To think I should have been told this invalidated my Apple warranty before it was repaired?

DS broke his iPad screen. Went to a phone repair shop round the corner who said they’d replace it for £85. They have no warnings or stipulated any conditions.

I said that’s fine. iPad is six months old so I didn’t want it to be broken for long.

Went to pick it up today and he revealed that because he was a third party repairing the iPad that I couldn’t use the Touch ID because Apple don’t like you going to places that aren’t them.

I wasn’t very happy and said I wish he’d told me but it’s too late now.

Anyway I found out it invalidates the warrant which has 18 months left on it! And now the home button is playing up and I can’t download any apps it says ‘payment incomplete’ doesn’t even show a ‘download’ button.

AIBU to think I should have been told BEFORE the repair that it would mean I couldn’t use Touch ID? I’m really annoyed the iPad cost a fortune and now if it breaks they won’t touch it at Apple.

£85 for an ipad screen? It cost me 3 times that to get the screen on my Samsung phone fixed 😭 misses point of thread

If it was under warranty why didn't you take it to Apple to repair? The warranty is voided now

BUT

He's talking shit about Touch ID and the home button. He's fucked them up. Never has a repair shop not returned my Apple items functioning as normal because it's 'out of warranty'.

He's broken your iPad.

I think YOU should have read the Apple warranty before sending it to be repaired. That was your responsibility not the repairers

Floralnomad · 14/05/2023 12:29

If something is under warranty it’s fairly obvious that it needs to go to a main dealer for repairs not a cowboy down the road .

cestlavielife · 14/05/2023 12:30

Get a, better case like griffin or similar
Get a standalone gadget accident insurance for any new product

YouveGotAFastCar · 14/05/2023 12:35

It’s not true that the warranty would have been voided by the drop anyway. Apple are pretty good with that, they’d likely have offered a reduced price for the fix, and the rest of the warranty would have stood. It always has for me.

But yeah, any third party repair is going to invalidate a warranty. No company will cover someone that they have no idea about, fixing their device with random parts. They’ve got no way, or wish, to validate parts or skills… so you’d have needed to take it back to Apple.

Your only valid complaint is if he didn’t make it clear that he wouldn’t be able to fix the TouchID, if he’s saying that he hasn’t got the skill set to do that, and not that yours wasn’t repairable. But nothing he can do now will revalidate your warranty, so you’re a bit stuck there.

starfishmummy · 14/05/2023 12:36

It's not just Apple though. It's standard with most warranties that an unauthorised/unofficial repair will invalidate them.

I'm with you OP, I didnt know that.
I thinks its dodgy that he told you after I think he knew he fucked up the button.
I would be right back to him and said since you repaired it all this stuff isn't working.

This is the point for me. He made sure to mention it after it was done and he got his money!

But everyone is too busy falling over themselves to be know-it-alls and serves-you-rights.

Collect your medals.

I have never owned anything apple and am fully aware of their strictures, it's one of the reasons I'd never actually buy anything they made. Their entire business model is based on keeping you within the apple ecosystem at all times.

That said I think they definitely should have mentioned it, this thread makes it clear that not everyone does know

It's the same for Samsung etc as well (phone wise) but generally ANY manufacturers warranty will become invalid if you use an unauthorised third party for any repairs.

toodlesofoodles · 14/05/2023 13:50

OP he should have told you before he fixed it that it would render the Touch ID unusable.

As an aside apple warranty is only 12m. I think you'll have to find out from them how much it will cost to repair or claim on house insurance for a new one.

WhiskeyTime · 14/05/2023 17:51

It’s fairly obvious that repairs done by anyone that isn’t Apple invalidate the warranty. It’s hard to believe you wouldn’t realise that.

He couldn’t have told her that because it shouldn’t have done. He’s just shit and his job and messed up.

Lifesagamethentheytaketheboardaway · 14/05/2023 17:57

Well obviously your warranty is void if someone other than Apple does stuff to your product. This is common knowledge.

It was in warranty. Why didn’t you use the warranty and have Apple repair it? It’s your own fault.

CheersForThatEh · 14/05/2023 18:02

Yabu, it's your warrenty to check the terms of.

It's the same for loads of stuff.

Not to stick the boot in, but it's common knowledge that you only get the manufacturer to repair it or the warranty is void - of course a manufacturer won't take responsibility for someone else having a tinker.

You cant ask Samsung, as an example, to fix your Apple and expect Apple to honour the guarantee afterwards, however good or qualified Samsung is (or isnt).

The person fixing your screen might be massively over or underqualified for the job. That's why manufacturers need you to use their suppliers.

Yes. This applies to anything - cars, toasters.... not just Apple products.

Not strictly true with cars, you can have it serviced by a third party and as long as it’s serviced to manufacture’s spec then legally they can’t void the warranty.
