I don’t pay for a TV Lic

StarDolphins · 13/05/2023 20:29

But I really want to watch 24 hours in police custody. Tv Lic website says I can’t watch anything with live tv or BBC Iplets either live or catch up.

Can I still download the Channel 4 App to watch this non-live programme even though the app has watch live things too?

Isn’t it obvious? Because the BBC no longer even pretends to be impartial. It is effectively a woke/left-wing propaganda unit, and makes no apologies for that. Even Radio 4 is rubbish now. The last time I tuned in, there was a discussion about Jane Austen. At last, I thought, the BBC is doing its job and promoting high culture. How naive! Within five minutes, they got on about a minor character in one of Austen’s novels who owns a sugar plantation. That then became an excuse to spend the rest of the show talking about slavery and colonialism. About the only good thing left is In Our Time. But Melvyn Bragg is getting old. As soon as he dies, or retires, they’ll ‘revamp’ it. Or, to put it another way, ruin it.

I barely watch TV anymore. I make do with YouTube, DVDs, books and video games

And there it is!

Im99912 · 15/05/2023 13:03

@Bathroomlove.
you carry on paying for it

I’m not paying for it and if there is a loophole that means I can watch what I want without paying for it I will

Ive had the usual threatening letters from hem but as I have an outside post box and big gates at my house they can’t actually get to my front door to see if I have a tv or not

i don’t watch a lot of tv but when I do I won’t feel guilty for not paying the BBC licence fee
I have Netflix Amazon and Now Tv
all of which I happily pay for as and it’s got stuff on it that I want to watch

bbc is normally series that I have missed and watch on
BBC Iplayer

Anyone who still pays a TV licence is supporting a paedophile supporting organisation in my opinion.

Is this on account of Jimmy Savile?

Kindofcrunchy · 15/05/2023 15:43

@StarDolphins we haven't had a license for years. Refuse to line the pockets of bbc fat cats. We just watch catch up, DVDs and Netflix, and my husband plays video games which I like watching (or joining in sometimes). I do miss Line of Duty though!

Could people please stop banging on about the BBC being 'woke'?

Why?

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 14/05/2023 22:24

Tv licence is for all live tv, it isn't specidix to just bbc channels

No it's not. It's just for BBC.

Magenta82 · 15/05/2023 15:54

If anyone wants to stop the letters you just need to go on their website and tell them you don't watch live TV.
They contact you once every 2 years or something and check it's still the case, but that is the only contact I have.
I watch netflix, amazon, non-bbc catch up etc, but my TV isn't tuned for live TV.

@Ffsmakeitstop

You are wrong.

Why?

It gets tiring hearing right wing rants.

Watchkeys · 15/05/2023 16:34

Yes @StarDolphins you can.

CannibalQueen · 15/05/2023 17:02

You can't watch any live tv. Yes, you can watch it on catch-up. (C4 not BBC) BBc is completely verboten. You can leave it a day and watch the polis do their thing later.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 15/05/2023 17:22

you don't need a licence for radio at all or to view their websites

you need one if you watch BBC programmes whether live or on iplayer

you also need one for live TV like STV or channel 4 as they get some funds for news

you don't need one for watching all4 or any other catch up channel

unless someone is videoing live bbc straight to you tube you don't need a licence for you tube or netflix tiktok etc

you may need one for sky amazon as they do transmit BBC programmes

Pemba · 15/05/2023 17:53

It doesn't matter if a programme on Netflix or Amazon Prime etc was originally made by the BBC. So long as you don't watch or record live TV (on any channel) or use the BBC iplayer, you don't need a licence.

DdraigGoch · 14/05/2023 23:20

As well as the cycle of threatening letters (they get steadily worse before reverting back to the start) that I recycle, I've had a couple of "we called but no one was in" notes. Well what did they expect if they're going to turn up at 11am on a weekday?

Out of interest, does anyone know where live videos on Facebook or Youtube stand?

The vast majority of Facebook/YouTube live streaming does not fall within the TV Licence

If it is from a ‘broadcaster’ under the communications act then it would fall within scope of the licence

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2003/21/section/405

Eg a livestream on the Sky News YouTube would be in scope, but an uploaded video wouldn’t
A livestream from Joe Bloggs would be out of scope

Thanks, was curious as to where the line was drawn. For the coronation we went to a pub, otherwise there's not a lot worth watching live if you're not into sports.

Thank you & yes I only watch Netflix & prime etc & never anything love but when I declared I don’t need one a couple of years ago, I deleted everything including Channel 4 app as it had live stuff on so I’m glad to know I can watch catch up now!

I definitely did believe they had a way of knowing🤣

@Im99912

its not big and it's not clever to sponge off the back of people who do pay it. Why do you think that's ok to do?

Thats interesting. Do you think I’m ripping off this private company who made profits of Five billion plus?

Feckthelotofthem · 16/05/2023 01:34

"It is an offence under section 363 of the Communications Act 2003 to watch live on any channel, TV service or streaming service, or use BBC iPlayer on any device, without a valid TV Licence. Section 365 of that Act requires a person to whom a TV Licence is issued must pay a fee to the BBC."

BodgerLovesMashedPotato · 16/05/2023 01:49

If you want to watch any live TV, not just BBC, then you need a TV licence.

I've been shown the relevant guidance and stand corrected. No need to laugh at my expense. I've learnt something I didn't know. I've always known how not to take the piss though.
