In families. The joy on your kids faces, the days out, the laughter, the closeness and love?

The little joys and challenges and fun. I know it can be hard as well but here’s a thread to celebrate all the lovely buts.

What lovely things happened to you today?

My DD6 used some saved birthday money to buy a notebook she’d taken a liking to in a shop. It has those quite nauseating inspirational quotes and prompts at the top of each page and whilst she was asking me to look at a picture she’d drawn, I noticed under the prompt ‘When I look in the mirror…’ she’d written ‘I think I feel pretty.’ and it just filled with my heart with joy that she has self-esteem like that.

Under another it suggested ‘Buy a coffee for the person in the queue behind you’ and she’d written ‘No, I think I’ll buy one for myself.’ 😂so swings and roundabouts.

This really made me smile and laugh 🤣

I have a teenage ds who is generally vile to me.... sometimes when he calls me up demanding a lift he forgets he's meant to hate me and ends the call with "love you mum" 😂

Sammilouwho · 12/05/2023 14:58

My 5 year old has been super excited that they have caterpillars at school and they're waiting for them to become butterflies, she's been happily updating me everyday, it always makes me smile :)

My child asked me if anything good is happening at work today. She's 9
It sounds silly and little but I thought it was lovely actually. That she'd thought to ask and took an interest.

That’s really precious- so thoughtful 🥰

I was cacking myself about the cost of our build when I contacted our mortgage guy who can sort us out - phew!

Our builders just gave us our washing machine and oven back AND running water downstairs #comparativeluxury

Lamelie · 12/05/2023 15:03

Big ds, in his 20’s, has moved back home to start a new job wfh. He’s happily updating me chattering about Teams and showing me his desk set up. It’s very sweet.

PimpMyFridge · 12/05/2023 15:05

My two kids 10 and 12yo regularly tell me they love me (I feel luckier and luckier the older they get that this still happens... Hope they don't ever stop). Their nickname for me is Scrummy because I am and I do really good food (is what they say).

spudulike1 · 12/05/2023 15:07

my DD is 13 and a nightmare a lot of the time but when I woke her up this morning she sleepily said 'love you' and she just walked in and said 'I need a number 2 so bad and I cant do it at school, I dont want people to hear the drop' so she is still sharing things with me I suppose...!!

HowDoYouDoWhatYouDoToMeIWishIKnew · 12/05/2023 14:29

I had a horrific childhood, really awful, so I've really strived to give my kids so much better than I had.

They saved up all their pocket money a few years back to buy me a toy I always wanted as a kid, and never got. I bawled my eyes out. Then they put an old programme on the TV and they all sat and hugged me as I watched it, they knew that programme was a tiny bit of light in an otherwise dark childhood.

The older 2 have also taken me to see two of my childhood heroes in concert.

They know a lot of what I have been through, and know that I've done my best by them, even when I fuck up, and they do these things every now and then to try and heal my inner child. They are the most beautiful souls ❤️

So now I'm crying at my desk at work!

I'm so sorry you had a shitty time as a child @HowDoYouDoWhatYouDoToMeIWishIKnew It sounds like you are doing an amazing job to make your kids' lives the exact opposite of what you had. I hope you are proud of yourself as well as them

My daughter’s friend wasn’t picked up due to a mix up between mum and dad, I said I’d do it (mum phoned school to say yes please) and my daughter said ‘Mummy you’re so kind to look after other people like that’ it felt like the nicest compliment ever 😊

ComtesseDeSpair · 12/05/2023 15:19

Goddaughter: Auntie Comtesse?
Me: Yes, love?
GD: We‘ve been doing history at school. Did you know, if it was a long time ago, people would have put you on a fire.
Me: What?
GD: Yeah, Miss Lee was telling us yesterday how in the olden days they used to burn women in the village who they said were weird.
Me: Are you… calling me a witch?

She’s just about the only kid whose company I can stand to be in for even a minute, and now she’s pushing even that! But I actually LOLed at the matter of fact way she said it.

Beside that, in my childfree family, DH and I make each other laugh all the time. It’s the little things.

I lost a beloved animal this week, and DS (11) has been so sweet to me -- he held my hand the entire length of the school run, even though there were lots of older boys passing, and he's usually not so physically affectionate in front of his peers.

bluechameleon · 12/05/2023 15:24

I love the way you can feel them relax and calm down when you are holding them, however upset or angry they are.

So many lovely moments.

I am doing some volunteer work in DS1s school next week. He is nearly 13 and is beside himself with excitement. Yesterday he said;

'I am so looking forward to catching a glimpse of you at school next week! ......I'll have to pretend you aren't my mum though'.

It made me laugh and my heart melt that he was still young enough to be happy to see me but old enough to think of his street cred.

Absolutely love this.
Is so very typical of what any of mine would have said at that age. Really made me smile Smile

UsingChangeofName · 12/05/2023 15:44

My (adult) dd did the family shop today. (She like to do it as she likes to cook and this way she gets to choose what food we have in).
She leaves me the receipt and I transfer her the money.
Today, she left me the receipt and a bar of chocolate she'd seen that she just thought I'd like to try .

It's the little things, isn't it ?

mumpower3 · 12/05/2023 15:46

My son (age 4) ALWAYS picks flowers (from the over grown grass on our walk NOT peoples gardens 🙈) for me and his 2 sisters on our walk home from nursery. Comes home and puts them in a teeny pot of water for us. ❤️

Biscuitandacuppa · 12/05/2023 15:51

My dd (12) has just got in from school, she told me all her news and then asked what I’d done today. I’m off work after an operation and have done nothing except read a book! I’ve put off all the housework as I just don’t feel up to it. She said it’s nice I read a book, and maybe I should have an afternoon nap too. She’s just made me a cup of tea. Sometimes it’s just the little
things. 💗

My 22 year old coming to have a chat with me about how his job is going and that he's hoping that they will keep him on after his internship finishes - he works from home so we keep each other company as I work from home a lot too

I love it when my little grandson automatically puts his hand up to be held.... and the bigger one - although he is 9 - whispers "pick me up" as I kiss him goodbye when he goes to school.... so I do and squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze him so hard. He loves it!

Just beautiful! Your daughter must be so made up each time you do.
You're a lucky / lovely bunch 💕

We're having building work done. House is a horrendous tip. Dust everywhere.

DD (15) hoovered out my slippers for me! ❤️

FilthyforFirth · 12/05/2023 16:09

My youngest is 2.5 and drives me mad (as anyone who searches my history will note) but as his language is getting better his behaviour is improving (not his bloody sleep though). He is THE most polite 2 year old! He wanted some of my crisps earlier but refused to eat his sandwich first.

I held firm and eventually he came sat on my lap and said 'baby bready mummy' - which means he wants it cut into little pieces! I did that, he ate it all and was rewarded with some crisps. He absolutely beamed at me and said 'thank you mummy' happily chomping away on his crisps!

Lwrenagain · 12/05/2023 16:10

Lovely thread ♥️

My 5 year old DS is ASD and has just told me he wants to eat a sour pickle his dad bought. (Zero idea why)
I said no. He buggers off.
Next minute I hear, "you naughty fucking pickle!" And he came up to tell me it was was actually sour.
My DP and other children come home to him dancing around with his cheeks all on fire and did a challenge to see which one could cope with eating some of the pickle.
General consensus is - DS was correct, that was one naughty fucking pickle.

We celebrate any language he uses as for a really long time he was pretty much none verbal!

I love how my other kids just adapt to their younger brother and tonight will be the "naughty pickle" night to go with the less popular, "carolina reaper night" 😬
