Year 3?

WinginItAtDIY · 08/05/2023 18:17

Id say year 3.

CatMattress · 08/05/2023 18:17

Y2, but highest stream

aintnospringchicken · 08/05/2023 18:17

I'm not in England so not sure about different yrs but I would say it would be for 8 or 9 yr olds

BillyNoM8s · 08/05/2023 18:17

Year 4. Maybe 3. But you've posted it here so you're probably gonna say reception.

It's a long time since I was anywhere near a primary school though

Todaynotalways · 08/05/2023 18:18

YEAR ONE!!!

I forgot to say it's an independent school. Which may make a difference.

But I am tired of DD (just 6) struggling with her spellings every week, it's starting to put her off literacy.

She usually cobbles together a 7 or 8 out of 10 by practicing every night. But some weeks it's a 3 or 4, which really dents her confidence.

They just seem so hard!

Maybe because I went to a state primary (35 years ago)... I was just wondering if this is normal.

I reckon Year 4.

Daffodil92 · 08/05/2023 18:19

I think they’re advanced for year one. That’s what, age 5-6?

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 08/05/2023 18:19

DS (in yr 1) read these well enough but he couldn't spell them all

I would be seriously considering a new school. Do they not follow a phonics scheme?

Yes, 5-6 year olds. Reading, writing and spelling in cursive... With these really tricky words...

And some thrive (their parents sure as hell tell you about it), but it's just a bit too much for DD.

What I find hard is that she's bright, but is starting to feel stupid compared to her peers, and that's not cool.

My cohort would have these in Y1/2 but we have tiny classes and high ability year on year 😬

neonjumper · 08/05/2023 18:24

End of year 2 as some of the phonics alternatives would not be taught earlier than this so the children would struggle to spell these as they are not harder to read and spell words.

NotYourHolidayDick · 08/05/2023 18:24

The school should be assessing what your child is able to do, and setting work accordingly. Adaptive teaching is so important. Nothing should be 'easy' or it isn't worth doing. But also nothing should be impossible either. Speak to the school.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 08/05/2023 18:28

They are very hard for year 1, I’d have said top group year 2 or average year 3.

tulippa · 08/05/2023 18:29

Completely pointless. How often is your DD going to be writing about thistles? Can kind of see why she might be learning how to spell 3D shapes if they've covered them in maths that week but I'm struggling to see the logic of teaching that set of words. The sc in science and school are working in very different ways and may cause misconceptions if taught together.
Are they actually teaching her how to spell them? Or just expecting her to memorise them for that week? Do they check she can still spell them a month or so later? And reminding her of spelling strategies if she can't? If no to questions 1, 3 and 4, it's all a complete waste of your and her time.

Tailfeather · 08/05/2023 18:31

My son is in year 1 and has words like this. Are you sure they are spellings? My son just has to learn reading them then uses them in a sentence.

Gymrabbit · 08/05/2023 18:32

I think they are the kind of spellings my daughter got at the end of year 1 and start of year 2 in a state primary. Top set.

she got 10/10 most weeks but spelling is her thing.
I think they are very hard though as I did when my daughter got them.
I teach secondary and many of my students would not get all of them correct.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 08/05/2023 18:32

Year 1? We did words like that in year 1.

Tailfeather · 08/05/2023 18:32

It says 'read the word' at the top. Not 'learn to spell'.

Iguanainanigloo · 08/05/2023 18:33

Year 3-4 maybe?

Bin85 · 08/05/2023 18:35

3 or 4

CarolDunne · 08/05/2023 18:36

My 8 year old learnt them this year
2nd class in Ireland

JFYI, it's "practising".

Iguanainanigloo · 08/05/2023 18:36

Gosh, that's tricky for year 1! My youngest is year one, and mainly gets all her spellings right (they're quite basic) and I think that gives her confidence in her abilities. She could definitely read all of these, but if I asked her to spell them I can only imagine how she'd concoct them pirahmid would be an example, but her school does "phonic spelling" so expect them to spell things out in the way they would using phonics
