Stupid question? References for internal job position.

It's been ages since I've applied for any job, and an opportunity for promotion has come up.

It's been advertised externally as well, so I have to go through the standard processes in my industry. If I were not already working here, I would put down my current line manager and probably the 'big boss' as my two referees.

I feel stupid for not knowing this, but who do I name as referees in this instance? My line manager and big boss will be on the interview panel. There isn't really anyone else who would feasibly comment on me from a management point of view.

Would I just leave it blank anyway, as I can't see why they would seek references anyway...

Am I overthinking this?

Can you ask your HR? My work don't ask for references when we work there already?
I applied for a role advertised externally (and got it) but didn't have to fill out the full application form

You are over thinking this - definitely put down your line manager, it would be a bit odd if you didn't. If there is someone else you have worked with on a relevant project, you may want to put them or a previous employer, again if relevant, otherwise go with the 'big boss'.
