I’d say year 4/5 but judging by the other comments I’m probably way out 🤣

SophieinParis · 08/05/2023 19:52

3

Watersun · 08/05/2023 19:53

Year three.

FilthyforFirth · 08/05/2023 19:54

Only read the 1st page. I'm going Y1 as that looks exactly like DS1's spelling homework. Not in Hampshire are you?!

Testina · 08/05/2023 19:55

“I forgot to say it's an independent school. Which may make a difference.”

🤣🤣 yeah, that kind of does make a difference. That’s what you’re paying for. Choose a different school if it doesn’t suit your child.

kitsuneghost · 08/05/2023 19:56

Primary 4 or 5 (is that about 8 or 9?)

FilthyforFirth · 08/05/2023 19:56

Ah just seen your child isn't at a state school like mine, but I got the year right! Mad isn't it?!

Though DS doesnt have a weekly spelling test, just part of his weekly homework.

ImJustMeSimpleMe · 08/05/2023 19:57

My DC did them sort in year 3ish I think.

But then year 5 (I think, could have been 4) they got phenomenon in a spelling test...I could barely pronounce the word let alone spell it.

SmallbutMighty1 · 08/05/2023 20:00

As a teacher I'd say Year 1 as all those sounds are taught by the end of the year!

ittakes2 · 08/05/2023 20:03

I found a good system for spelling in year 1 - I typed up the spellings and put them as individual signs of their bedroom cupboard door and each night before bed would say 'point to the word school', 'point to the word science' - it really helped them recognise the words and just took 2mins each night.

cadburyegg · 08/05/2023 20:03

Our school doesn't ask kids to learn spellings but my y3 ds would struggle with these. Madness

Barnbrack · 08/05/2023 20:05

P3 I'd guess from my memory of school, maybe late p2?

Desperatelyseekingcommonsense · 08/05/2023 20:06

P3 / p4 in a streamed class DS is in P5 and he’s had some impressive get the dictionary out words.

Justalittlebitduckling · 08/05/2023 20:07

5

Autumntree · 08/05/2023 20:09

For DD this was a y1 or 2 range

The school suits her in many ways. But spellings are hard.

I remember struggling with spelling tests at the same age (despite being a very confident reader). I'm mainly concerned that rather than enthusing her, she's being deterred.

The only thing we can do is try to find the technique that helps her learn spellings. I did it entirely by rote. But among the various things we've tried, that had been one of the least effective for DD.

A couple of the teachers up thread made a good point about spellings being useless without context, so one thing we'll ll try this week is writing sentences for her with those words, so she gets used to seeing them in context.

@Fink Agree 100% it’s pointless

Cravingfiveminutespeace · 08/05/2023 20:21

@Fink Where are you now?

RunningRunningRunningRunningRunning · 08/05/2023 20:21

Year 1, I have a Y1 child and he could probably spell these if I asked. He reads much much harder words.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 08/05/2023 20:22

Huh… I wonder if chatgpt could come up with a story for the weekly words.

there appears to be some online story generators that you can feed in spelling lists.

Cravingfiveminutespeace · 08/05/2023 20:23

@Fink Sorry, that was for @helloharibo 🙈Which country are you in now?
