EMDR

I have read many promising reports about EMDR. If you have had EMDR, did it help? How many sessions did you need? Can anyone recommend a good EMDR practitioner in London or Hertfordshire? Many thanks in advance.

I am a therapist and use EMDR and it can work brilliantly for some and ok for others and not much at all for some. I know that isn’t massively helpful but it is down to lots of factors such as the complexity of your traumas, your current situation ie how stable you feel and existing coping skills. Sometimes it is seen as a magical cure which isn’t the case. Number of sessions is down to the factors I mentioned, so someone with a single trauma and who is managing well generally might need a handful of sessions, whereas someone with complex trauma and lots of stress/ instability might need many more. Have a look on the EMDR Association website where they have a list of therapists. Good luck

It worked in one session for me, to soften the emotional impact of a particularly vivid and intrusive memory of a traumatic event. It didn't cure my depression or anything - it just helped with that specific memory.

I am currently coming to the end of my EMDR treatment having had it since September. It has had a massive difference for me. I had long term complex trauma from childhood but am currently in a happy and stable situation which I think really helps the treatment to work. Dr Stephanopolous with Clinical Partners is brilliant.
