New moles

Should you be worried about them?
I have a small one on my chest and larger one on my side (have had this for a couple of years) but the chest one is new.
Do you need to get them checked out?

Yes especially if they are big or raised or irregular in shape.

I had a mole turn into a melanoma so would absolutely advise you to get it checked out as soon as possible. No harm done if it’s nothing, could save your life if it isn’t.

I've booked a full body skin check at our local private hospital- £150 but thought it was worth it for peace of mind. Years of holidays have left me wondering about the potential impact on my skin. As I move through my forties I'm definitely noticing new moles and freckles.

Do I just go to a normal Dr, can they tell by just looking?

Yes, your GP may refer you to a dermatologist if he/she thinks they need to.

Go get checked. I did recently as I had a zillion new ones post pregnancy. Gp had a quick look, decided one looked a bit suspicious, and then sent me to the dermatologist for a further pov. No fuss and no stress. It's been removed in the end as although she thought it was probably ok, the alternative was regular checks, and again it was all done with minimal fuss or discomfort. So don't worry! Even if something needs doing, it should be quite a simple process.

I downloaded the Skinvision app.
You photgraph your moles on it and it sets you reminders to check and compare pics, and also suggest a doc check if it's identified as needing it.
Obviously not a substitute for going to the gp with any mole, but it helps me remember to keep an eye on mine... I've just had to treat one precancerous lesion (actinic keratoses) and had a keratoacanthoma removed so I'm aware I'm at risk.

Dermnet is an excellent site for looking at pics of moles that look innocent but aren't... my DD1 is a GP and uses it and it was after looking there I made an appointment to get my nose looked at and sure enough it needed treating as it may turn into a BCC otherwise.!

Don’t forget to check all your skin, not just moles as a lot of melanoma doesn’t form in moles.
