For an early sixties man to be seemingly going deaf and not as 'sharp' minded as they should be. For example, straining to hear people or not hearing at all. Struggling to remember basic instructions such as 'I will be round tomorrow and Wednesday between 3PM-6PM.' Also extremely anxious (Has had panic attacks and is consumed by anxiety generally) and constantly exhausted despite not having to work or going out all that much. The simplest thing such as going out for the morning to the shops will exhaust them. They refuse to think there is a problem and will not see a doctor. They have no diagnosed physical health issues.

I’m 65 and hope someone I trusted would help me if this was the case for me.

The issue is that they think they are fine. Even with the panic attacks, they say it's just because they hadn't eaten enough. Seem to be in denial.
All seems a bit young to be going through the memory and hearing issues too.

It is young to be experiencing that. I work part time in a secondary school and have an active life, I would say the only difference is occasionally I feel knackered if I’ve been digging on the allotment for a few hours. I’m not superhuman. Why are they not eating properly if it means they become unwell? That is worrying in itself. Have they experienced these symptoms when they were younger?

They don't eat well but they certainly eat enough. They are overweight if anything.
I think they are saying it's that rather than admitting the anxiety is completely out of hand. So they are blaming it on lack of food instead.

Can you not encourage them to go and get some blood tests. Could be iron/vitamin D deficiency that is causing the exhaustion or tiredness

The hearing loss should also be looked into. I am in my late 50s and I have noticed I have less hearing in my left ear these days.

Henhipster · 13/05/2023 19:08

Another way of looking at it is the retirement age for those who are now 60 is 67. Whatever you think of the politics this, it means it is considered that one would be expected to be healthy/active/function enough to be in the world of work until that age unless there are health issues. I think you could investigate help in the theme of safeguarding a vulnerable older person.

Refusing any blood tests. Just refuses to admit there is a problem.

If they’re refusing to admit there’s a problem I think there’s little you can do. It’s easy to get a hearing test at Boots/Specsavers, they could try multivitamins and borrow from the library or buy Paul McKenna’s self help book on anxiety. You can’t make them do this, it must be frustrating and upsetting for you.
Just remember for yourself that this is not necessarily an inevitable consequence of ageing. When I was 29 I dated a man 11years older than I and on his 40th birthday I went over to his house after work and cooked dinner. When I carried in the birthday cake as our pudding he was asleep in the chair. I thought “OMG” it must be awful to be 40, you get tired so easily!” When I was 40, I was a single Mum with three young children (his) and reflected back on that situation as unsurprisingly I never nodded off like that
(and still don’t at 65).
Good luck and try not to worry, the more you prod the more denial you may get from them and it could really get you down. It sounds as though you’ve been very caring.

I suppose the deafness could be something as simple as earwax build up. My husband and this mother always suffered from this. You could ask if he does get a lot of wax - I think there is stuff you can put in your ears to flush it out.

However the other problems are worrying.
