Holiday let with inadequate curtains, AIBU?

MyMarmite · 08/05/2023 08:00

We’ve paid £1,000 for 7 nights in a holiday let. The master bedroom has no curtains or blinds in about 4ft of window and so I am awake early as it’s bright. diagram attached.

it’s an awkward window but I still think it’s unreasonable not to cover it if you’re letting it. This is a professional holiday let.

There are 2 other double bedrooms but dh is in one of them and they are 2 floors down, deliberately, as I snore. So I can’t use the other one as then he won’t sleep because of my snoring.

I’d rather go home than not sleep all week. It’s 2.5 hours away. AIBU?

@UnaLaguna - ha, so true- mind you my house looked totally gorgeous at Xmas edged in the outside fairy lights with lanterns at the window!!

I don't know anyone who has curtains who isn't over the age of 76.

Where do you live? In a care home?

😂👌

BusyMum47 · 08/05/2023 23:02

It's a pain but not worth leaving your holiday over!! Swap bedrooms with husband? Get an eye mask? Tape something over the gap?

Curtains are definitely not common where I live

Well obviously, the river water causes mould.

😁

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 09/05/2023 18:02

Eye mask, dude.

Buy an eye mask like they used to give out on aeroplanes.

What?!?! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 you don’t know a SINGLE person who has curtains younger than 76…that is by far the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read! 😂😂😂😂😂 curtains are literally a totally normal thing to have at your windows…it’s what MOST people have at their windows!!

SayOrPay · 08/05/2023 09:25

No, genuinely don't. My parents have curtains, as do my in-laws. My grandparents also had curtains. In our block of flats there are two out of 16 which have curtains, and both occupants are older than my in-laws. None of the other blocks in our road have curtains either. The old farmhouse does, but again the couple that live their look similar age to my IL's. I'm in my 40's, none of my friends or the DC's friends have curtains. Actually I dislike it and am waiting until the DC are old enough that I can put plant pots at the edge of the balcony to create a screen like our neighbours have done. Curtain rails are not standard in new builds and we don't have any in ours, MIL had huge issues finding someone to install some in their new place.

If OP was desperate to sleep, she'd get an eye mask and/or go to the doctor to sort the snoring. Complaining a holiday let isn't decorated as you would is, well, strange.

’huge issues’ getting someone to install a curtain rail…🤔😂😂😂😂😂 sorry, it took me about 20 mins to install 4 curtain rails in my new house the other day.
this is absolute madness.

And yes @SBHon i get undressed in the dark!

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🙈 of my god this is getting funnier by the page!

Jewels14 · 09/05/2023 19:12

Would you be able to get a sleeping mask? I think that this may be the easiest solution. Otherwise, what about swapping with your husband?

IAmTheWalrus85 · 09/05/2023 19:30

This is one of my pet hates in holiday lets. Rubbish/non-existent window coverings.

But I’m delighted to learn that only people aged over 76 have curtains. So do you only have sex after it gets dark or do the neighbours watch?

Ihatepickingausername3 · 09/05/2023 19:57

What is this world where no one has blinds or curtains? 😆

Morgysmum · 09/05/2023 20:12

I would go with an eye mask, they are irritating but work. We have moved house and now have office style blinds, that block bugger all light, I an a light sleeper, so when the it starts to get light, I am woken up, but I don't want to be up at 5 am thanks. (if I don't have to be.) so we invested in eye masks. Even my partner, who can drop to sleep stood up, struggled with how light it is with only blinds. We are going to invest in curtains, but didn't have any storage either, we came from a house with all in built storage, so had to spend some money on some where to put our clothes. A new neighbour hasn't got curtains in his bedroom, I got a shock when he woke up one morning, no top on and I cannot be sure if he was wearing anything. Then he proceed to do a weird dance, dodgy dad dancing, not like yoga or anything. The bizarre thing is they have blinds downstairs, but not in the bedroom, where you would think you needed it.

Ihatepickingausername3 · 09/05/2023 20:17

Dodgy dad dance 😂

Bekstar · 09/05/2023 20:43

Can he cope with the light if so move him into that room and you move downstairs. It personally wouldn't bother me but I can sleep on concrete in the middle of a building site.

Thanks to the info I have learnt on this thread I have now taken down all my curtains and donated them to an elderly neighbour. I checked and she is over 76. Now I will patiently wait until I am allowed to buy some new curtains for myself in just over three decades. It will be a lot of early mornings woken by the light but clearly it’s what I need to do.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

MyMarmite · 09/05/2023 21:55

Missingmyusername · 08/05/2023 22:19

Too easy. 🤣

BECAUSE THE WINDOWS WERE 10FT TALL AND IM NOT 10FT TALL.

You dont have sex until you're old enough of course.

Cadnil · 09/05/2023 22:51

as an aside - if your snoring is so bad that your DH has to sleep in a different room it might be a good idea to go for a sleep study. I’m a snorer myself and it turned out I have sleep apnea.

I read this as hiw about swapping your husband, which I thought seemed slightly extreme, although not totally unexpected on MN

Having said this my DH is a snorer and there are some nights when I'd gladly swap him for a quieter model!🤣

"It's not considered the thing to have in your house"??? 🤣🤣🤣 What planet are you on? Curtains are essential, especially in a bedroom. Besides the light issue they provide insulation.

Under 76 here and I have curtains.

😂That's not actually what I said though is it! I said that I, personally, do not know anyone under the age of 76 who has curtains. Curtains are definitely not common where I live 🤷‍♀️ And for those worrying about my DC, we live on the top floor and are not overlooked.

Obviously everyone else on the thread who has curtains has erred by failing to live on the top floor.

Elaina87 · 10/05/2023 06:19

I hate it when I go away and there is too much light in a bedroom, it totally ruins things so yonbu. Can you complain and ask them to sort something out? Move to another place with better curtains? If not, move into another bedroom and your husband either needs ear plugs or to put some white noise on (you can get apps on your phone that will play white noise), it's brilliant and will block your snoring out!

Having adequate curtains isn't about being furnished or decorated to someones taste 😂 it's a basic expectation! As a paying guest you should be comfortable.

That’s a ridiculous thing to say. Almost everyone has blinds or curtains
