To be appalled at the cost of food?

I know this has been done to death and we are in a cost of living crisis, but listening to the news they are intimating that it is slowly levelling out and the worst is over. Yes as far as I can see it's spiralling out of control.

I did a Lidl shop this weekend and bought absolutely nothing for main meals as I have a Hello Fresh box for three days coming, boys are going to their dad's for the weekend on Thursday and I have store cupboard stuff in already.

Therefore all I bought was stuff for lunch boxes, snacks, fruit and breakfast cereal. No cleaning stuff, oil or pet food needed this week and one bottle of wine. I thought it would be a bit less than I usually pay (only the second time I've used Hello Fresh) and certainly the trolley wasn't as full.

It came to £78!! Maybe £5 or so less than I have usually paid lately. It's out of control. How on earth are people supposed to manage and when will it stop going up all the bloody time?

Because I'm wondering why you are focusing on my choices when this thread is full of people describing the food they buy in the supermarket... and plenty is bog standard non organic meat and dairy. Why don't you call them callous?

But besides, it's pointless. The rising prices are not indicative of improved animal welfare standards.

You've stated that you don't care about animal welfare. That is utterly callous.

You keep talking about other people, as though being part of a crowd means you can hide in it.

You happily support animal cruelty and admit you don't care about it. What's not to find vile?

We have nothing else to say to each other. I think your lack of conscience sounds appalling, you think it's cool 'cos ooh...look at those other people doing stuff.

stayathomer · 08/05/2023 23:23

I do think Aldi and Lidl have started to come down from where they were a few months ago. I stopped going to both as I was in shock that it was equivalent to the more expensive supermarkets but I’ve found their cereals, bread, popcorn, fruit and meat have definitely moved recently. As others have said though, treats are gone, no croissants, brioche, hot chocolate-actually the big thing for us is the only yoghurts that are affordable are the fromage frais ones and juices are gone for us

Growing a few things in a window box is going to have a negligible impact on a family's food bills. It's utterly pointless

Nope. It's about getting nutritious stuff for free, when you've had to spend all your money on other things.

I've grown cut and come again salad leaves for 4 people on a windowsill. It's fresh healthy stuff, and the price of a pack of seeds.

So should I assume you stand in shops lecturing people on the food they buy? Or do you just do it anonymously online?

CharlotteRumpling · 08/05/2023 23:26

I dont even eat meat but I doubt berating people to buy organic and free range in a CoL crisis will work.

AbigHoleinmybucket · 08/05/2023 23:28

Actually the thread is about survival and that means that many of us don't have choices about what we eat.

I'm with CC on this. Feeding my family something that people have fed on since the beginning of time is more important right now than the thing (cow, chicken, goat) I am eating. It all comes down to the good old food chain.
It would be lovely to know every piece of animal/ produce I bought had had a comfy, decent life but frankly that's not my greatest concern right now.
The problem nowadays is that people put animals before people.

Don't be ridiculous. It's a discussion thread, on an anonymous forum.

This is how it works.

Sunsetred · 08/05/2023 23:29

@NorthernGnashers I saw this and I couldn't believe my eyes and Aldi was out of their own brand. I refused to buy it, which was a mistake, as how do you feed a toddler anything without ketchup?? Luckily, I have quite a few unused takeaway sachets saved in the cupboard.

My son was just diagnosed with coeliac disease. My shopping was so so much more last week

A poster has said that they don't care about animal welfare or cruelty. That's the issue I was responding to.

Organic and FR are so different. Only one of those thing supports cruelty. It's possible to make ethical choices, even with little money.

You aren't wrong salmon side 1kg is at least 18 quid I remember it used to be about £12. Lidl can be false economy for some things I like deli meats pastrami etc it's £2.20 in lidl or 2 for 3.50 in tesco same weight. It's becoming a joke I used to spend max £70-80 its now a good week if its £120. Cat food has also shot up going to try switch dcat to own brand.

I've just downloaded the Lidl app. We don't go often and I'm not sure if we'll save any money with it but it's worth a try.

Lady at Morrisons told me I should have the app for there too although we mostly shop online for home delivery. I've now got a voucher on there for two pounds off fruit. Not read the terms and conditions but we'll see.

I know if something is free then my data is the price.

I buy the same pack of 4 Greek yogurts from Lidl every week. A year ago, they were 99p,this week they were £1.69.

That's right! I get the very same ones.

Not just pies. Not sure how that came about - should have been things.

😂
I did wonder about the unnecessary pies 😆

Oh I wish people didn't see them as a thing/ produce 😞
Also entirely understand poverty and value for money, and that you can't have ethical choices when trying to feed a family in COL crisis 😔

@RatSlave that’s horrible. Most people I know think carefully about animal
welfare when they shop. It’s not the tiny minority of very wealthy people.

You would hate me, if food prices keep rising I was thinking of getting my own hens. If I had the land I would rear and slaughter my own meat. One cow butchered would last for ages in the freezer. I have no wish to give meat and dairy up I would go back to the old ways of doing it yourself. The meat/ dairy substitutes are more expensive than the animal products !!!

You're braver than most, whilst I respect that you would do the hard work it does have a mental impact too.

I don't hate that at all - totally support that way of eating meat. I'd do it myself if I had the land.

hereiamagainn · 08/05/2023 23:59

I am in a tight budget but will not buy eggs at all if I can’t buy free range. Battery eggs are a red line for me. I’d rather skip eggs altogether and eat something completely different.

LiveAHappyLifeBePositive · 09/05/2023 00:00

No need loaf of bread ingredients 45p ( Aldi prices ) plus electricity to cook 40p. 2 loafs fit in my oven so i get the cost down / loaf to 65p
Soda bread is cheaper at 36p for ingredients plus electricity for 2 at the same time is 56p
Although I usually stick something in the bottom of the oven to cook at the same time .
We eat a lot of bread so for us it’s quite a saving.

Before the price rises, food and electric, the loafs cost about half the above
