To think I should have been told this invalidated my Apple warranty before it was repaired?

DS broke his iPad screen. Went to a phone repair shop round the corner who said they’d replace it for £85. They have no warnings or stipulated any conditions.

I said that’s fine. iPad is six months old so I didn’t want it to be broken for long.

Went to pick it up today and he revealed that because he was a third party repairing the iPad that I couldn’t use the Touch ID because Apple don’t like you going to places that aren’t them.

I wasn’t very happy and said I wish he’d told me but it’s too late now.

Anyway I found out it invalidates the warrant which has 18 months left on it! And now the home button is playing up and I can’t download any apps it says ‘payment incomplete’ doesn’t even show a ‘download’ button.

AIBU to think I should have been told BEFORE the repair that it would mean I couldn’t use Touch ID? I’m really annoyed the iPad cost a fortune and now if it breaks they won’t touch it at Apple.

Pretty sure is in the terms and agreements you accept when you first turn the phone on. The ones that are about a million pages old that everyone no-one reads.

It's not down to a third party to tell you what you have agreed to.

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 14/05/2023 10:26

YABU because all warranties are void if a repair is undertaken by an unauthorised 3rd party. Doesn't matter if that's a tablet or a washing machine. It's a basic in the T&Cs of a warranty.

I don't have Apple products, so I'm not sure how long it takes them to fix things, but the manufacturer is always the person you go to first when you have a problem. Especially when you know you have extended warranty.

When I damaged my iPad screen, I booked a repair on line, a return box was delivered next day and they possibly waited for me to pack it there and then or they returned the next day to collect it. A couple of days later it was return to me, so a few days overall and would have been quicker if I had been able to get to a store.

PurpleFlower1983 · 14/05/2023 10:27

Sorry OP but I thought this was common knowledge too. Next time go to Apple, they are great with any issues and the screen might not have been too much more!

PlusOneMet · 14/05/2023 10:28

I thought everyone knew this? Its not his fault.

I’ve never known any third party do a good job on an Apple product.

Modda · 14/05/2023 10:28

Yes you have to get it repaired at Apple. It's costs loads more but then the warranty remains valid. It does tell you this in the Apple terms.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/05/2023 10:30

I don't own any Apple products and even I knew that going elsewhere invalidates the warranty.

It's not just Apple though. I'm fairly certain that with any product under guarantee/warranty the repair has to be carried out by the manufacturer or one of their approved repairers or the warranty is invalidated.

KateTheEighth · 14/05/2023 10:30

I thought this was common knowledge

I believe it's the case for pretty much everything that has a warranty

IrregularChoiceFan · 14/05/2023 10:30

I think when dealing with companies like Apple, who would charge you to take a photo if they could get away with it, it is pretty obvious that using some dodgy phone repair place would void the warranty.

Banditdog · 14/05/2023 10:30

Whatt · 14/05/2023 10:11

I'm with you OP, I didnt know that.
I thinks its dodgy that he told you after I think he knew he fucked up the button.
I would be right back to him and said since you repaired it all this stuff isn't working.

You must be the only two people in the country that don’t know that. 🙄

And the repairman didn’t need to mention it at all, it is nothing to do with them, this is something between OP and Apple.

Sirzy · 13/05/2023 23:04

to be fair I thought I was common knowledge that if you use a third party repair company it invlidates warranties

Yes. This applies to anything - cars, toasters.... not just Apple products.

Bathroomlove · 14/05/2023 10:39

OneTC · 14/05/2023 10:17

I have never owned anything apple and am fully aware of their strictures, it's one of the reasons I'd never actually buy anything they made. Their entire business model is based on keeping you within the apple ecosystem at all times.

That said I think they definitely should have mentioned it, this thread makes it clear that not everyone does know

It's not an Apple thing, it's a warranty thing.

unauthorised repaid invalidate warranties. It's not Apple and it's not new.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 14/05/2023 10:48

It’s not an Apple problem, it generally how warranties work. If the ship started out with “yes I’ll fix it but it’ll invalidate your warranty” no one would ever use them because you’d second guess it.

Frustrating but it’s on you to check

Bensteeth · 14/05/2023 10:50

Apple have confirmed that TP screen repairs no longer invalidate the warranty on an iPhone, reasonably I would expect this to extend to iPad too. Anything relating to the screen is going to be declined of course and anything this has affected, but unrelated issues should still be okay.

bellabasset · 14/05/2023 10:51

The local repair company warned my ndn that replacing the screen would invalidate a warranty. As it was a 2nd hand phone bought for her dd it was irrelevant. My friend's ds likes to repair his own laptops etc. He won't buy Apple because you can't buy replacement parts

pecantoucan · 14/05/2023 10:59

You clearly didn't read the terms of your warranty- that's on you.

Deathbyfluffy · 14/05/2023 11:00

Papernotplastic · 13/05/2023 23:16

I don’t think dropping it or cracking the screen voids the warranty.

You’re incorrect - it does. Most manufacturers won’t repair faults (even if unrelated) if the device has physical damage.

Well that’s not true - you can buy replacement parts, and there’s good sources of ‘as good as genuine’ items out there.

Sure it’s not as easy as other brands, but to say you can’t buy them isn’t true.

Cantthinkofaname2203 · 14/05/2023 11:10

Papernotplastic · 13/05/2023 23:13

No. Apple would have repaired the screen but they’d have charged 4x the price.

Yes. But the advantage of going to Apple is phone/iPad etc screens are notoriously difficult to replace and often break again soon after.

go to a 3rd party and it may be cheaper, but if it breaks again that’s it, done.

go to apple and if the repair isn’t successful they will fix/replace.

with a newish product I’d always go to apple. If it’s an old one that you want fixed up cheaply and it’s worth the risk go for the 3rd party.

£85 isn’t particularly cheap though? Isn’t apple only about £120?

Yes you can get spare parts.

there’s also a big market for parts on eBay- people strip down broken apple products and use the parts for repair.

Even if its not common knowledge it will be written on the warranty

I know someone who repairs apple laptops so I think it must be possible to get parts

philautia · 14/05/2023 11:42

No, you need to go to an Apple shop, not an electronics repair / resale place.

Apple are fantastic for repairs, keep that in mind for next time.

All warranties are invalidated by third party repairs. It’s not an Apple thing.

DH repairs laptops. He has a T-shirt with all the different types of screwheads used in laptops and it says I Invalidate Warranties.
