But this just isn't true. Until very recently, a Catholic could not become king. Someone who married an American divorcee was not acceptable as king. In a constitutional monarchy, it's always possible to reject candidates for the monarch. There is no shortage of potential heirs.

I don’t buy that he or those around him didn’t at least know of the allegations. People had been making complaints for years which were hushed up or dismissed by those in authority. But regardless of whether he did or didn’t ‘know’, why was a celeb allowed to have such influence that he was advising the royals (as per the Guardian article up thread)? God knows what we still don’t know about the torrid dealings of the Royal Family.
