Well, I hated the coronation…

I can see I am in the minority on here but I found yesterday to be distasteful on a gigantic scale. To watch the most privileged people travel in gold coaches & be decorated with diamonds and gold that is priceless in the face of millions of people struggling to eat/heat their homes just feels so wrong.

Our primary school has just opened a food bank. There are kids & families in crisis- children coming into school hungry & smelly as families can’t afford to wash clothes (I am not joking) - living in Dickensian conditions. Some of the teaching staff use the foodbank.

Yesterday was a display of obscene wealth. The royals didn’t even pay for it- we did. How can we find money for that absolute nonsense yet we can’t find money for large swathes of the population to feed themselves.

While Charles was sitting there in his gold costume holding these priceless items, plenty of families weren’t eating. It made me really angry.

I am tired of all the arguments for a royal family- how somehow these displays are quaint. Yesterday was an obscene display of wealth, inherited privilege and everything that’s wrong with this country. Seems a conversation about the royals is long overdue.

And it is absolutely ennervatibg being exposed to it every day. Such relentless sourness. Why not, for oh, a minute or two a day, choose joy? I guess because some people only thrive on hate and resentment. And so love to parade it.

Commenting your view on mumsnet is not ‘parading it’. Literally riding a gold carriage down a London street would be a parade.

TheaBrandt · 07/05/2023 07:12

The vows seemed totally meaningless in this day and age. The whole thing was embarrassing like a tin pot dictatorship with gold coaches and crowns. The rest of the world aren’t admiring - they’re sniggering

Justcallmebebes · 07/05/2023 07:12

Why can't people afford to wash clothes? That's a ridiculous suggestion

TheColourofspring · 07/05/2023 07:12

@GeeHDees i haven’t read all of them tbh so maybe I am wrong on that

I loved the coronation.
The royals are wealthy and they also give back.
Historical systems are from times gone by. Humans, by their own ingenuity, have improved the stardard of living for all in the UK and most countries.
The BRF seem overall kind, generous but as imperfect as any other family.
I am not a fan of communism. We are not all equal - that is not reality. I like the predictable and stable systems of democratic government and the traditions that applaud success, sustainable productivity, culture and creation and fine craftsmanship.

MobilityCat · 07/05/2023 07:14

I loved the pomp and ceremony, but I really don't like Charles.

I watched with interest to begin with, but I'm from a former British colony (who still has Charles as our HoS) an I'm fully aware that the land I live on was invaded in the name of the British Government and Monarchy, and that there is yet to be an apology from the Monarch to the First Nations People, despite First Nations People asking for one a number of times from the late Queen, and now requesting one from the King.

Also, living in a land that is home to the oldest living civilisation on in the world -65,000 to 75,000 years old, (more than 6 times as old as the pyramids) - every time the bbc announcer and priests referred to 'ancient traditions' 'ancient spoons' ' ancient books', I winced. 1066 is a very long time ago, but hardly "ancient.' And not 10s of thousands of years of 'ancient.'

As I wrote elsewhere, the choir boy who spoke to Charles, and Penny Mordaunt who held that heavy sword so long, and so well, were good to watch. As was the Gospel Choir and much of the music -- when the announcers weren't talking over the top of it.

The one good thing about watching the coronation (and it’s why I watch it) is the history.

And it opened up some interesting conversations with my daughter about slavery, religion, the point of royalty, wealth inequality etc etc.

It then reminds me how little we know about the history of our country because we lack regular ceremonies to celebrate or think about it. Why do we only have street parties for the king/queen? And it is because, like it or not, our history has a dark side.

@Dibblydoodahdah i don’t think getting rid of them would harm the economy- has it harmed the French economy? Plenty of countries don’t have royal families or have slimmed down royals- what it would mean is a total shift in the structures of U.K. society and that is a good thing as at the moment the wealth is with the top few percent.

Charles has slimmed down the working royals

TheColourofspring · 07/05/2023 07:15

@Gtsr443 and yes, I get your points about macron- there is plenty about France that isn’t perfect.

But my point is that if you spend time in France, there is a lot about their governance and structure that is more equal. We don’t even have a written constitution in the U.K.

I didn’t see much “joy” there either. In fact the teen royals looked bloody miserable. Camille looked terrified. Harry was hating it. I’ve nothing against them personally (except that twat Andrew ) but it all seemed wrong.

Human beings are equal, but they don’t all have the same amount of money in the bank. But generally speaking the laws of the land apply to us all (except the royals of course).

This isn’t about communism - there are other options.

There's a lot in France that isn't perfect?! Have you seen the chaos in France at the moment?

ThisNameIsNotAvailable · 07/05/2023 07:16

I watched a couple of minutes of it on the news. Just the sight of the fur robes, gold crowns etc and the weird ceremonial aspects were utterly ludicrous. Bizarre in the extreme and that’s without the amount of wealth on display.

I’m ambivalent about the royal family but this was just weird.

Dibblydoodahdah · 07/05/2023 07:17

My 12, almost 13, year old loved it. He was fascinated about the gospels book that originated from the sixth century. He’s a bit of a history nut.

TheaBrandt · 07/05/2023 07:17

Absolutely ThisName that’s exactly how I felt too.

That thread isn't about the OP pulling a sickie. She has the time booked off. It's about taking her kids out of school

TheColourofspring · 07/05/2023 07:18

@NowZeusHasLainWithLeda huh? I have paid for my Glastonbury tickets! What the fuck has that got to do with this? My daughter goes free because she’s 11 and kids don’t pay. My son is working there. Fuck off. And I make no apologies for being a left wing republican either.

The Coronation would have generated more GDP for the country, indirectly helping the poor, and necessitated the employment of thousands of people from low income backgrounds.

TheColourofspring · 07/05/2023 07:19

@GoodChat yea because they stand up for things they don’t like and don’t feel is right. I like that about the French.

Yeah I really don't think France is the best example of a successful republic some people think it is - particularly with Le Pen and the fascists continuing to gain traction.

TheaBrandt · 07/05/2023 07:20

One of mine (16) wandered in for two minutes and said god bloody boring and went off to do school work the other (14) refused to do even that and was disgusted I even watched it.

Dibblydoodahdah · 07/05/2023 07:20

@TheColourofspring equal if you are white! As I said, France is not the defender of equality that you are making it out to be.

Let’s see the numbers on that.

This is my opinion … whinge, whinge, whinge.

I’m finding people’s opinions on every subject under the sun increasingly tedious.
