I had to go put on a jumper

I’m wearing a shirt dress and tights. AIBU to expect better weather in May? It’s been the coldest Spring ever, off the back of a long, freezing Winter.

But it’s just an inconvenience of putting on a jumper?

As a farming family, we are totally reliant on the weather, it’s so wet we haven’t got some sugarbeet drilled yet and the lowland wheat looks sour AF because of weeks of below average temps and rain. It’s not just a financial concern for us as a business but a worry for the reduction in yield and so commodity on the UK market after 2023 harvest. I’d love for my issue to be limited to how many layers I have on, this spring has been relentless for growers.

DappledThings · 06/05/2023 22:55

It's not that unusual. I remember a friend's May Day birthday and being least to find some gloves in my handbag as I walked to the pub. And she had snow the day she was born. And I've been at a June wedding that was 10 degrees and drizzling.

It's been really nice this year having a gentle warm up and not that weird bit of March when it gets roasting for 3 days then off again. Feels like the first time in years we've had seasons progress like they should.

It was 18 here yesterday. Perfect temperature. Would never have it warmer than that if it was up to me.

TheChosenTwo · 06/05/2023 22:58

We had one lovely day here this week, think it may have been Tuesday (south east). Other than that it’s either been very grey and overcast or just pissing it down. Windy too.
We went to the coast this morning and had a good walk along the promenade in the windy rain, came home and lit the fire. The heating is coming on when it drops below 18, it’s been on in various rooms a lot still.
Bit fed up of it now and still feels like a long time until summer holiday.

Really?? Where are you? It’s been consistently 16 degrees here for days, sometimes up to 18… and we are in the north west. Since when did we have hot mays?? We’re in England, not Spain.

The winter was also very mild apart from a few cold spells.

It's as if different parts of the country have different weather.....

TiredandLate · 06/05/2023 23:00

It's bloody cold. I'm sick of it. Quite excited to see 18° tomorrow, but that's still jumper weather!

blacksax · 06/05/2023 23:03

Applesinmyhouse · 06/05/2023 10:00

Its 14 degrees here and raining. I’m freezing.

It's 14 degrees. You are (literally) not freezing.

I'm fed up (Scotland). Cold, damp, miserable. Yes, April and May can be rubbish and inconsistent, but we've barely had a decent couple of hours yet this year, never mind a decent day.

Why do I keep seeing adverts for flimsy dresses, headed "Spring is here!"? Are they trying to rub it in?

You make me feel awful for moaning about the weather when it’s just inconvenient for me yet it’s affecting your livelihood. It really must be a worry for you when it stops you from planting crops or ruins those that are growing.

Most of us can put up with feeling cold but for you farmers, it really is having an impact. Let’s hope we have some dryer and warmer weather soon so you can catch up.

RoseMartha · 07/05/2023 01:54

Weather is really depressing me tbh. Not in summery stuff but have put my winter coat and boots away.

This made me laugh! It's the sort of thing my mum used to say when I was a teenager, along with "you are not starving, children in Africa are starving, you are just hungry".

Its never bloody warmed up round me. The only seasonal progress I’ve seen is a very long winter. I don’t feel like we’ve had spring,

Agreed! 10-12 degrees most days here and I can't remember the last time it didn't rain. Over it!

ghyt · 07/05/2023 08:28

YABU to say we had a freezing winter, barring a very cold week in December it was pretty mild I thought.

But you're not wrong about Spring, it has been shit, and whilst it's finally warming up a bit now it's still bloody cloudy. I hate the weather in this country.

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/05/2023 08:33

Doggymummar · 06/05/2023 11:11

I'm in Brighton and it's freezing 🥶

@tillyandmilly

none of us are wishing the seasons away - quite the opposite, we are wishing for spring! Cos it’s not spring like, it’s been rubbish for most of us - cold windy rainy, just not good enough for May.
and we had a couple of hot days last year - hardly unbearable!!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/05/2023 09:01

It was a cold winter round me. Loads of snow in March.

NEmama · 07/05/2023 09:48

If it was start of June I'd agree.

SunsetsInVenice · 07/05/2023 09:55

London here and although it's been miserable with constant rain, the temperatures are roughly where they should be this time of year.

DuesToTheDirt · 07/05/2023 10:14

Round here, it's not even been particularly cold or wet this winter. No snow on the ground, temperatures so-so, my horse has not been wading through mud in his field. "Spring", though, has consisted of a slight rise in temperature and that's it.

YouveGotAFastCar · 07/05/2023 10:23

Eh, I'd agree with you that it's been a cool Spring, but it was ambitious to wear a shirt dress and tights in May and not think you'd need a jumper, I think.

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/05/2023 10:24

It’s crap having to wear winter clothes in the spring! who wants that?!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 07/05/2023 10:25

The Met Office say that this has been an 'average' spring, we've just been spoiled by the past few years being above average.

I have to wear a jumper if it's under 20 degrees. If it's under 15 I wear a jumper plus a hoodie. I'm a cold arse.

Timeforchangeithink · 07/05/2023 10:26

Kittykatchunjy · 06/05/2023 10:14

How the heck is 18/20 extremely warm in anyone's mind 😕

You obviously don't live in Scotland - heating is still on.

sadsack78 · 07/05/2023 10:27

I'm in South-East Scotland.
Normally May is a beautiful month here- it usually feels like summer is around the corner, even if it isn't hot.

We're having weeks of constant fog, cloud and rain, with weeks more to come according to the forecast.

I'm still wearing thick jumpers and winter socks.

80sMum · 07/05/2023 11:41

Sorry OP, but I think YAB a bit U! May can be very chilly, as indeed can June, July and August! This is the UK! Cool weather is completely normal. What's not normal is hot weather!

Gardening experts have always warned people not to plant out any frost-sensitive plants until June, because of the strong liklihood of frosts in May.

I can recall waking to frost on May mornings many, many times in the past. There have been several May Day bank holidays that have been very cold.
