Does my toddler need A&E- urgent

Namechangetimes100 · 13/05/2023 19:12

18 months old, was clowning around me, tripped and caught himself on the corner of the door frame. Right in the middle of the forehead at the most ‘protruding‘ point.Cried but for like 30 seconds, minute max but a bruised lump has come up, almost cartoon like. Does he need an and e? Husband going bananas at me. On hold to 111 now

Wouldn't even occur to me to seek medical attention for a bumped head that resulted in a one minute cry and an egg. I'd only be doing anything if there were other symptoms like vomiting or drowsiness.

I don't know why you're kicking yourself or your husband is going bananas, the toddler years are full of bumps and bruises, often to the head. It's really really not a big deal. Just keep an eye on him.

Our youngest once hit her head three times in one day at nursery, all fine. It's just life with a toddler.

dammiejodger · 13/05/2023 20:00

Hi OP HV here. As long as he's ok, not drowsy, hasn't been sick, no dizziness and seems ok I would watch and wait. The eggs are worse than they look. Don't blame yourself, they will do all sorts.

cannaecookrisotto · 13/05/2023 20:08

Their heads are quite resilient.

I was in IKEA with mine, she was faffing and tripped, caught her forehead on the corner of a wooden bed frame, there was blood everywhere, I shit myself.

Drove her straight to A&E expecting trauma and scans, but the nurse just examined her eyes, glued her head shut and said to watch out for drowsiness and vomiting!

She was fine. Still has a little scar and a strong aversion to IKEA but they said egg is good, it's when it sinks it's really bad as it means the fluid is going elsewhere and could indicate a fracture of some kind. I then asked what they do when the skull actually fractures and she said for the majority of minor fractures they just observe as it heals itself.

A good rule of thumb is (I found this from hours of googling watching for drowsiness all night), if they fall more than their height then get them checked out.

SarahSmith2023 · 13/05/2023 20:12

eggs are a good thing. If they're themselves and not drowsy or vomiting then I do nothing more than keep an eye on them.

I hope the clinician calls you soon & puts your mind at rest.

Your DH, is it just a reaction to being worried or is he always critical? Toddlers & children have many bumps & bruises. Newsflash, he'll have them when DH is looking after him too!

my friend was always kicking off at her DH for not 'watching' their DD carefully enough, etc etc. he was the main SAHP. One weekend when he was at work & she had their DD, the DD ran into the door frame and at 20 still has the (one & only) scar.

Angrymum22 · 13/05/2023 20:15

When my DS did the same aged 15 mnths I took him straight to A&E. I’d just done my level 2 safeguarding children so all I could think of was if he did have a concussion and we’d delayed seeking medical attention it would be a massive red flag.
He fell into a corner where two doorframes met resulting in three separate vertical bruises. The triage nurse was lovely and said at least he hadn’t split the skin like her son had done result in a lovely vertical scar from his hairline down to his nose. I have to say that made me feel better.
They observed him for a couple of hours and gave us the usual head injuries info.
He has survived to adulthood, I don’t know why I worried about head injuries. He has played rugby since age 6 and has a concrete skull.

lljkk · 13/05/2023 20:16

I can only say that when this happened to DC (ugly huge swollen bump, not bleeding, child seemed fine in selves), I didn't get health care & the toddlers were fine.

The bump went down after a few hours each time.

TimeSlipMushroom · 13/05/2023 20:18

An ice pack will help the bump go down

Actually a huge lump is a good thing. It means the swelling is outside the skull and not going I side

head injuries without a bump and vomiting That’s a 999 call for sure.

chickenpiehashbrown · 13/05/2023 20:21

My DD once was running aged 2.5, then fell & her forehead was the first thing to hit a concrete step, her arms did little in the way of breaking her fall. There was a small gash & it pissed out blood for twenty seconds then stopped. It healed well & she has a slight scar now. Next door neighbour is a Doctor & he said as long as she's not sick, unusually drowsy etc then no need for any further action.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 13/05/2023 20:21

Yep for a head injury. Better safe than sorry

Nocutenamesleft · 13/05/2023 20:22

I’d go in just to make sure. With a toddler yoh don’t wanna leave things like this. But you can make your own way there. I think for sure get it checked out though.

we wouldn’t turn this away and are always more cautious with toddlers.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 13/05/2023 20:23

Thing is. Are you going to put him to bed soon so you won't know if he's drowsy or concussed which would also bother me.

RockyReef · 13/05/2023 20:27

Adventurous boys here, so lots of head bumps so far including three nasty ones that required a lot of stitches. For us a head bump as you've described with a nice egg that pops out would not be a&e or even 111, we'd just ice it and give Calpol (assuming no sickness, normal pupil reaction, no loss of consciousness or bleeding). A doctor friend told me if it's a nice egg then that's ok, if it's squashy or indented then it's a&e, if headaches persist after 3 days then best to check at the GP / 111. My youngest has several head scars because he is a clutz!

Crispymandm · 13/05/2023 20:28

Iv been told a hard bruise is ok, a “squishy” bruise needs to be seen. That was from ambulance staff when my eldest did the same thing and I panicked x

Vgbeat · 13/05/2023 20:31

My daughter did similar, I rushed her to minor injuries in a complete panic but the doctor did say if it blows out into a lump it's usually OK as the pressure has gone out rather in.

My eldest ran into a wooden step edge aged 2. Right between her eyes, we had literally just arrived at a holiday house. Called 111 and they made me press it so I could tell them how it felt. We didn’t need to go to A&E but you can still see the dent in certain lights.

Munchyseeds2 · 13/05/2023 20:31

As long as he is OK in himself I wouldn't call 111 or take him to A&E
Just keep an eye, calpol and cuddles

Ungratefulorunreasonable · 13/05/2023 20:31

I wouldn't, but I know the signs of concussion, would have him sleep in my bed and set an alarm to check him every couple of hours.

Cotswoldmama · 13/05/2023 20:36

My son had this it was really close to his eye and it was huge. We hadn't seen one before and took him to A&e and they said to keep an eye on him but it's a good sign to have the swelling on the outside and it's more worrying when there's no swelling to be seen as then there could be swelling inside their head.

Tigofigo · 13/05/2023 20:37

My DC hit their head, HARD, on the pavement from standing height multiple times over the course of 2/3 years. I feel awful writing that now. Had numerous huge eggs / giant bloody bruises. But he was never concussed.

MardiMoo · 13/05/2023 20:40

My daughter (at 2) hit her head when under the supervision of my DP and a huge bump appeared and it looked awful. She was fine in the end and we didn’t take her to hospital. Just iced the bump and let her rest. It is worrying though. Naturally, I tore my DP a new asshole about it at the time.

ChrisPPancake · 13/05/2023 20:41

Ds2 did this (ran full tilt into the doorframe). Massive bump came up, but with the line of where he'd hit down the middle so he looked like he had an arse on his forehead! 🍑

We phoned 111. "Is he sleepy?" "Well yes, but it's bedtime"
"Is he confused?" "He's 14 months old, he's permanently bewildered."
They sent us to A&E who observed for a bit then sent us home with a leaflet.

Same here. I'd be more worried if there was no outward sign and certainly wouldn't be sitting in A & E if he hadn't lost consciousness, wasn't falling asleep and wasn't vomiting.

Mooshroo · 13/05/2023 20:43

They always do it right before bed don’t they 😅

Bellagio40 · 13/05/2023 20:45

He’s probably fine but when I called our doctor with a similar injury they told me to bring him in “just in case”
