😆 Well that put us all in our place !

Sorry didn't read the other replies first! My kids go to a normal state school, it's a good school if that makes any difference. I actually think the level of maths they do at such a young age is pretty crazy, probably more so than the spelling/reading.

underneaththeash · 08/05/2023 20:28

We had those in year one too. I told thdm
they were too hard and we only did the easier ones. Then moved schools!

HaroldMeaker · 08/05/2023 20:28

I was going to say yr 1 as I remember dd’s class getting similar (ordinary state primary) and like the op was surprised at the level of difficulty.

Huh… I wonder if chatgpt could come up with a story for the weekly words.

there appears to be some online story generators that you can feed in spelling lists.

Brilliant idea. I'll ChatGPT it in the morning.

Thank you.

is she breaking them down into syllables and then using her phonics knowledge to help her or are you trying to learn them as a string of letters.

It is quite a random list. I can’t quite work out what the pattern is supposed to be. Most of them are different spellings of /s/ but the school is chucked in. Pyramid doesn’t have and /s/ sound but does have /i/ spelt as ‘y’ like cylinder. Enormous just seems to be random.

The trick is to identify the part of the spelling that is going to catch you out.

CabernetSauvignon · 08/05/2023 20:43

At this stage, they should be encouraging children to read. lot. It's a much better, more secure way to learn spellings.

I hope this school makes proper allowances for children with dyslexia and dyspraxia?

AbigHoleinmybucket · 08/05/2023 20:45

We wouldn't be doing these in year 1 or 2 at our school in Wales. Many of our kids can't even spell or sound out a 3 letter word in year 3 & 4.

At our school it would be Y3

ItsCalledAConversation · 08/05/2023 20:50

Year 2 or 3.

Verite1 · 08/05/2023 20:51

Not RTFT. But Yr 3/4

SoftSheen · 08/05/2023 20:51

Year 2 (for children better at spelling) or Year 3 (all children), would be my guess.

DiscoBeat · 08/05/2023 20:51

2

zurala · 08/05/2023 20:54

I was going to say year 3/4

But... Do the tests matter? My son struggled with spellings so I just told him it didn't matter, we would give them a go but if he only got 1/2 right that was ok as long as he did his best. We talked about how in the real world there are spell checkers, and that lots of people spell things wrong and it doesn't affect their work, and we just pretty much ignored the tests.

Is that an option for you?

anerki10 · 08/05/2023 20:55

Blimey. My son is in reception. They're not really spelling yet. Just learning to read basic words like 'cat' 'hat' and 'sat'. It's all phonic at the moment. I certainly hope he won't be doing those kinds of words in Yr1. He'll be completely lost.

ItsCalledAConversation · 08/05/2023 20:55

Oh it’s for a private school! Well then, of course if you’re sending your kid private then you must want them to be beasted through the most difficult spellings so they can be as academically pushed as possible, as young as possible! If not, let them learn at a reasonable pace, for free, in state school.

LiveAHappyLifeBePositive · 08/05/2023 20:55

Year2/3
Although I would think the word school is probably year 1

DorcasLanesOneWeakness · 08/05/2023 20:56

Y3?

Redandyellowelephant · 08/05/2023 20:58

I'd say year 3? But I know squat about schools and what they teach when so it's an uneducated guess! My reception age child is still being taught cat, boat etc

rumpsteak · 08/05/2023 20:58

2/3

JustMarriedBecca · 08/05/2023 20:59

I would have said Year 1-2.
Some of them are easier than others.
Ours are grouped better though.

This is something I need to remember, more than her.

It really doesn't matter.

I'm 44 and rely heavily on spellcheck.

Why would anyone want this for their small children, let them be kids and learn through play at such a young age.

just spotted your update OP.
Ours went to independent and the attached nursery before.
By the time they started school they had been taught numbers, alphabet and sounds and were fluent in German ( just spoken ). So I’m guessing yours also has a nursery? Either that or it’s all they’re doing…..
As long as you do is up on the basics it’s all good.

Marchitectmummy · 08/05/2023 21:00

Year 1 or 2
