QuillBill · 13/05/2023 23:15

I agree, once it's been dropped then then it wouldn't be in warranty anyway. Unless you have AppleCare.

Papernotplastic · 13/05/2023 23:16

I don’t think dropping it or cracking the screen voids the warranty.

Beneficialchampion2 · 13/05/2023 23:18

Claim on home insurance? It'll be an expensive lesson either way...

Apple will repair but doubt they will honour your warranty

jimmyhill · 13/05/2023 23:21

I had a Samsung phone and had the screen replaced by an independent shop. The fingerprint reader stopped working. I did a factory restore of the phone and it started working again. maybe try backing up and then factory restoring the iPad.

Papernotplastic · 13/05/2023 23:23

A decent case can make the difference. I had two smashed screens, one quite soon after the other, in the past because the Apple cases came loose when the iPad was dropped. I swapped to a Targus case and it’s never happened since.

RainBow725 · 13/05/2023 23:24

I think losing the home button is a common issue when the screen is broken or replaced - I've had it happen on a phone. You can have home button on the screen by switching on Assisted Touch.

Papernotplastic · 13/05/2023 23:24

JimmyHill is right. If you follow the instructions on the apple website you should be able to reset it.

HabitatRat · 13/05/2023 23:29

I don't have Apple products, so I'm not sure how long it takes them to fix things, but the manufacturer is always the person you go to first when you have a problem. Especially when you know you have extended warranty.

bakebeans · 14/05/2023 09:43

Of course it will invalidate the warranty. I thought everyone knew that. How do you know the local repair man knows what he's doing?

Shade17 · 14/05/2023 10:02

Of course it invalidates the warranty. They didn’t need to tell you because it’s obvious!

SunnySaturdayMorning · 14/05/2023 10:05

YABU. They shouldn’t have had to tell you.

The product is Apple. If you wanted it properly fixed and not a cheap repair you should have gone to Apple.

LittleBearPad · 14/05/2023 10:05

Why didn’t you take it to Apple?

Whatt · 14/05/2023 10:11

I'm with you OP, I didnt know that.
I thinks its dodgy that he told you after I think he knew he fucked up the button.
I would be right back to him and said since you repaired it all this stuff isn't working.

ADHDDDDDDDBOOM · 14/05/2023 10:15

Hang on that sounds like crap.

We smashed our iPad screen and the Touch ID still works.

Id be pissed off too OP, but at the same time Apple cost a fortune in repairs and Touch ID isn't worth it

OneTC · 14/05/2023 10:17

I have never owned anything apple and am fully aware of their strictures, it's one of the reasons I'd never actually buy anything they made. Their entire business model is based on keeping you within the apple ecosystem at all times.

That said I think they definitely should have mentioned it, this thread makes it clear that not everyone does know

BreviloquentBastard · 14/05/2023 10:21

Good third party repair people can fix it without messing up the touch ID, it is doable, so it sounds like you went to a bit of a cowboy. Resetting it isn't going to help because it's a hardware issue rather than software, it's to do with the type of screen they put on them.

Unfortunately it's not his responsibility to advise you of your warranty, though he should have told you about the touch ID thing beforehand, that's not common knowledge outside the world of tinkering and repairing (while I think "using a 3rd party repair company invalidates your warranty" is just common sense).

Unfortunately this is just one of those "expensive lesson learned" situations. Go to Apple in future!

LauderSyme · 14/05/2023 10:22

This is why, though tiresome, it is worth reading the blurb that comes with new products, because the small print would have told you this.
