Does my toddler need A&E- urgent

Namechangetimes100 · 13/05/2023 19:12

18 months old, was clowning around me, tripped and caught himself on the corner of the door frame. Right in the middle of the forehead at the most ‘protruding‘ point.Cried but for like 30 seconds, minute max but a bruised lump has come up, almost cartoon like. Does he need an and e? Husband going bananas at me. On hold to 111 now

Has he been sick?

Simonjt · 13/05/2023 19:13

For us its a yes for head injuries.

Camillasfagwrinkles · 13/05/2023 19:13

I would take him. He's probably fine but better for your peace of mind.

Nope not been sick

111 will tell you.But don't worry too much if your toddler is alert and acting normally -heads always come up in huge bumps.

MightyEagle · 13/05/2023 19:14

I can't tell you if he needs A&E. But I can tell you that foreheads do swell terrifyingly- my kids have come up in huge egg lumps a fair few times, and it's never been serious.

Username9917 · 13/05/2023 19:14

If he vomits, becomes drowsy, eyes seem unfocused or becomes limp then yes definitely, if they still seem their normal selves then expect they'll be ok, put ice packs on it, some calpol, and monitor them carefully. 111 may well send you to a and e as they always err on the side of caution, but you know your child and know if they seem their normal self or if something is off. Try not to worry, children (and heads!) are extraordinarily resilient!! Xxx

For catching his head on a door frame?

My son went into a glass door at his nans when he was 18 months old. A big egg lump appeared, took him to a&e and after a bit of a wait doc said it's fine and looks worse than what it really is. I probably would but that's me on the safe side. He will likely be fine but give you peace, typical toddler.

custardbear · 13/05/2023 19:15

Call 111. My children had a few of these which were fine, easily grow an egg after a bump 😳 quite scary

MuffinToSeeHere · 13/05/2023 19:15

I would say watch and wait although 111 will advise you to go to a&e as they do for all you g children.

Also side note but please tell your husband he is a twat, accidents happen and he's just lucky he wasn't clowning around him when he fell. I hope you get to go 'bananas' when he inevitably hurts himself on your husband's watch.

Greengold123 · 13/05/2023 19:16

111 will fully assess you but if he hasn't lost consciousness, vomited, become drowsy, fallen from height, has bleeding of fluid from ears or nose and is otherwise normal except the swelling I wouldn't worry too much

Simonjt · 13/05/2023 19:16

For catching his head on a door frame?

Did he catch his head on the door frame, or did he fall and land/hit his head on the door frame?

WoolyMammoth55 · 13/05/2023 19:16

In your shoes I'd take him and be prepared for them to keep you under observation a few hours to rule out concussion. Take snacks and toys.

It may not be want you were hoping to hear but IMHO you don't mess around with head injuries.

Gcsunnyside23 · 13/05/2023 19:16

I would if he's sick or seems out if sorts and sleepy. If none of these then id leave it and keep eye on him

soggydigestives · 13/05/2023 19:17

I would say only a and e if he becomes drowsy or is sick. Keep an eye on him and put cold compress on his head, otherwise I'm sure he'll be ok.

It’s cartoon like it’s so profound

Stay on the phone to 111, they will triage you quite quickly. But a hard protruding egg is good - it's the body's defences to protect the scalp. Anything "boggy" or indented is a big red flag and sickness too.
111 will probably say stay home but give you all the signs to watch for over next 24 hours.

PinkPlantCase · 13/05/2023 19:19

I wouldn’t even call 111 if he’s still his normal self apart from the bump.

mynameiscalypso · 13/05/2023 19:19

Gosh, maybe I'm a terrible parent but it wouldn't occur to me to go to A&E. DS has had similar injuries, once at home and once at nursery, and it was just a matter of cuddles and a cold compress on the bump.

Sererus · 13/05/2023 19:20

No, 111. Whenever we've called 111 for a head injury they just advise to monitor for 48 hours, definitely no mention of A&E unless there are any risk factors (vomiting, unconsciousness, unable to stay awake, etc.)

Namechangetimes100 · 13/05/2023 19:21

Simonjt · 13/05/2023 19:16

Did he catch his head on the door frame, or did he fall and land/hit his head on the door frame?

He lost his balance and hit his head on the door frame, but he fell from sort of crouching/ standing and was quite close to to the door frame. Kicking myself

Yes you’re right I remember hearing that before, bogging and mouldy fruit is the texture to watch out for

MinnieMountain · 13/05/2023 19:23

When DS did that, a doctor called back after 10 minutes and assessed him. He was happily eating supper by then. We were told to wake him every hour to check he wasn’t drowsy.

Guardiansofthegalaxi · 13/05/2023 19:25

My Ds frequently banged his head as a toddler - if he caught his forehead it would always come up like this. He was fine. But, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being cautious. As others have said, keep an eye on him and call 111 if any changes. These eggs are alarming to look at but will most likely settle by the morning.
