Holiday let with inadequate curtains, AIBU?

MyMarmite · 08/05/2023 08:00

We’ve paid £1,000 for 7 nights in a holiday let. The master bedroom has no curtains or blinds in about 4ft of window and so I am awake early as it’s bright. diagram attached.

it’s an awkward window but I still think it’s unreasonable not to cover it if you’re letting it. This is a professional holiday let.

There are 2 other double bedrooms but dh is in one of them and they are 2 floors down, deliberately, as I snore. So I can’t use the other one as then he won’t sleep because of my snoring.

I’d rather go home than not sleep all week. It’s 2.5 hours away. AIBU?

Thanks to the info I have learnt on this thread I have now taken down all my curtains and donated them to an elderly neighbour. I checked and she is over 76

Thank you for the tip, I MUST do the same!

whatsinanameeh · 08/05/2023 12:09

Like a pp has suggested, mist window with water and stick up tinfoil, we had to do this In a hotel with the thinnest yellow curtains in the world that didn't even reach down to the windowsill

It is ridiculous to expect just sleep through the bloody sun shining through your window at the crack of dawn! Aesthetic over practicality

John Lewis and Sanderson will be announcing profit warnings as curtain prices tumble due to over supply.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/05/2023 12:26

@LizzieSiddal

Lots of people don’t close their eyes properly. And I’ve got dry eyes too which doesn’t help. I was told by eye casualty never to wear them again. Not even silk ones.

l love your user name♥️Are you going to the Tate?

ChessieFL · 08/05/2023 12:27

Loving the idea of everyone celebrating on their 76th birthday because they’re FINALLY grown up enough to have curtains and can now get a decent night’s sleep and stop getting dressed in the dark.

You can't expect the rooms to be furnished to your taste. You should have looked at the photos.
Personally, I don't know anyone who has curtains who isn't over the age of 76. It's not considered the thing to have in your house.
Buy an eye mask like they used to give out on aeroplanes.”

People under 76 don’t use curtains? 🤣
Don’t be daft, of course they do. Every house on our road has curtains at every window, residents of all ages.

carseatchaos · 08/05/2023 12:39

@SayOrPay I'm mid 20s and have curtains in all rooms except the bathroom. All my friends also have curtains.

All the show homes we visited before buying our place had curtains or blinds never ever seen a show home with nothing at all!

MissHavershamReturns · 08/05/2023 12:50

op I really hope you get some sleep, but can I just thank you for this thread.

Bit of a miserable coronation weekend here as most are poorly but the no curtains under 76 has made me laugh on a slightly bleak day.

LoobyDop · 08/05/2023 12:51

The crazy is strong on Mumsnet today. The extra bank holiday is clearly propelling us into some sort of societal breakdown.

MissHavershamReturns · 08/05/2023 12:52

Dp has just chipped in to say @SayOrPay must be the holiday let owner!

MyMarmite · 08/05/2023 13:01

Hello, I called the housekeeper and she sent around a handyman who has taped brown paper over the window so I’m expect to sleep tonight. Hurrah!

Glad it was so easily resolved @MyMarmite, enjoy the rest of your holiday 😊

Oblomov23 · 08/05/2023 13:25

Hurrah. Odd service though. I'd expect curtains. Comment about it in the review you leave.

Hankunamatata · 08/05/2023 13:27

Why didn't you just tape bin bag over the window

NB Check first if your neighbour already has curtains.

She should have if she is over 76. Otherwise, crack on. 🤣

Saucery · 08/05/2023 13:28

That’s a good response, hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Why didn't you just tape bin bag over the window

Because the window was 10ft high and it wasn't easily accessible.

Did you not view the accommodation online? Get an eye mask!

YABU and very entitled!”

Expecting curtains on a bedroom window in a holiday let us entitled now? Bloody hell 🤣🤣

Muchtooyoungtofeelthisdamold · 08/05/2023 13:46

Just wet the window with a cloth and a little water and put tinfoil on it, total blackout. Comes off easily and doesn’t leave any marks. Had to do this a few times when kids were little but it works a great!

willWillSmithsmith · 08/05/2023 13:46

I bought new curtains last week. I’m mortified by my ignorance. It’ll be some time before I reach 76. I’ll quietly pack them up and no one need ever know.

Hercisback · 08/05/2023 11:31

This thread is bonkers. 76+ to have curtains!

I can't think of a house I've ever been in that doesn't have some sort of window covering. Where is this mystery block of flats where everyone sees each other naked and only sleep during dark hours.

Must be Monica’s old flat in Friends - didn’t they have a naked neighbour who didn’t have curtains 😁

willWillSmithsmith · 08/05/2023 13:56

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 08/05/2023 10:35

The idea of curtains being horrendously out of fashion for anybody but pensioners has got to be right up there with the lockdown suggestion of using cheese instead of milk in your coffee!!

What the heck 😵‍💫🤢😁

Crikeyalmighty · 08/05/2023 13:58

Ha- when we moved into our lovely rented detached house in Copenhagen it had no blinds or curtains at all- we ended up with all kinds of make shift arrangements in bedrooms and bathroom but got used to it in the lounge. Danes don't do stuff at windows it seems!! It was very good if you liked being nosy!!

No, genuinely don't. My parents have curtains, as do my in-laws. My grandparents also had curtains. In our block of flats there are two out of 16 which have curtains, and both occupants are older than my in-laws. None of the other blocks in our road have curtains either. The old farmhouse does, but again the couple that live their look similar age to my IL's. I'm in my 40's, none of my friends or the DC's friends have curtains. Actually I dislike it and am waiting until the DC are old enough that I can put plant pots at the edge of the balcony to create a screen like our neighbours have done. Curtain rails are not standard in new builds and we don't have any in ours, MIL had huge issues finding someone to install some in their new place.

If OP was desperate to sleep, she'd get an eye mask and/or go to the doctor to sort the snoring. Complaining a holiday let isn't decorated as you would is, well, strange.

How old are your kids? Are there other blocks near you who can see in to your teen DC walking around undressed? Or do they all have to get dressed in the dark or hiding under their bed covers cos you're too stylish to put up blinds or curtains ?
